Full Version: Is a pistol with a stock a rifle?

I was thinking of buying a Ruger Charger pistol stock and frankening it up with an underfolder mechanism of some sort... making an underfolder 10/22. Something along the lines of the old interordnance folders but with a more modern look to them.

the thing is... the charger is a PISTOL stock... If I put a buttstock on it, does it now become a rifle, as long as I have over the 16" barrel length?

I think it would make for a great little underfolder carbine/compact rifle!! 032.gif

IF you're just gonna drop a standard 10-22 on to the stock, you're fine.

A pistol can have any barrel length, and if the barrel length happens to be 16" or more, you can put a stock on it.

Less than 16" barrel length with a stock and you're going to jail (unless you have your approved tax stamp in hand).

the short answer is if you put a underfolder stock on there (that is with a real charger pistol receiver), you have an unregistered SBR. if you put a 16 inch 10/22 barrel on before you put the stock on you are fine......

Well, I dont have a pistol permit for the state of NY... so it has to be a rifle before I mess with it... meaning before a ruger action is inserted I need the underfolder attached. No matter what length of barrel is attached...

Correct?

I also dont have any short barreled ruger actions, so I am all good in that respect... I would be using a NEW ruger 10/22 carbine, to build the underfolder. so the serial should be the proof it is a rifle.

Thats safe there too, right?

Am I going about this the right way?? 032.gif

+1 on what Ranger said. You can legally make a rifle out of a pistol, so long as it is not "readily and easily" convertable into an unregistered SBR.
The Charger is new, but there are kits available to turn a 1911 into a carbine, using a replacement 16" barrel and a specail mainspring housing and stock. You can take that Charger "stock" and drop a 10/22 rifle barreled receiver into it perfectly legally. The stock is not serial numbered, it's the receiver that counts. A pistol receiver cannot have a stock attached to it and a shorter than 16" barrel. It can have a stock attached and a 16" or more barrel. A rifle receiver cannot have a shorter than 16" barrel at all unless registered as a SBR, the stock part doesn't even enter into the equation. Of course, the 26" overall must be met with the rifle in a rifle receiver.

Oh, let me be clear... I am just buying a charger STOCK ONLY... no charger receiver...

With a rifle in the stock, do I need to maintain over 26" total length folded? That last bit has me confuzzled. hows that?

Nope. You can just drop your barreled rifle receiver right into the Charger stock and be GTG, provided that the overall length is at least 26". Nowhere does it say that a rifle actually has to have a stock, just that it must have a minimum barrel of 16" and a minimum overall of 26".
IndyArms
OH! very cool!!!

Ok, well then I am all set, as long as I keep overall length OVER 26" ...we are good to go... and I have a new project to work on... now to figure out what sort of underfolder hardware to work with... 032.gif

THANKS for all the input... I really appreciate it!!

Federal law is 26" w/ the stock fully extended. State law may vary.

if i remember correctly....an 18 inch barrel and 10/22 receiver, plus a charger like stock is over 26 inches.

a guy.. "hornet" products used to sell such stocks on eBay....just a drop in part, fully legal.

careful though if you have a 16 inch barrel.....like the 10/22 youth model....

Absolutely. But Indys question was whether he could put the Charger stock on and add the underfolder later. Therefore, if it has no folder on it, it would have to measure 26" as it is. Once a folder is attached, the 26" would be with the stock extended.

You're right. I missed that, but if it doesn't have a stock, at full extension it just doesn't add any length! naaaa.gif
