Is anyone schedualing, planning or hosting a .22 "3-gun" yet? With ammo prices what they are, I figured it'd be a natural - at least for the rifle and pistol parts... I have seen a lot of buzz about this here and elsewhere, but nothing firm, and nothing remotely close to me (SE GA)...
Just curious... I'd like to play

some here in Tn will let you use a 22 for the rifle part but not for the pistol section

Hey that doesn't sound like a bad idea! Already got an accurate .22 pistola with 9" bbl. Been lookin for a good excuse to get a .22 AK anyway! Let's see...Krinker Plinker or that hot new Russian babe? hmmmmm
What about shotgun though?
Oh yeah! Got that covered too! Snake shot!

Apparently, the people who moved up the road from the range where I been shooting 3-gun have been complaining about the noise- go figure- so we been shooting the rifles on only one stage where the berms surround the area. We used .22 rifles for the other stage as a "guest firearm". I used my Tac'd out 10/22. It was actually pretty cool.

You know, that's not a bad idea to cut down on training costs anyway. I started shooting my 9mm instead of my .45 more because the ammo was cheaper. And I bought a .22 rifle for "warming up" before shooting the .308. I can probably justify the cost of buying a .22 handgun like the Walther and that nifty little .22 carbine because the ammo is tons cheaper.

I cant really see how the 22lr or 22mag snake shot could work past 30 feet, and really only then, on balloons. Nevermind they dont cycle reliably in any autoloader that I know of, and I have seen problems with them in lever and slide action 22's, as well. I guess the "shotgun" stage would have to be with a bolt action....
The closest 3 gun sanctioned range to NYC is about a 250 mile drive, inside NYS. They closed the range in hyde park (about 50 miles out of NYC) a couple years to 3 gun matches, due to complaints of "high volume of automatic weapons fire", but at the same time, there are two large mobile home parks in VERY close proximity to it.

Hmmm,
My old Winchester .22 semi has never had a problem with rat shot/ snake shot.
Nor has my Browning Challenger ever had a problem with it.........

I was just thinking that 12ga and 20 ga would remain, but .22 lr rifles and pistols would replace the "normal" rifle and pistol of a 3-gun. While not exactly cheap, if you reduce the cost of rifle and pistol the .22 lr prices, then 12 ga isn't quite as big of a deal (even though Wal-Mart 100 paks are nearing $20 around here...

).
I just see the the cost of feeding the rifle and pistolof a typical 3-gun as being the big $$$ - whereas the shotgun alone is not so bad. (going with the 2 out of 3 senario...)
It seems that smaller bores in SG's are usually WAY more expensive that 12 or 20 ga... So - I see no need to "down-bore" the SG in 3-gun...
Accuracy is accuracy and while a .22lr may not take down a 40 lbs steel popper or make an impressive hole, the point is to hit your target, make good, quality hits and make the most of your rifle and pistol - in whatever caliber...
I figured it'd be a way to keep the sport (training) alive during these times...

I was thinking about the population encroachment, to be honest with you, macbeau.......
balloons might not be a bad idea really, if that is the case.
the older guns do cycle 22LR rounds that are birdshot, but that is because they were designed 100 years ago, and fall into black powder standards, but I have still seen jamming occur (I hunted rats at 4am for years, in our chicken coupe in NY when I was a kid) . the ONLY 22LR's I have seen work well are with botl guns, for shotshell 22LR.
a norinco belgian browning that was in production overseas for a couple years might do it, but I still doubt it, after 20 shots. granted, if it was chambered for S L LR etc, it works, but there are only a handful of OLD guns that do that anymore.....plus they dont even make Long carts, so far as I know.....
Maybe tape balloons to your shotgun targets, for the 22 snakeshot!!! Im not sure if a pellet will hit it however, and why sneak into a range and compete when they dont want you there to begin with? a shotgun isnt going to help.
I thought this was a purist tossing of the 22LR 3 gun idea?
If its going to other extremes, I am out of this discussion. I cannot suggest much, in that case.

Again - (sigh) I am just pushing the idea of subbing .22lr rifles and pistols into a 3-gun senario... .22 "rat shot" is not easy (or cheap) to come by and 12/20 guage are still not toooo bad in terms of price... But centerfire rifle and pistol are another story. Even reloading components for these are $$$$.
[As far a shootin' critters goes- not that it had anything to do with this post - I have bagged about 11 Armadillos here in just under 2 years using Aguila .22 SSS and Colibri. I have also taken 1 snapping turtle, 3 bullfrogs and 6 snakes out of my pool in the same time frame, using this ammo. ]
I was just wondering if anyone had considered doing a "down-scale" 3-gun using .22 lr rifles and pistols with 12 or 20 ga (or lesser gauge) being allowed...

Yeah, MacBeau, I knew what you were talking about. We just subbed the rifle with the .22, and only on two of the stages. We still used our regular pistols and shotguns. I did set up the 10/22 the way it is for the express purpose of being able to use it for cheap tactical rifle practice.
BVamp, CCI still makes .22 Longs.
