http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article231608.eceA SHAKEN police gun instructor told colleagues after he accidentally shot a civilian worker with a Magnum: I didn’t know it was loaded.
Blundering PC David Micklethwaite was horror-struck as the powerful revolver went off in his hand as he gave a safety lecture at his force HQ.
Keith Tilbury, 50 ? one of 12 civilian staff sitting in a semi-circle ? was blasted in the chest and thrown off his chair.
He survived by a miracle after the bullet from the .44 Smith & Wesson ? made famous in the Dirty Harry films starring Clint Eastwood ? went straight through him, somehow missing vital organs.
A police source said: Everybody thought the man was dead ? there was blood everywhere. After a second or two of silence it was total panic.

That's the kind of thing that can happen when people get complacent and think they can dispense with basic gun safety.

there's not really much info on that article & it's the Sun. who knows, it might've been .22LR ;-)
but seriously, goes to show once again: shot placement is key.

Well if he was blown off his chair & didn't jump-up & run out of the room in a panic, I'd say that it was a "one shot stopper".

One shot stop, to me, means that he doesn't have to bleed out and cannot be resuscitated. JMO I bet he hurt like anything though. Alternate opinions and views always encouraged.

Yeah, yeah. Just messin wit ya.
Simply rendering them no longer an immediate threat is stopping them. We all hope for one shot kills though, because it simplifies the situation.

The big question is could the guy have jumped back up and returned fire if it had been a altercation, or was he out of the fight so to speak and waiting for the medics to show up and save him.

To me, stop = stops being a threat. There are a lot of variables (pain tolerance, will to survive/attack, etc.) that will determine what will "stop" an
individual. I think it's accurate to say that no single handgun round will stop everybody. I think it's also safe to say if you get a shot or two in someone's upper spine or brain, they're going to stop what they're doing.
For those reasons, I think shot placement is more important than caliber.
That being said,

I can't believe that guy took a .44 mag!!!!

well, thrown off his chair, or fallen of his chair, it's all the same really. as long as the bullet doesn't send him flying.
btw, mythbusters also 'busted' other myths that later turned out to be true, ye know. (but that's not the case here, people drop like a sack o' potatoes when they're shot dead, but they could drop off a chair anyway)

If his leg muscles went rigid at the time of impact, that could cause him to go over backwards in the chair, causing the impression that he was thrown back, could it not?

Mythbusters blow it a lot, many times they just want to have fun and some of their test are hardly "controlled".
I've seen deer picked up and thrown backwards by both .30-06 and .50 muzzle loader rounds.
Will it happen EVERY time? Of course not. Is it possible? Of course!

Great movie! An all time favorite!Well,.357 in standard ammo is a better proven man stopper than a .44 with standard ammo.Why?.44 is made for penetration for hunting and punches through, wasting alot of energy not deposited in a light weight target.A .357 dumps the energy better, but, exotic rounds like Magsafe can change that....
