Not a problem. I have one on my 5.45 from Krebs wihch works great. But I really need one for my .308 and cant find a good fit. Krebs has one that is split on a bottom with 2 screws. I could ream that out to fit the .308 barrel but I do not think those screws will hold well....

Should be in shortly.

I am content at the moment..... Posted Image

I also finally order Dinzags Bullet-Guide as well.... Reliability 1st.

That's schweet! :super:

How did you secure the 550 cord to the stock? I want to do something similar to quiet the forward clip on my three-point sling.

Kevin..

Thanks for the compliment.

Just started with the 'hidden loop' at the rear of the top rail and came across the top rail, jumped to the bottom rail at the front and then back to the rear. Its all one giant piece (no breaks) in-case I need to jump off a cliff or a wall.

The 550 cord has been RIT dyed BROWN (came out a hair Dark-Red/Brown, but is Russian..lol). Just kept pulling it tight as I could with EVERY turn/wrap. Also acts a GRIP surface.

Stock will be taking a 'sabaticle' as soon as I get the new DE stock and forearm in from CSS this coming week.
(I had a small smudge where the tape let the gray paint in onto the stock (I mean MINUTE as heck but I am anal, so now I'm spending $100 on a different setup).. Man this Saiga thing causes issues with the wallet.....Posted Image

No worries though, not un-wrapping it. Going to 'clense' the paint off the stock carefully and keep in closet.

Will be posting pics next week with the new setup and such. Shame this is only a week old. Posted Image

Hey hopping1, is the LHCH you're using an AK Lightning Bolt or a different product? :unsure:

Also, I like how you modded the BHO. You actually made it into a desirable feature on your x39, (OEM BHO is great on the S-12, but on the x39 it's pretty useless imo).

No I cut the charging handle and had my friend mig weld it on. It was easier than I thought it would be. And +1 on the BHO. I didn't see the point of it until I fixed it.

Finally went retro with my Saiga. Got my $25, four piece Bulgarian AK74 wood from APEX (awesome) and brown US grip from a dude on another board. The wood really didn't even need refinishing. It is excellent +, but I re-finished to get it redder. All 10 of my Mil-surp combloc mags have new -KVar US followers installed, so with the US brown grip, my 922 is in order.

I love wood on AKs. I was so indoctrinated to AK103ism with the Saiga, though, I didn't think of a very simple solution until I was refinishing the Springfield Armory potbelly stock for my M1 Carbine. "Duh, just put wood on the Saiga!" Then I found the Bulgarian wood with the grooved stock and palm swell handguard and I was hooked!

I used red oak Minwax to darken the blond Bulgarian wood a bit. The wood was so dense that I used semigloss Minwax verathane instead of boiled linseed oil to seal it. Very sweet: Pictured with my modified Type 81 four cell Chinese chest rig.

They are not making them any more. They are simply selling the remaining parts left from a project? At least thats what I got from their rep. Once they sell their current inventory thats the end of them.
As far as wall thickness you are correct. I can tell you for sure that you do not have enough.

Thought I was done, but guess not! Man, these things are just plain fun! And cost effective too! I think the only items I want to change now is the sighting system and to put some type of flash suppressor on it. Really having a hard time between the TWS with the peep sight and the Tech Sight. As for the flash suppressor, I have the clip on Phantom, but I took it off as I am concerned that if could come off and/or damage the barrel. Thought I would be safe with a Flash suppressor vs a compensator (pressure wise). Just installed the Red Star trigger group, and really like it. I will say that I am having to chop the shit out of the notch of the safety lever to be able to adjust the trigger travel. Rifle was completely stripped down to the metal, degrease, degrease, and degrease some more, and painted with Aluma-HydeII and baked in the over for 2 hours at 185 (same with all of the painted parts). Take care and Semper Fi!

Very cool pics, 305diver! What's that prize of yours in your avatar? A grouper?

These pics are just further recent evidence of how well the 7.62x39 can hunt. I wouldn't want to take on a 267lb wild boar with a 5.56x45. Sure, he'd most likely die of the wounds the 5.56 inflicted, (so long as you could shoot worth a damn), but perhaps not until after he fucked you up pretty severely. :horror:

.30 cal stops things in their tracks. .223... not so much.

Your bro looks mighty pleased with himself, as well he should be. Those are some nice kills. Nice SGL10 as well. I hadn't seen one with a SAW grip and wire folder before. Also, cool swamp tractor! :D

Hey guys! I'm new here on the Saiga-12 Forum.

