1,000 guns taken off streets this year

Milwaukee police reported today that the department has seized more than 1,000 guns in the city so far in 2007 as Chief Nannette Hegerty and other law enforcement leaders plan to gather this afternoon to discuss a shared effort to target those who commit gun crimes.

Hegerty, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, U.S. Attorney Steve Biskupic, U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Resident Agent in Charge Art Chavarria, Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm and Milwaukee Deputy Police Chief Brian O'Keefe will speak with reporters today about their work together against gun crimes.

In addition to the city's seizures, the ATF reports several hundred more guns taken off the streets while the district attorney's office and the U.S. Attorney's Office report they are handling more cases than ever that involve gun possessions.

could it be they are actually enforcing laws and it is making news...not simply trying to pass new laws to show some effort?

amazing concept!

Very cool,
However, I'm far to jaded to think they will stop trying to pass Nazi gun laws.......
Will
I am afraid this will only embolden the antigun crowd to try and push even more gun laws.

Being a former Milwaukee resident for 27 years(In Racine now), I can see the validation of the city's claim.

However, it comes with cynicism. These gun seizures also come from the so-called "Gun Buy-Back" Program, which, in unto itself, was a decent program which its heart in the right place(give $160 for every gun brought in), but, in my view, all it did was give money back to people to buy newer guns.

One of the revolvers square in the middle of one picture was worth an easy $550, as my Father pointed out.

is that buy back program still going on?

i was most impressed with the statement that they are going after the gun crimes, not the guns themselves.......we will just have to see if that stays true....

When our current govenor was mayor of baltimore he had a "pay theives to steal your gun/disposal service for murder weapons". He would pay $50 for all and any guns. No questions asked, no serial numbers checked-all destroyed.
So he was effectively buying stolen property and making no attempt to find the real owners, and destroying evidence of capitol crimes.

Damn I can't wait to get out of this lunatic asylum!

Yeah, but in a city where just owning a gun can make you a virtual criminal (just try using one in self-defense in Milwaukee), they can come and take your guns anyway, citing them as 'illegal'(take all of your gun show-bought guns, for example. They're unregistered, so technically speaking, they are illegal) and therefore pad their stats by adding them to the claim cleaning up the city.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom "I'm a No-Show" Barrett is trying to introduce legislation closing the so-called "gun-show loophole" and making sub-21 year olds criminals if they own a handgun (Wasn't that law already in effect?).

http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=603811

Studies have shown it to be a fact that most of these crimes are committed by repeat-offenders who were, surprise, surprise, released from jail on either Bond or early release.

Wouldn't it be a better idea to, maybe, keep these assholes in jail in stead of continuing to punish the innocent gun owners for sticking to their God-given rights? Of course it would. But that makes sense, and if it's one thing that Wisconsin politicians have proven time and again, it's that if something makes sense, then it's the wrong course of action.

Of course it would make sense. It would keep the criminals behind bars and guns in the hands of the law-abiding. But the bureaucrats fear the people who own guns, so they will stamp us out of the picture in any way possible.
Our Governor, Jim Doyle, is the poster-child of this sentiment.

I can't believe the people of this State voted that filthy troll back in. To that end, I hope they get to learn their folly.
