Yes. It is the piston. This is it's function, and the named part that it counts as under 922r analysis.

 

Formerly, the part that would be a piston on a normal AK was not counted, and was considered to be part of the carrier. Now after a moron wrote a redundant letter, they count that part as an "operating rod"
