Tossing out Ideas, How about a build off on the forum for a one month-two month period of time ie, A start and finish time to post. Maybe seek donations from members who do business here and maybe elsewhere, T-Shirts, caps, SRT trigger group (mmm). Have Shootgun and rifle catagories. Just a few suggestions like Best Looking build, Best How to tread, Best new innovation. No professional builds but have the pros for help and suggestions. Maybe a $5.00 donation to the forum to enter?
Tell me what you think it may be a fun way to get new and even older members involved and some P.M.A. back into it.

Toss out some ideas. Allowing for time, parts, paychecks, oven when wifes not home etc. what would be a good time frame? Should we do a poll? I don't know the proper protocol for soliciting business members maybe some of them will chime in?

Sounds like a cool idea AllJacks! It would be great to have something fresh to talk about. All the usual subjects and the ho hum, constant...well nevermind...are getting old around here.
Give some people a chance to show what they can do. I'm in for sure!
ArcFault
I'll play. I have an idea or two sitting on the back burner.

Would the poll system be used so the whole forum could vote for their favorites in each category, or would there be judges?

Great idea! Maybe both (Peoples Choice Award?) what do you think?

Cobra 76 two
For those who are interested and want to go ahead and get started soon on their builds, they should be able to post when ready, that they are starting. Maybe even take a "before" pic of the stock Saiga, or one they want to spruce up, in front of something that shows the date? (TV, computer, daily newspaper?) ...just thinking out loud.

I have an S-12 new in box, still sealed in plastic, that I would be using. 000.gif

I'd like to see it happen!

Just some thoughts. I do like the idea.

1. You need more than one class. You need a class of first time builders; a class of people who have done fewer than say, four or five conversions and a class, which for lack of a better word, we could call the "unlimited" class (sounds like boat racing). These would be the experienced people who have done more than five or so conversions. No offense to my good friend Cobra, but an raw beginner like me should not have to face off against such awesome competition. The Americans beating the Russians in Olympic Ice hockey was a once in a life time event!

2. The Judges should be the board, by popular vote. This would end up making it a beauty competition, unless we had some disinterested members conduct a "fire off" of the top three or five Saigas in each category. How the performance of the top guns would be done I leave up to more experienced members.

3. There should be prizes awarded.

4. For extreme good will, if the participants are willing, the "Grand Prize" winning Saiga should be paid for by the members and auctioned to the highest bidder on our board or GunBroker (or where ever) and we give the proceeds to a Veterans Charity.

I know this varies a bit fro Alljacks original concept, but I am merely throwing out other possibilities.
Just a few thoughts/ideas for your consideration.

I would be honored, but I lack the expertise to honorably serve my brothers and sisters in such a lofty capacity. Maybe we could get the Professional builders to be the judges. To protect their business interests, so as not to offend potential customers, their ballets could be secrete. I would be willing to be the custodian and official counter of those anonymous and secrete votes.

I like the "people's choice" category idea. I also like have the most experienced amoung us being judges. This is a great idea!!

actually, even having a category for a winner picked by one of our sponsoring professionals (i think someone suggested) is cool too

we should pool the $ make it 10$ entry and 5$ goes to forum and the other 5$ goes to the winner.

This is going to be cool to watch go down. I agree there should be multiple classes to seperate add on builds from the guns which have a lot of fabrication work done. That might also open things up to some or pro/machinist/smith builders to come up with some new, innovative stuff to showcase their ability. Also, if voted on by the membership, can it be set up to keep people from being able to vote more than once? I'd also like to hear some details on the build from the builder, not just a picture post. Sometimes it things that you don't see, like adjustable gas systems/short tube systems/trigger work, etc that has pure performance gains, but aren't something our eyes key in on.

I would like to volunteer to be a judge of this event, if no one has any problems with that...

Personally, I have converted 9 saigas, and all came out to my satisfaction... however, I am not interested in ANY whistles or bells, in my conversions...I just want it un-neutered and working properly, I dont like flamboyance in *MY* guns... so that is why I opt NOT to participate in this build off.

ALSO... that is why I offer my services as a judge in whatever capacity the populace deems satisfactory for judgments... 032.gif

I have a very keen eye... and I can be VERY meticulous in my observations... I have done a few and feel I can give criticism where it is due, both positive and negative and of course be OBJECTIVE, as I have nothing personal to gain by any of it!

