Upon searching for a forum thread to stick this post within.... I was slightly dumbstruck to find that there exists no "sticky thread" to share what knives we all carry on us daily (i.e., our every-day-carry... or EDC knives). Perhaps I simply missed the sticky-thread during my search.... So if a forum Moderator would relocate this post to the appropriate thread, I would be most appreciative.
I own three Grant & Gavin Hawk (a father and son team from Idaho) custom folding knives, one of which is my EDC. Recently, I had the distinct pleasure of coordinating directly with Gavin Hawk (the son) to learn whether he would entertain a modification of one of his knives which I had purchased several months ago; one of his MUDD folders; my EDC. Specifically, due to my rather smallish hands and stubby fingers (thumb in this case), I was hoping he would be willing to fabricate new thumb-studs for the knife. It was my belief if the thumb-studs were twice as tall, it would be much easier for me to open the knife quickly. Gratefully, I found Gavin more than willing to do so (for a small, nominal fee) and he further inquired with me at rather great length, all the things I liked and disliked about the three G&G Hawk model knives that I own? It was a great pleasure to encounter someone, a custom knife maker, that was so willing to learn what one of his customer's thoughts and perceptions were, regarding his products.
Anyway, below are a few photos of my meager G&G Hawk knife collection. The first two photos are of my recently modified MUDD folder (as mentioned above), and the last photo contained in the next post, is of my RAM II flipper and a T.O.A.D. folder, both with damascus blades (with my Sinn 856 watch). The G&G Hawk damascus T.O.A.D. folder is the absolutely last one made and sold by the Hawk team, and I was hugely fortunate in being able to secure it. It is without question... my "Holy Grail" of knives.

I have chosen to be rather boring about the knife carry issue. I have and always will carry a leatherman. I currently carry my leatherman "crunch" 95% of the time and the orginal leatherman the rest of the time. Should be an interesting thread seeing the numerous knives friends of mine carry. The Saiga group must have some very unique knives on them.

You know.... I'd have to totally agree. One would think that it would be hugely diverse and interesting to see all the different sorts of blades Saiga-12.com members use as their every day carries.
By the way, here are two more photos... of the custom leather pancake belt sheath I had made by Lifter's Leather, to appropriately carry my EDC within. After all.... wearing the knife on my belt in a rig like this is a lot more comfortable IMHO than having the knife's pocket clip banging around or scratching on things (such as the paint finish on an automobile...

I have a very simple skeletonized Winchester with a 50% serrated blade that I bought at Walmart. No assisted opening -- just many hours of sitting in front of the TV breaking it it. I recently picked up a Smith & Wesson HRT fixed blade, too. It comes with a sheath that can belt mounted, on a neck lanyard of carried IWB.
The problem I am having is trying to decipher Virginia's terrible concealed carry laws. We have great handgun laws - but our knife laws suck! There are no concealed "weapon" permits - only concealed handgun. The law prohibits carrying "any dirk, bowie knife, switchblade knife, ballistic knife, machete, razor...or weapon of like kind" It's that last part that's the killer! There's no hard and fast definition -- basically it's up to the police on the scene to decide, the Commonwealth's Attorney to decide to prosecute and the judge to decide if the knife qualifies as "like kind". The only source of info is case law and appeals - and that's sketchy. For example, one appeals court ruled that a box cutter did not qualify as a "razor" adn wasn't designed as a "weapon", even though it can be used as one. On the other hand, a butterfly knife was a "weapon" because it had a hilt to prevent you from cutting yourself when you used it. In one case, the appeals court literally said that a 12" butcher knife wasn't a "weapon", even though the guy arrested with it had it under his coat and used it to threaten the manager of a shoe store while he was trying to steal two pairs of shoes! So there's no clarity in Virginia about what's legal (although common belief seems to be that the clip from a pocket knife showing is enough to make it "un-concealed" -- far from legal justification, though.)
So before I sink a lot of money into a quality knife, I want to be sure I'm not going to find myself up on charges during some routine situation!

