I posted this also at another website. Hoping to catch more ideas or comments......

Ok this is a question for all you ammo guru's. The 5.45 normal black box (poly performance) is 60 grain and hits 2936 FPS and the new milspec classic is 70 grain going at 2460 FPS. Ok lemme have the lowdown, heavier will give you more knockdown?, but I thought the lighter will pent and tumble better. You can see the diff between the two rounds. The 70 has more "meat" in the middle where as the 60grain is the "needle like" round. By all means let the banter begin.
So which would be best to "save", the laq sealed heavier or the thinner FASTER round. If one was going to be unavailable anymore which should i shoot off?

Save the 70s. They should retain more velocity to longer distances, and perform the same assuming they are constructed with that famous "hollow nose". The 70 grain bullet should have better sectional density and, thus, a higher ballistic coefficient. People who worry about that kind of thing tend to be accuracy obsessed competitors or wannabees (me included).

As was mentioned in your post, bullet construction could have a major impact on your decision. I've heard glowing reports of the 60 grain load on coyotes. If it's constructed the same as the 60, then it's really about how far you plan on shooting - plus 100 yards. wink.gif

I am pretty sure that the 53 grain load was outperformed (by a landslide) when compared against the 5.56 NATO and that "new" 6.8mm Chinese cartridge. If the 70 grain bullet does have a more "solid" construction, then the penetration could be better than the lighter weight bullets.

Out of my SAR 2, the 60 grain load produced very pretty star shaped five shot groups, measuring two inches across, at one hundred yards (from a rest). I haven't had a chance to really test the 53 grain load, but I expect it to perform similarly.

In the end, that's what it comes down to for me: "Only hits count." ... assuming you're ignoring the possibility of needing to perfom "cover-fire" or having an underpowered gun. That doesn't seem likely with this group though. wink.gif
