  1. The stock long barrel is 22" (actually 21.8" inches, but close enough). I'd like to go 20" or even 18" to optimize for overall length while not subjecting myself to the muzzle blast of the 16" barrel. I think the M1A barrel is 18.5" so I know that length works. Maybe someday I'll get my poop in a group and give it a go, until then I'm pretty happy with what I've got now.
  2. I finally converted mine... Parts list: Dinzag modified Tapco G2 trigger group K-Var NATO length buttstock Hogue pistol grip RAM trigger guard SGM Tactical front handguard Texas Weapon Systems scope rail Blackhawk cheek pad Sightron S1 scope Jetbeam RRT-2 Q3 Warm tint flashlight w/ remote switch on an offset mount I had to drill both holes for the trigger guard and do a little fitting to buttstock tang, but all in all it only took a couple of hours. I'd like to shorten the barrel to 20" and add a compensator, but I haven't gotten that brave yet.
  3. I (finally) did the conversion on my .308 yesterday and I had similar problems with the Ram STD trigger guard. I found that the front hole didn't line up and there wasn't a hole at the rear at all, but the location for it fell exactly between the two spot welds. I guess some of the other versions of the Saiga have a rear rivet instead of the spot welds on the .308 and the TG is supposed to use the front and rear rivet holes on those. At the front the blind nut in the TG lined up just far enough away from the rivet hole that there was room to drill a new one (instead of having to 'slot out'
  4. There's another decent ammo deal over at Sportsmans Guide on Ultramax reloads. I got 100 rounds of 165gr Speer BTSP for $90.46 shipped (using a $5 off coupon from RetailMeNot. Definitely not as cheap as FMJ but its the best price I've seen for 165gr in a long time (I can't even get 165 locally, only 150 and 180). From the reviews I've read on Ultramax reloads it seems to be decent stuff and they have quite a selection of bullets types...
  5. The bottom edge of the follower contacting the spring is a distinct possibility that I hadn't though of. Maybe it was turning the spring around - not removing the coils - that fixed the problem. I know the legs were short enough because they actually ended up about 1/8" shorter than the 'skirt' on the follower. When you put the two together (without the spring) the 'skirt' on the follower would sit on the sub-plate but the legs were still about 1/8" from touching the bottom side of the top of the follower - if you follow me I'll have to try it again later on another mag! BTW,
  6. I just finished muddling my way through this mod last night. I finally got it work reliably (not bind up after loading 6-8 rounds) by smoothing all the edges with a file as described by macbeau. I also had to remove 2 coils of spring to get enough extra 'space' in the mag so the bolt would cycle smoothly when the mag is full (10 rounds). Apparently the feeding lug on the bolt pushes the top round down about half the width of a round when it cycles to the rear. Until I removed the coils it didn't have that much travel left in the mag and the bolt would drag very heavily on the top round.
  7. Looking at the power class and adventure class lineup of those centerpoint scopes, I get the feeling that I've seen these guys before in the accushot and 5th Generation series lineups, respectively, from Leapers. They appear to be priced comparably as well. Coincidence? Maybe, but they are all made in China - and you know how the Chinese feel about copying (or simply relabeling the same stuff)... That being said I have a Leapers 3-9x40 Illuminated on my S308 and have no complaints. I mainly shoot my Saiga for fun and use it as a backup hunting rifle, so the < $100 scope is perfectl
  8. I've heard that a Limbsaver large slip-on will fit good, but I'm using a Pachmayr decelerator medium that I got at Wal-Mart and it fits nice and tight. Because of the shape of the buttplate the rubber skirt part does bulge a little bit width-wise at the top and bottom (and the brown pad on the black stock looks kinda ghetto) but it stays put and adds about 3/4" overall to the stock. I haven't tried the large in either the Pachmayr or Limbsaver so I can't comment on how those would fit. When I measured the buttplate on mine I got 5 1/4" L x 1 1/2" W - a little more length than what they reco
  9. True, its really not bad here yet. But things are being put in place that could very quickly make things very bad here. Check out the text HR 1955 - The Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007 for an idea of how they are trying to invent a reason/way to police the internet and get people to turn each other in. Or check out this article on the 'slight' modification to the Defense Authorization Bill in 2006 that no longer requires the president respect either the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 or the Insurrection Act of 1807. Also there's the numerous executive ord
  10. And that's where the 'private' militaries come in. Blackwater and other mercenary 'companies' - just like Hitler's SS blackshirts. Corporate armies with no real loyalties other than to themselves with access to military hardware is very worrisome. Wouldn't it be unfortunate if one of these companies 'just happened to go rouge' and started terrorizing citizens. Of course the government would officially condemn it - kinda like they 'officially' condemned the Iran contras back in the 80's (while supplying them behind everyone's back). You really don't have to defeat the population, just make
  11. Haven't done this myself, but I've read in another post that you can use the LARGE size Limbsaver slip-on recoil pad to extend the stock about an inch or so. I've been looking for something a little less pricey but its not a big priority for me right now as the I don't find the shorter length all that uncomfortable (could be I just have shorter arms or something though...)
  12. I just removed the screws from the sporter stock and saved them. I was able to remove my sporter stock just by firmly holding the receiver and working the stock side-to-side a little bit while pulling. Then I fitted the Saiganov stock into the receiver and made sure it was seated well by bumping it firmly against the floor. At that point it didn't move even without the screws. I eyeballed it all around to make sure it was straight (that the small gaps where the receiver meets the main body of the stock were even on both sides and that the upper tang was centered in the groove). I then too
  13. I got mine from MidwayUSA, on the same page linked by BullShark. Even then the image was unavailable but I can assure you that it IS the same item pictured in my previous post...
  14. The Leapers 5th Gen retains zero for me, but I've only had it on and off < 10 times. I only remove it when I need to get down into the FCG area for cleaning or whatever. I suppose it might loosen up over many off-on cycles (since its made of aluminum clamping on steel) but you can tighten it up with the screw on the bottom if needed. I've been happy with it so far (over the past 4 months or so).
  15. Have you looked at the Leapers 5th Gen. Quick Detachable Double Rail AK Side Mount? Its available from Midway USA for a reasonable price. I have it on my .308 and it puts the scope dead center of the bore and about 1/4" ~ 3/16" above the dust cover. Its the same thing that has been mentioned in earlier posts with the 3 allen head screws, but in a quick detach format. Definitely blocks the irons but I can still field strip with it attached if I'm careful and patient. Low enough that I had to get medium rings to mount my 40mm scope. Very solid and a bit heavy but it sounds like it might be
