I just got into the Saiga 12 game and I am about to order buck shot in bulk (250 rds). What do you recommend as far as the most effective defensive rounds and reliable in the Saiga 12?

I've shot nobel 4 buck, Winchester 3" 1 buck, remington 3" 4 buck, & wolf 00 buck.

If it fits in your mag it should run just fine. :killer:

I like the nobel 4 buck for the price. I like 1 buck for the large number of pellets yet still a .30" diameter, but it seems Winchester is the only manufacturer of 1 buck anymore, and their crimps leak the suspension media which potentially could bind up a follower in a mag.

As far as Quality goes I like Remington and I've heard good things about federal.

I have only played around with Remington & Federal 3" magnum.

From my observations, Remington buck comes out in a plastic retaining thing & takes a while to break free of it, therefore it has closer groupings of the pellets at distances. (also that plastic penetrates a little too, (ouch))

Federal spreads more. I don't know if it has the plastic because I have never dissected the 2, but I never find plastic in the backstop with Federal like I do the Remington.

I would say (between the 2) Remington for distance, Federal for scatter.

Wally world usually has 15 rds of the Rem 3" magnum for about $12.00 though. That is as cheap as I have seen buck outside of bulk.

Maybe I will take a couple apart now that I have my curiosity up  & if I can find my camera's download cable I will post a comparison of what I find.

Edit: Both cycle equally well in my russian 5rd mag...
If You havn't read my other posts yet, I am having difficulty finding a dependable American mag. (Surefire seems to be the popular consensus for reliability)

Whatever you do, DO NOT WASTE YOUR $$$ ON PRO-MAG!!!!! (unless you want a dummy mag)

The buck shot I have had the best results from has been federal premium Tactical LE with flite control wad. It produces the tightest patterns I have ever seen. Its not the cheapest buck shot you will find but it is money well spent.

I've only shot Win 3" 000 mag. and I'm happy with it. It does scatter a bit but it packs a wallop. I want to try some Wolf 00 rounds.

Welcome to the forum!

These guys are giving you some good info.

REMEMBER

If you plan on getting the MD 20 drum,
only certain brands will fit.

For example,
Rio and Wolf will not fit the drum
Remmington will

Here is a thread that can help a little.

I use the Winchester Super X rounds in the Wal Mart value pack. 15 rounds for around $10. Used both the 2 3/4 and the 3 inch and they both work fine for me. The magnum packs a hell of a wallop though...

I'm not a fan of the flight control, though it's an excellent round. I don't like the fact that it stays in the cup the entire time. I'd prefer my shot to spread. That's just me though. I mostly get flight control to shoot though as that's what's provided. I preferred the remmy 3" 00 magnums that we used to get (better spread). I like the feeling that i'm shouldering a howitzer and belching death at whatever's in front of me. Different strokes for different folks though, and as applications vary so will your ammo.

Federal LE flight controlled wad is,by far,the tightest patterning buckshot I have ever seen.I ran several different loads through my 8" Tromix S17 and is was incredible how much tighter of a pattern the Federal flight controlled was compared to everything else(remington, wolf, fiocchi, hornady and Federal LE reduced recoil). At 20 yards most of the shots were around 16 inches of spread. The Federal Flight controlled was less than 9 inches.

I found Remington #1 Buck and bought 250 rounds. I'm going to buy some Federal "Flite Control" 00 Buck for serious use. I understand it has the tightest pattern, even at extended range. Since my S-12 has an Improved Cylinder bore, I want something that will more or less compensate for the greater pattern spread, and I think the Flite Control will do that. Of course I'll take some of all of it out and try it at different ranges to see how they all perform from MY gun. That's probably not a bad idea for most of us here.

Absent results to the contrary, I plan on keeping #1 Buck in one mag fpr close range, Flite control 00 Buck in another for longer range, and slugs for, well, just in case, with a second backup mag filled with each of the above. I am a big believer in having backup mags for everything I shoot, in each loading, including my rifles and pistols.
