Ever since Heller decision came down last week and i heard Chicago's Mayor Daley comment, i have just sort of been boiling in side. His comments were that maybe we should just do away with the court system and go back to the wild west - go back to shootouts in the streets, and that we had to ban handguns because of the deaths they cause, but also the increased medical expenses for those maimed by handguns.

so....my problem is that he thinks that the courts can fix everything..... ...well the courts may or may not be able to convict a guy, they may or may not actually sentence appropriately and may or may not acutally make the guys stay in for a full sentence.....so far....that is a lot of may or may nots.....

The lawyers and courts will not protect you when the BG is in your house and your family is barricaded in a bedroom hoping the police get there soon.

In addition to this it assumes that the police are going to show up in time and arrest the guys before they rape and kill my wife, kill my daughter, kill me, and take all my stuff. What is the response time to get to your house like? Ever tried it? (I was not pleased with the response time when i called about a suspicious vehicle parked across the street one time.)

This also assumes that you can actually get to a working phone and make a call to 911.

This also assumes that the police will actually show up - anyone remember the murdered college student in Madison, WI this year? She dialed 911 but the phone went dead before they could talk to her.... Dispatcher failed to follow procedure, and no cops were sent.....20 year old girl murdered as a result.

That is a shitload more assuming than i plan to do when my family is a risk.

But....to Daley's other point......the cost to treat all these maimed gunshot victims. Yes gunshot wounds can be very expensive to treat, but some are also treat and release that same night.....flesh wounds......not so expensive.... I don't care about how much it is going to cost to treat the SOB after i shot him for attempting to harm my family - not my issue.

The mayor is putting the expense of treating the criminals i shoot in defense of my life and my family ahead of our safety? Excuse me Mr. Mayor?....what is the value of my life? is it more or less than the price to treat the bastard i just shot for trying rape/murder/burglerize my family?.......

are the criminals the only constituents he panders to? Who the hell would vote for this guy after putting price of medical care ahead of your life and safety? How could you vote for a guy who so misunderstands the power of the legal system.

So, with his obsession concerning hospital costs, he must be vehemently anti-crimigrant, huh? I mean, since we (taxpayers) wind up picking up the tab for virtually everything that befalls them, from the flu to a heart transplant.
Not to mention their uninsured asses causing havoc with people and property on our roadways...

Good points RangerM9. I think that Mayor Daley's positions on firearms are simply rationally untenable. Some people seem to live in an ivory tower world and confuse theory with reality.

Your point about police response times is right on target in my opinion. Where I am, a TRULY EXCEPTIONAL police response time would be about 5 minutes from the time they get the call. If the police department is busy, or if you live in a rural area, you are probably looking at in excess of 15 minutes from the time the call is received. These rough time estimates assume that it is dispatched as an emergency (in-progress) call. If not, the response times are typically much longer. A great deal of really bad stuff can happen in even as little as 5 minutes. The fact is that, despite their best efforts, most police responses are after the fact. We need to be able to defend ourselves and our families effectively. That means being able to keep and bear firearms.

On a related note, did anyone else hear that the Chicago Tribune editorialized that the 2nd Amendment should be repealed?

If he is so concerned then why doesn't he run and enforce an exercise program for the fat people in DC, I bet a ton of them are on medicaid/welfare...

Most people that make asinine statements like that live in gated communities where the police are at their homes in less than 2 minutes. They are not in touch with the real world.

I live in a rural area and last winter some thief was breaking into a gas station across from my house. I called 911 and the operator is asking all these questions about me, my age, my address......who the hell cares about me, come and get this fool. Anyway, it took the state boys over 45 mins. to get there......20 mins. too late. The cops show up the next day and grill me for 20 mins. Screw it, the next time I just won't call. I don't need the headache.....45 mins. is totally unacceptable, and then they want answers to their questions (me to do their police work). At least I know that in the future if someone is stupid enough to break into my house, that I shoot first, call 911 later.......the 20 questions game and the response time leaves me no choice, and I can use that precious time wasted to load my gun and protect my family.

Good point about the Crimigrants using our medical systems for free. Daley is a moron.

I have learned the same thing. Ten, 15 30 45 mins isnt going to protect me, whatever the laws are. I dont really CARE if the criminal goes to jail or not, I want to stay alive before that time comes, if I can help it, and I think my family friends and neighbors feel the same way.

Exactly....i'm perfectly happy to let the legal system work and not have to shoot someone, but the cops better get there before i have to take action to defend myself/my family, or all bets are off.

Additionally Daley wants to rely on the court system and lawyers to protects us - well i don't see the lawyers showing up at my house at 2 am when the bastard is trying to break in....how exactly is that protecting the public?

Lawyers don't effectively protect the public because by they time they are involved, the crime is already over with, it just prevents the next crime IF they get a conviction.

Lawyers are VERRY good at protecting their own incomes.
