  1. Yep... this is what I did also. Left pic is with the BHO up (holding bolt back)... Right pic is down (doesn't touch finger anymore) I wouldn't trim anymore than that... or it could possibly get stuck up in the receiver. You can do this... many folks do... just be sure to get an UNmodified/full width hammer with your FCG. The modified hammers are shortened on one side to allow room for the BHO lever... like the stock Saiga hammer. An unmodified hammer... like this Tapco in the pic below... is full width and will takeup the space when you remove the BHO. Here's a good page w
  2. Glad the pictures helped. A picture is worth a thousand words... Easiest option would be to run only Saiga mags with the tall front lip on them. Then you wouldn't need to install a bullet guide at all. But if you want to use mil-spec AK mags (the ones that have the notched front lips)... you need a way to raise the bullet tip up onto the chamber ramp. Thus a bullet guide is required. Cheers!
  3. I put some pictures in this post about bullet guides in the conversion section of this forum. Might help... http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?/topic/72051-converted-but-question-about-flat-bullet-guide/page__view__findpost__p__706718 Cheers!
  4. Followup to my previous post. I got some pictures to help illustrate. Here is what the bullet guide does. It lifts the tip of the bullet so it lands on the ramp and guides its way into the chamber Here is why we need it. Regular AK mag on the left... see the notch? Saiga mag on the right... higher front lip. This higher front lip does the same thing as the bullet guide. Here you can see my bullet guide with regular AK mag (left)... front lip below bullet guide because of notch. And with Saiga mag (right) that just kisses the bullet guide. Here you can see m
  5. Perhaps a tad late to help you... Think about what the bullet guide is trying to do. Put the stock Saiga mag next to a regular AK mag. Look at the front/forward lips on both... side by side. You will see the Saiga mag is higher... whereas the AK mag has a "notch" which makes it lower in the front. Now slide a bullet out of each mag over that front lip. You will see the higher lip of the Saiga mag lifts the bullet tip up higher as it slides over. The regular AK mag doesn't lift the tip. This is because regular AK's have a bullet guide on the gun to lift the bullet tip up to the ramp.
  6. Hi... sorry for your troubles. If you could give us a picture of your trigger/hammer area... we could more easily spot your troubles. Just to be clear... the pictures shown in this thread have the hammer in backwards. ETA: ah... I see you started a new thread... good idea
  7. 1. I did. I bought the Saiga 7.62 sporter rifle and a conversion kit from CSS. The rifle was $350 + shipping + FFL... so ~$400. The conversion kit was $126 + shipping... so I have ~$535 in my converted Saiga. I've seen "preconverted" Saigas sold online (ClassicArms) for $499 + shipping + FFL... so you figure $550. And those conversions come with the basic plain stock (I got the folding kind instead)... but they do weld (?) the trigger guard to the mag release (more original looking)... plus the rest of the usual conversion (trigger group)... including a bullet guide to be able to use sta
  8. Thanks for the pictorial and write-up. Came in handy yesterday when I did my conversion. Like TARE mentioned (deja vu)... the dental floss trick for the BHO spring was a big help... and I too had spinning pins while drilling and had to hold them with pliers. I used a PG nut in the receiver (verses the trigger guard w/ built-in PG nut ) and found when my PG was tightened up, the very rear hole from the relocated trigger plate rivet was exposed. It looks like from your pics it's covered by the PG. So I put another small black screw there into the bottom of my Tapco folding stock... ex
  9. I'm pretty sure the answer is yes. I just converted my Saiga yesterday also using the CSS kit. Without the BHO lever, the hammer would be able to slide on the pin. Would it? Seeing how the rest of the trigger is pretty fixed side-to-side and would keep the hammer aligned... I'm guessing no. But I think a washer in place of the BHO is a safe bet. I left my BHO in... and didn't like how far down the lever stuck into the trigger finger area. Like others, I pushed the lever all the way up, traced it with a pencil against the receiver and trimmed the BHO lever with a dremel. MUCH
  10. Dimpled... 09 serial.... March 2011 acceptance paperwork (old stock recently imported?)... flat trunnion... no barrel step... PG hole... lovely Legion coverup... sweetness.
  11. Flat - Mar 2011 acceptance stamp; 09 serial (old stock recently shipped/imported?); dimpled; no chamber step
  12. Hi Gang.... another new guy here too. Guess I could start my own thread, but "Joined the Saiga family" seemed like a good one to say "Hi" in too. Just picked up my first Saiga... a 7.62x39 Sporter rifle. '09 build... TGI importer... dimpled... flat trunnion... sweet rifle! I already have my CSS conversion kit on hand and will be "restoring" (haha) soon. I want to shoot it at the range in it's current form first. Tore it all apart last night to explore, learn, and clean it. Any excuse to take something apart! Thanks for the cool forum with tons of great info! Ch
  13. Yeah... same boat here. Just picked up my first Saiga yesterday ('09 build). I was thrilled it had all the cool Russian markings and even dimples (hit or miss it seems) and a flat trunnion for the bullet guide... but... That large knurled rectangle covering the old importer stamp... is pretty unsightly. I at first thought it was a piece of velcro (the snaggy hook side). But alas... it's more permanent. Would love to hear others experience smoothing it out.