That is why I would like to be on the panel of judges, if that is cool with y'all... 032.gif

I would also start a thread with details and rules, as well as a list of entrants and judges so we all will know who is who, as I think this thread will become too complex to have a clear list of the specifics!

once we get the rules laid out, and I think Max should have pretty much final say, if money is going to change hands with the forum and any member... we will post a FINAL RULES post, that those willing to sign up for the build off will sign in in THAT post... almost like signing the contract... you read the rules, you signed up, you are in... that sort of thing... 032.gif
Judges will also sign up in that post too... recommendations should be here for judges... so they can opt in or out...

Anything else lets get it on the table!! 032.gif

Thanks again your expertise and help it is valued and appreciated.

Damn! All this fun, and I am in the middle of 2 AK builds. My "fun" budget is depleted for a while.
ArcFault
So, it's established that it needs to be a new build.

Should the base gun be bone stock, or will a complete rebuild or massive alteration to an existing conversion be acceptable?

Can there be more than one entry per member?

Not really questions so much as ideas in the form of questions. huh.gif
vjor
Interesthing, I will say if U have a judge have to be pro builders.
rangerdavid
i think if we have different categories, then at least one of them should be for a conversion from the bone stock hunting rifle as it is imported. off to gunbroker to see what's for sale now............
1911
From a logistical standpoint I would like to see a sub forum dedicated to this. Additionally, I would like to see a final build picture or two along with a detailed list of what was done: For all the builds in ONE thread leaving out the builders name. If really interested you could look at their individual threads to put it together but this would avoid favoring one over another just because a "known" name is posted with the finished weapon. Just another thought for the hopper.

1911
IndyArms
so we would have the final images be shown ANONYMOUSLY... I agree that THAT is a kickass idea!! that way there can be NO BIAS!

Excellent idea, 1911!

Also... I will start working on polls and stuff if/when we get a little further along and things are "finalized" as far as the "rules" go... and Max has his say on how he wants the thing to run... at that point, I will take the rules, post them in a thread, that same thread will be the "sign up" thread, and as mentioned... maybe there will be 2 or 3 categories of builds... I mean obviously, a FIRST time builder couldnt stand a chance against Tromix builds... there is just far more expertise and equipment behind a tromix that the average person would never have access to... so that will totally need to be addressed.

lets not get too carried away... different categories for builds... different categories for skill level... we could wind up with 9 winners?!?! how do we work that out?!?!?

We need to try to keep it SIMPLE yet FAIR... fewer categories, fewer skill levels...

we need to finalize the entry fee structure, and the prize structure...

We need to figure out what would be and how one would be awarded as far as a "grand prize" goes... etc..etc...

Again, I would like Max's input on these topics, as the final say... money flowing into and out of the forum... thats HIS CALL alone.

I was gonna suggest the same thing.

I also would like a lengthy time frame, with jobs and families and scratching my own ass, a couple of months could cut it close. On the other hand too much time could lead to boredom and consternation.

I agree with Indy that things should be kept simple. If it works out to be a success then perhaps it can be a recurring event (annual?), additional categories could be added then, once the bugs are worked out or whatever.
22_Shooter
+1 on the anonymous entries part, as far as voting.

I can't wait to see how this pans out 027.gif .
Gunfixr
I see the pros are to stay out. Am I considered a pro? I do builds for customers, but not everyday, and I'm not nationally known.

I got a couple of builds coming, and one is a 20ga. that I've already been told to have fun with. Only problem is I can't offer it up for auction, since it's owned by someone else.

I wanna play.
WarriorJudge
I offer my services in whatever capacity I can be useful. I would be willing to be a "lay" or "novice" judge. I think having an interested, but untrained eye involved is a good, not a bad thing. I do not wish to compete, so I can participate in any other way, if the moderators or Max so desire.

I would like to go back to the auctioning off a winning rifle idea. While this idea does adds a bit of complication to the contest, I think we could do some good with the proceeds and get some good publicity for the board, the brand and the members, all in a very positive way. But, bottom line, we could easily raise over $2,000.00 + for a worth charity. Because selecting a charity is difficult, perhaps the Moderators and Max could pick four or five worthy charities (veteran related I hope) and we could do a poll/vote to pick the most popular choice.

I think this will be very fun to watch and a great distraction from some of the petty back biting that has been going on. Let's get back to why were are here, and have some fun (and maybe, raise some money for a good cause).