I was recently bitten by the Saiga bug a few months ago. I really dig these rifles. And, converting them is great fun!

Here's my first Saiga conversion project!

Specs:
* Saiga rifle, imported by Russian American Armory
* 7.62 x 39mm caliber
* 415 mm (16.3") barrel, 4 grooves, 1 in 240 mm (9.44") twist rate (NOTE: barrel "cryo-ed" at CryoPro)
* Bolt carrier hand polished with Dremel tool and Cratex polishing cones/wheels
* Tapco Intrafuse hand guard, modified to accept sling stud for bi-pod mounting, and ladder-style rail covers installed
* ACE external receiver block, with single-point sling mount
* ACE Original Skeleton Stock, custom-cut to 8" and 1" buttpad installed
* Hogue AK-47 (USA-made) pistol grip
* Standard AK-47 front front sight
* Krebs Custom rear peep sight
* Tapco G2 single hook trigger, ALL contact surfaces polished to an almost-mirror finish, and modified to retain the bolt hold open function.
* Dinzag bullet guide installed
* Bolt hold open shortened approx. 1/4" (i.e. it's almost flush with the receiver when it's in use, and it's out of the way when not in use)
* UTG folding forward grip
* 20-round Hungarian surplus magazine, with Tapco follower.

imarangemaster,

Thanks for your kind words. Being that this was my first Saiga conversion project, the positive feedback is very much welcomed!

I like the UTG forward grip on the Tapco Intrafuse hand guard. In fact, I continue to have better-than-expected results with the UTG/Leapers brand.

You see, I have more expensive forward grips on my other rifles, and while I like them a lot, this one is very nice for the money. It's secure, it's comfortable, it folds, and it has a storage compartment too.

BTW, I've positioned the forward grip so I can still fold it while the 20-rounder is in the magazine well. I haven't tried a 30-rounder yet, but in a pinch, you can always fold it forwards, instead of rearward.

Thanks again for the positive comments.

Lastly, I've got some other "projects" upcoming. And, I'll be sure to post pics, once they're done. ;^)

Alaj60,
The fact that it was a folding grip is what attracted me. I had a CAA stubby foregrip on my 223 Saiga when I had it, and I still had to place it father forward than I like to allow mag change, even with the lesser curve of the Orlite Galil mags.

There is nothing wrong with using 20 rounders instead of 30s. My favorite magazine is the factory 10 rounder I modified to 15 by trimming US K-Var follower, spring, and base plate post. It is handier and lighter (about 1/3 of a 30 rounder).That is what I kept in the weapon when I used it as a house/farm rifle before I switched to the 30 carbine for my trashed shoulder. I kept a loaded 30 on the shelf next to it to grab and put in my back pocket.

UTG/Leapers stuff gets a bad rap. At first there stuff was crap. I used there ARMS type flip up rear sight when I had an M4gery - before I saw the light took the AK rules oath! IT WAS A GREAT SIGHT. I also used some of their other AR stuff and found it a good buy for the buck. The AR/M4gery snob children would rather pay 4 as much for a "COOL" name!

Anyway, great job, especially for a first effort!

Here is my Saiga 7.62x39. (Unfinished.)

I've got the following:
Tapco Buttstock
Ergo Grip
UTG Quad Rail (Yes, I know.. I know. But hey, it was the cheapest aluminum forearm option.)

Possible add-ons:
Some ladder rail guards.
A light and or laser.
MORE MAGS!

She isn't as purdy as some of the wood clothed Saigas on here, but she has proven herself.

I've got the following:
Tapco Buttstock
Ergo Grip
UTG Quad Rail (Yes, I know.. I know. But hey, it was the cheapest aluminum forearm option.)

Possible add-ons:
Some ladder rail guards.
A light and or laser.
MORE MAGS!

She isn't as purdy as some of the wood clothed Saigas on here, but she has proven herself.

beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, It's the same for women,for example, some love the redheads others not such big fans, don't mean the redhead ain't hot shit. I love all women thou but thats another story for another time and place.

Alaj70,
The fact that it was a folding grip is what attracted me.

Anyway, great job, especially for a first effort!

imarangemaster,

Thanks again for your kind compliments and warm welcome.

I can't wait to post pics of my next Saiga project. You see, I've got a few more in the hopper...some different calibers too!

More to come...

Cheers,

alaj70

Looks like its directly built into the reciever ... very nice!
