BODYARMOR' Blog - Body Armor for HUNTERS

http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?automodule=blog&blogid=2&showentry=5

As I have mentioned in the previous post, I will make some suggestions about different options available for hunters.

Most of the body armor manufacturers do not offer a ready solution. They manufacture "UNDERCOVER JACKETS". This product features regular jacket with ballistic lining. It can be easily transferred to your existing hunting jacket. One company that offers such jacket is Second Chance and another is Point Blank with Marksman & Street-Jac. They manufacture good quality products. This armor layers loose against your body and will not restrict you movement. Good price for such jacket is around $700.00 for Size XL.

I recommend this type of armor since most of the people not associated with Law Enforcement will not feel comfortable with most of the models of Undergarment Concealable armor.

The only reason why I did not discuss Deer Hunters is because there is no Soft Body Armor that is capable to withstand a rifle round. It is too fast and it has pointed tip. Soft body armor is designed to defeat threats from handguns and shotguns. In order to defeat rifle round, heavy rigid armor has to be involved. Just be very careful when you hunt with your rifle. Remember, safety comes first.

In the next section I will describe definitions of different protection levels for Body Armor and different ammunitions that armor defeats.

BODYARMOR' Blog - What is BODY ARMOR?

http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?automodule=blog&blogid=2&showentry=3

Body Armor is a protective garment that is worn under or over clothing in order to protect a person from anticipated ballistic threats.

Modern body armor comes in many varieties and it can be confusing for an average person to decide on what kind is needed.

I would like to take this opportunity and use this BLOG to educate you about armor in general, so when the need comes, you know what you need!

All body armor can be subdivided into 2 major categories based on use:

1. Concealable Armor
2. Tactical Armor

For most of the LAW ENFORCEMENT and CIVIL use we will pay attention only to CONCEALABLE armor.
The name is self-explanatory, however, we can subdivide it into UNDERGARMENT and OVERGARMENT armor.

When I was involved into designing and manufacturing body armor, I was advocating it for civil use. Many Law Enforcement officials disagreed with me. This is due to a law that states: Any crime committed while wearing Body Armor is classified as a felony! Though every year there is about 100 hunting accidents (10 fatal & 90 non-fatal) that involves turkey hunters. If body armor was worn, the injuries suffered due to those accidents could be drastically reduced. Lack of knowledge about body armor prevents people from using it as standard safety wear. Lets start with that!

HOW EFFECTIVE IS BODY ARMOR AGAINST SIMPLE LEAD SHOT?

It is very effective even in low protection Level IIA. It is reasonable to say that hunters wear camouflaged jackets. Therefore, Body Armor can be made as Light Over-Garment Jacket with protection Level IIA without any discomfort.

Why it is so effective?

Practically, most of the turkey hunters use shotguns such as SAIGA-12. The ammunition of preference is Lead Shot 6 to 9. Each shell contains small pellets. The diameter of each pellet is considerably smaller then a diameter of a bullet. As well as muzzle velocity is 400 to 600 FPS, a lot lower then even .22 round 800 to 1200 FPS. Therefore, Level IIA Armor is capable of withstanding multiple blasts with such ammo!

PLEASE, EXERCISE SAFETY AND EXTREME CAUTION WHEN HANDLING ANY WEAPON!!!

Many companies offer such armor for reasonable price. So, when you hunt, you can be protected from unnecessary injuries in case of an accident!

In my future posts I will discuss specific models of armor from different manufacturers and what is better for you.
