Good lead is getting hard to find. The best "virgin" lead (not mixed w/ tin, zinc, antimony or linotype) comes out of Canada, but it costs $$$$$ - big time - most in shipping! - and is full of sulfer (lots of flux and lots of skimming)...
1. Check out the local scrap metal places and see what they have.
a. Old lead plumbing and roofing is great.
b. So is old shielding from lab/clincs that have (had) an x-ray/x-ray facility.
c. Wheelweights are okay, but high in tin and antimony.
d. Marine lead (sail boat keels, anodes, skegs) end up with lots of zinc and tin.
(NOTE* - Stay away from lead/acid battery plates unless you are properly prepared to deal with the caustic nature of these products. Seriously - recycled / old battery lead with make your testicles shrivel up and fall off! or kill you...)
2. Local Recycling Center - Some won't sell to private individuals because OSHA considers lead a "haz-mat" these days.
3. A local foundry - some people have them and you can get a 200lbs "pig" of lead from them!... I don't and can't.
4. Junkyard / scrap yard / landfill - I couldn't hurt to check, but
NO battery lead....
5. Most tire place will give (or sell cheaply) their old wheel weights, but some keep it as haz-mat or "revenue re-couping" product for recycling. It couldn't hurt to ask...
