Gents,

I am looking at a job in Philly. Early stages, (recruiter, called, liked my background, want to talk more) no idea if i will get the offer, but trying to get info on the area. Anyone here from the Philly area and know the good neighborhoods from the bad?

Looks like the best places to live are actually out of PA, but also trying to be conscious of the gun laws should i move.

thanks all.

Stay away from Jersey they are capped at 15 rounds and hollow points get you jail time.
Stay away from MD, they are capped at 20 rounds.
Philly mayor just tried to pass some laws that went against the state constitution, so the county is kinda whacked but the rest of the state ain't bad

Any particular info about suburbs of Philly? trying to figure our where we would live in the area and what we could afford. ideally within about a 15 mile commute but i could go longer if there are better areas farther out. thinking west or north, not east of course.

Thanks

Look into Hatboro, PA.
Roughly 1/2 hour from Center City Philadelphia, stable taxes, good schools, located in Montgomery County (one of the nicest counties next to Philly). I have two friends that live in that town and are very happy with their decision. I've been trying to convince the wife to pack up and move there with no luck.

Edited to add: PA is a Shall Issue state and most of the counties surrounding Philly will hand you a CCW card in a matter of days. Philly will interview every single person you list as a reference and will depend on when they get around to it.

Can't help ya there, I'm lost somewhere in the hills in the middle of the state, there are plenty of guys from down that way on the PAFOA forum, I'll look and see if there is a topic about it already

Hey Ranger I also want to add that for the privilege of working in Philadelphia you'll get hit with the city wage tax. I believe it's 3.9% if you live outside the city and about 4.6% if you live in the city. Also parking in the city itself costs about $24/day in the center city area. Lucky for me, the company I worked for had their own parking lot and charged motorcycle riders $3/day.

Also, stay away from NJ. Don't get lured by the real estate values because the property taxes are steep in the decent areas. And the gun laws suck ass. Like rancid, diarrhetic moose ass. Naturally, the politicos in this state are blaming the lax gun laws in PA for our violent crime involving guns.

BITE MY SHINY METAL ASS!!!!

why in the hell would anyone want to work/live there with that sort of BS taxes? Parking i think would be included with the job, but i would have to find out more.

of course i may not even get the offer, but the more info i have for negotiations the better.

thanks gunny!

Because of the smoking hot women walking around in sun dresses in center city, especially around Rittenhouse Square. Also, one of THE best places to drink Belgian beer is at 16th and Chestnut (Monk's Cafe). And also the bar that I shoot steel tip darts for is right off South Street, another great place to hang out.

Seriously, I loved working in the city because of the history and the eclectic neighborhoods. It was awesome to walk down the same city streets that Ben Franklin would have walked in his day.

The city wage tax sucks but at the same time I didn't have NJ state taxes deducted from my pay because they have some sort of reciprocity deal going on. I reported what I paid in Philly wage tax to NJ (which was a higher rate than NJ state taxes) and NJ was kind enough to keep the change. It stinks if you live in PA and work in Philly because you're getting taxed by the state and the city. So you definitely need to factor in the city wage tax when negotiating a salary.
