Found a large copperhead snake sliding under the ramp to my garden shed today. Too bad I didn't have a gun with me. I'll not make that mistake again. Venomous snakes do NOT belong on my property! I actually thought for a split second about picking it up by the end of the tail! That thought evaporated the instant it was formed, thank God!
Within an hour, I saw a feral cat in the same area.

Did you know cats can dance?

I'll be spreading mothballs around the house and shed to drive them away. We don't need snakebite here!

Oh come on! And I was really starting to like you too...
Snakes are cool!
Well until a venomous one bites you or someone you love....
They live here too! We just have to learn to respect them for who they are and steer clear of the dangerous ones. They DON'T chase people...well not usually
A sudden thought came to mind there of my 15 foot Burmese Python chasing me across the front yard with her head about 3 feet off the ground....lol...but I did have a rabbit in my hands at the time.
You see something like that one time and your fear of little piss ant native American snakes fades fast....

Its been my experience that cats can and will catch snakes. Feral cats can be a pain, but they can have their advantages too.

Snakes are cool. I caught more than my share when I was a kid, but if I see a venomous one around the house I will kill it quick. I'm not worried about myself w/ them, but they are too much risk to a little boy who likes to get into everything.

My mother lost her right index finger to a Copperhead bite planting flowers by her front porch. It was pretty ugly.

I was really lucky once, years back. Lived in an old shack with many holes in the floor and such, a real dump but a great bachelor pad
I dropped a small screw off of a pistol I was cleaning while sitting on the couch, could not easily find it and I got down and patted the carpet, no luck so I reached up and felt all under the couch, it was one of the ones with the skirt that hung to the floor, no luck with the screw so I figured it had to be under the couch so I picked up one end and moved it out.
There was a copperhead about 18 inches long curled up right in the middle of where the couch sat. I dont know how many times I almost hit it while sticking my hand under the couch.
I got a stick and a shovel and scooped it up and took it outside.
The only thing I can figure is that it was cool and the snake was in an inactive mode or something. Kinda shook me up.
I no longer reach into places that I cannot see.

stepped on a western diamondback many years ago.....fortunately i was stepping on its head....the best place to step....but then you have to get off it without the bite....fortunately realization that you as a 13 year old are standing on a poisonous snake allows you to levitate.....which i did.....
may be a genetic thing......i can make my dad levitate as well....just yell snake behind him....he'll be in the air for a good 4-6 seconds......pretty impressive really!

My neighbor's black lab has the run of the neighborhood. Nice dog. Very friendly. He runs off pretty much anything that doesn't belong here. I'd hate to hear he got bitten. The copperhead I saw was about the diameter of my two index finger, and there was about a foot of snake sticking out from under the ramp. I hope it didn't drop any little ones under there.
I'm putting mothballs out around the house and shed tomorrow to drive them off. Next time I'll have a gun and blast the little f'er!

A long handled shovel makes short work of snakes. Copperheads are plentifull here, but shy and seldom seen. We do get 4 and 5' blacksnakes. I had to kill one a few years ago because he was bold enough to climb on the front window sill to try to get to the robbins nest on the porch light.

copperheads, diamondback rattlesnakes, and cotton mouth water mossicans are the snakes that we have to watch out for here, lots of dense brush and woods around the house and a pond a stone throw away so they are out there.
I have seen some rattlers and cotton mouths that were huge, the copperheads are not usually all that big, but they have the nastiest temper of the three IMO.
Found a dead rattlesnake that was right at 6 ft, he must have been an old sucker. Was glad he was dead.

As far as moccasins go, if I could dedicate my life to making it an endangered species, I would!
Got bit by one when I was 12!

Man I hear you. All of the "kids" are in there late teens and older now, and if they go to the pond or out in the brush goofing off, I still tell them to watch for snakes.

i agree with the cat guy. my cat kills snkes including copper heads often. they also keep the population low due to competing with snakes for food.

hehehe Good one.
I've had my run ins with a few black mamba's a puff adder and a cape cobra. Never had the mis-fortune of running into a snake here in the US.
I usually get a big rock, brick or stick and beat the shit out of it.