Similiar laws in Texas. My belief is that if you have a Concealed Carry License and behave yourself you should not have a problem. Officers I have spoken to felt the same way. Why worry about an automatic knife if the guy has a .45 on him? I will agree that not all officers may have that view and that is where behaving yourself and not being searched is a good idea. I don't worry about it and haven't for years. It is a personal decision that you must be comfortable with. Probably no help at all, sorry.

Gary:
$140.00 for a knife to carry wasn't cheap to me. You, however, did not ask about my G.W. Stone custom knife fighting collection which includes a Parker, Stone Model A, Bowie & Arkansas Toothpick all with my last name and custom serial numbered, all with Sambar Stag handles, and all built for my hand. You don't want to know about price and I can't believe I paid that over thirty years ago. I still enjoy fondling them though. You won't regret paying for qualilty once as opposed to continuously paying for the lack of quality. Of course that excludes those who work with their knives by prying, cutting boxes and such; for them a throw away makes good sense.
Perhaps you should have asked about peoples Bar-B-Q knives. You know a Bar-B-Q gun is one that is just too purdy to shoot much so you wear it to Bar-B-Q's, Funerals, Weddings and the like.

I have a tendency to lose and then find knives, so I try not to spend too much money on them, but at the same time, get ones that are good quality. My current EDC knife is this:

Well, my computer at home is down, so I am on the one at the library, so I cannot do any pics... yall will just have to trust me on this. LOL
I used to collect knives a while back, some for fun some for investments...
My EDC knife USED to be a small Kershaw Leverlock. NO... I do not mean a Camillus Leverlock... this WAS a Kershaw... a little different... Then after a few years I managed to lose that one... so I decided I wanted something a little nicer... so I went with an AKC swing-guard switch with blonde horn scales. That is a sweet little blade, and at about 7" length fits very nicely in the pocket. The 9" models are just too big in my opinion for EDC... After it started sitting "too proud" in the handle, I switched over to a Gerber Covert folder in all black. Unfortunately, I found that although very sexy, it was a bit too large, as I had the larger size and not the mini sized one. Nowadays... I have a 99 cent folder on my keychain that I will use to open letters or packages... or what ever. Thats the extant of my EDC these days.
I USED to have a couple Microtech's in the collection as well... and I have mentioned before... I used to own some beauties. One was an Exodus, with a satin blade, tanto point, non serrated, the other was a nice Walter Brend grind Nemesis. Oh.... now THAT was a SEXY blade.... Satin blade, non serrated... fired like a rocket coated with butter... oh how sweet... unfortunately, those sat in the safe... and every so often I would take them out, ogle them, and then put them back. It wasnt very cost effective. I wound up selling off most of my collection to fund gun purchases. I think it was a much more enjoyable way to spend the money! you cant use a knife as much as you can a gun, I think... well... I mean you can have a lot more fun shooting guns, than you can taking knives out of the cases and "ooh and aaah" over them, then put them away...

Hello
I agree with 1911, good thread...
I generally carry a SOG Trident Tanto weak side, 'cause it's assisted-opening and can be easily opened blade-down for when I have my KelTec P3AT in my strong hand. If I'm not packin' (the Good Lord forbid...) I'll have one of a few Benchmade Stryker Auto Tanto's on board. I like the plain blades the best, serrated is a bitch to sharpen. The fully-auto is pretty much limited to opening blade-up, though...
I have one fairly unique knife, it's the original BenchMade Bali-Song Butterfly knife. Few people realize that BenchMade started out with a friggen' butterfly knife. That's where the "Bali-Song Butterfly" logo came from.
It's the double-edged blade style that encourages you to learn how to flip it around on a single-edged butterfly....Yup, I've got the scars to this day....
The best,

Currently carrying a Kershaw 1640 Vapor. It's a Ken Onion design but manufactured in scary China and was on sale at Wal-Mart for about $20. Prior to that I had a Ka-Bar folding warthog which I managed to lose...don't ask me how.
I have a couple of fixed-blades as well. A Gerber night raider stilleto, an Anza Boddington knife, the old reliable Ka-Bar, and an ak bayonet. I used to have a Gerber BMF way back in the day but managed to break the blade when a howitzer gun crew dumped their shell carry tray on top of my gear.
Stupid gun bunnies.
I tell you what though, that Anza knife is damned handier than the Ka-Bar I used to carry on my gear.

