I thought I would add this one too... Its not a Saiga... its my WASR10... but its been dressed up a little bit... I just swapped out lower handguards a few minutes ago... I didnt think that the lower would match up with the upper, but I took some of my wood refinishing oil out, and some steel wool, and buffed it up a little bit... I think it matches the upper handguard pretty well after all, and if I bothered to take the time to strip the thumbhole, and rework that, I think I could get the whole set to look pretty sweet!
I also like the tantal style brake... Its sort of a hodgepodge rifle, but then again... all my rifles tend to be... but hey... they are CUSTOM... and mine... and I like em that way!!

Here mine, got it used for $175 off a friend who only fired 20 rounds through it. Today I got all these accessories, I hadn't realized how many things were available for these. I know the 30 round mags weren't around last year.

Jeez, you went all out on that! You even got a receiver with dimples!

That looks like one the modern AK-1xx series. Nice job!

Thanks guys. The dimples and X-Y stamps on the Saiga were my inspiration. I knew this one had to be special so I decided to go all out and build it up as an AK-103.

-Global Trades 24mm Muzzle Brake
-Bulgarian AK-74 FSB, GB, Lower HG Retainer and Gas Tube. The Saiga 7.62x39 barrel has the same dimensions as a Bulgy AK-74 apparently.
-Used a "keyhole cutter" to mill out grooves in the side of the barrel for the lower handguard retainer.
-US black handguards and pistol grip.
-Russian late model 1000m rear sight leaf.
-Arsenal USA Match Gas Piston
-Bulgarian riveted bullet guide. The one from K-VAR is for milled guns so some cutting was required. Had to mill out a groove in the floor of the rear trunnion to make this fit.
-When I pulled the barrel to fit the bullet guide I had to replace the "3rd rivet".
-Installed a Bulgarian AK-74 trigger guard but used the original Saiga release tab so it would look factory. Also filed side of base to match profile of the factory selector stop.
-Arsenal USA trigger and disconnector, saved the Saiga hammer because of the peculiar fit of the bolt locking device.
-Spot welded a pistol grip reinforcing plate on.
-Russian AK-100 series sidefolder. It's really silly that these Russian ones can be had for less than the US-made ones K-VAR is selling.

My only regret is not having the welding skills to cover the old holes in the receiver. Maybe I'll take a class. :)

Great work man. Just get some of those nylon hole plugs from Lowes or the hardware store. They pop right in and look just like rivets. Damn I wonder how many timers I've said that...

cool and I dont know but really looks good with the hand guard and
gas tube guard too, I mean it really looks good on the Saiga.

Thanks! I wanted it to look like a classic Russian AK, and to me the thumbholes look more "traditional/unique." I know that many of the other countries have started doing thumbhole stocks (Maadi=Egyption, SLR-95=Bulgarian, SA-85=Hungarian, NHM-90=Chinese, Romak=Romanian, etc.) but each has their own unique design and usually the lineage can be identified by the type of thumbhole stock. The PG+Stock is so much more common, I feel it doesn't say as much about the gun, but that may just be because I can't tell the difference between a SAR 1 and an AKM-47. That's not meant to insult anyone else's PG+Stock conversion, I still think they're gorgeous, I just wanted something that is more distinguishable to the common collector. A true AK connoseur probably could tell the difference, I just don't know how.

I wish I could have found a true Russian wood thumbhole, but I believe only Dragunovs and the Vepr use thumbholes. Both are more expensive (if even available) and neither would fit the Saiga receiver without modifications. So I went with the top of the line Hungarian to try to keep the haughty personality a Russian AK deserves. If my gun's mistaken for a SA-85, I won't be offended, but if someone really takes the time to notice they'll realize it's a hybrid of two of the nicest AKs made. :smoke: But there's no mistaking it for anything but top of the line.

I hate to be "that guy" but is that 922 compliant? Pretty gun, no doubt, but I think with a foreign magazine (unless you replaced the trigger group and piston) you're not compliant. You may want to double check just to be sure you don't get in trouble.
