i was getting out of a JLG lift (man basket)...i stepped out onto a pile of boards and kept ahold of the safety rails to keep my balance...the door has spring tension and when it closed it split my fingernail in half. it didn't look too bad until the pool of blood ran down my finger and i realized it was TOTALLY FUCKED! that happened at 10:30 am and i didn't get it looked at until 2ish...it took THAT long because i got the run around at 3 different doctors! this puts a damper on my gun fun for a while...and possibly the paycheck...you cant really tell but the front half of my nail IS THERE...its just covered in blood and smashed down into my finger. I'm just glad it wasn't my playing hand (guitar) because i don't know if theres going to be nerve damage or not...THE KICKER...my insurance started YESTERDAY! anit that some shit!!!??? (even though workmans comp will be covering it) oh and the safety guy...ya it was his FIRST DAY!!! LOL...

Sick tooth,
I had something similar on my left index finger. I drilled right down the top with a 3/8" drill bit in a locked guide.
it ran around and sliced my finger to the bone like a spiral cut ham, The blood was.,.... well so much a doc was looking at it pronto,.. they could not stitch, there was nothing to stitch to. so they cleaned it ,.. put on some super glue,..
and then this neat little finger sock, (I asked for a couple extra), kinda like a condom for your finger, but breathable like a sock.
anyway 5 years later it works fine

Sicktooth, man you can still shoot, my right arm bareley works and I

As long as it was comp... no worries about your insurance... work will have to pick up ALL the bills...
It does suck, though... I know a lot about being out on comp... stitches here and there, surgery on both wrists, and surgery on right knee... been there, done all that...
At least you are alive... and worse case scenario... you learn to use a different finger to pull the trigger!!
Get well soon!!!

my only experience similar involved a large paper cutter (you know, the big swing arm type) and my thumb slipping under the safety bar as i brought the handle down on a stack of paper.
took the first .5 CM right off the end of my left thumb and thunbnail. After the initial shock and pain control work off.......even the memory of the pain touching it to something makes me want to vomit at times.
yeouch
heal up soon!

Will: it was another bad day for me AGAIN! i JUST bought a new 9 amp dewalt grinder, got it Friday as a matter of fact...i cut the cord not 1 BUT 2 TIMES today...i ended up throwing all of my shit at the ground, yelling FUCK as loud as my vocals would let me...kicked my shit around some more...then stomped off and had to walk around for a few to cool my jets...what a shitty weekend...

I was pulling the trigger pin out of a Browning Hipower clone with needle nose pliers when it came out real quick and the needle pliers and jammed them into my chin. That was fun and left a scar for years.

Ahh, the joys of self injury.
Sicktooth: don't worry about nerve damage, at worst you'll have a dead fingertip. No biggie. Your biggest enemy here is going to be infection. Take good care of it and do exactly as you're told as far as cleaning, dressing changes, etc. Was there any bony involvement with this injury or was it strictly soft-tissue? A fractured fingertip can be very painful but usually heals up just fine with minimal treatment.
Its going to be really tender for a while (don't have to tell you that, do I?) so you probably will be off the shottie for a while, however, once things have a chance to settle down you could probably just use your middle finger until the index finger is completely healed. Just my professional opinion, YMMV.

My Dad used to say "patience is a learned virtue".
I have the scars to proove it.
Still have a purple fingernail from my recent AK builds.

Sicktooth---looks like you have a sick finger

That looks like it had to hurt.
Back when I was a bit younger at a tender 18 I was working in the trades hanging Sheetrock. The guy I was working with was an old timer and him and I could really screw off a job quick. Anyway, the two of us were in a small walk-in closet getting it screwed up and in typical fashion both guns were running on the dead-mans switch. He put a screw on his gun just as I was turning around and I caught it right in the inside of my wrist.
Went to the hospital and the Dr. took a quick look and came back with a screw driver. I was like wtf--ain't no way you are going to use that on me and had to explain to him how he would have to push on it to get it to work...if it worked at all. I convinced him to unscrew it with his fingers while pulling out. Well, two days later I was back to work with a sore wrist but no worse for wear. It doesn't even bother me to this day.
Get better soon Toothie.