Juggs: I've got a Vietnam issue Gerber Mk. 2. T'was the one dear old Dad carried. Love it to pieces. I'm hard on blades that aren't purely decorative though. The Mk. 2 is perfectly balanced for throwing. So, guess what happens when you biff a throw and the cross-guard hits your target (wooden)? Yep. One side of the guard broke. It's... I just never expected that to happen. I still plan on sending it off to Gerber to be repaired. Sure, I may have knocked a bit off the value of it *cough*, but I must say that it's still one hell of a knife.
On a similar note, it's not well known, but German 98k bayonets are also balanced damn near perfect for throwing as well. The balance point is right ahead of the grip. There's also an orignal KABAR around here - which I carried on my belt while vacationing in SD - and an 8 inch Randal fighting knife. I just leave that one alone. It's worth *far* too much money. Definitely a "BBQ Knife," but only if you're an afficianado.
For everyday carry, I used to use a Buck model 110 folder. It's probably 30 years old, bought originally at a PX over in Southeast Asia. I spent a lot of time working to be able to open it one-handed. It was also short enough to conceal for a reasonable period of time with the blade open. - My thought on folding knives is much the same as with handguns: if you think you'll be needing it soon, it should be ready to use; hammer back, saftey off, and in the case of a knife, unfolded. It means having to carry differently and plan ahead a bit more, but I think it's better to be prepared. - It was another that I learned the balance of and could throw if necessary, even on the draw. I've thought about a Gerber Freeman fixed blade for carrying, but haven't decided to spend the money. I'd love to carry my Winchester Bowie if it were legal. It's sharp enough (and I'm butch enough) that I've used it to shave my legs a few times. lol Hell. I may end up just making a custom fixed blade for myself. That could be extremely entertaining.
Oh, and if anyone wants to talk about the deployment and use of knives for defensive purposes, I ask that I new thread be started on the subject. We don't want to clog this one up, or pull it off track.

Off-duty, I carry a Chris Reeve "Classic" Sebenza.
On-duty, Benchmade AFCK (D2, axis lock, Spyderhole varient) and a SOG EOD 2.0. I just switched to the SOG a few months ago (from my old and much-loved Leatherman Supertool EOD varient) as a very belated reaction to Tim Leatherman's anti-gun politics. I like Tim's stuff, but I don't like Tim. It took me a while to find a good locking-blade folding tool to replace my...good locking-blade folding tool. Sigh.
When I'm wearing web gear, I used to carry a Reeve Project II in a SpecOps sheath, but also have a black Randall 14 (same sheath, yeah, I'm lazy). At the last SHOT show I picked up a Russian Phoenix II that seems workable; my next trip to the Sandbox will probably include that one.
I'm going pig-hunting over dogs (with a knife) later this week; I'm dragging out the San Mai Trailmaster for that little trip. Swords might be overkill, but a big bowie seems about right

Before I decided that I don't care if somebody gives me a hard time for flipping a knife around, I went between these two Benchmades:
690

733-01, knife 255 of 500

Now, I'm between 4 of my flippers for my EDC, but you can guess which one now gets the most use, due to size and weight. I'm always playing with one of these things. I haven't run into any trouble yet, except that I once mysteriously lost everything I had in my car when the cops searched it.

Assholes.
Benchmade 42 Anodized - You can't find these anywhere anymore, expect to pay $250-300

Spyderco Spyderfly - Probably go for like $120 if they're sold somewhere still

Knifekits Typhoon - A knife kit, like $60

Benchmade 32 BK - $150, still in production

Hi, I'm new here, but def. not new to forums. I used to collect blades, but have sold near most of them off, everything has a purpose now, no more collecting for me. Thankfully the ones I did collect accrued value, mainly Benchmades made with the Tool Steel, M2. Few other mfgr's used this difficult to machine steel, it keeps an insanely razor sharp edge, for extended periods of time. Any steel made with D2 or S30V are my faves these days..
