Full Version: other AK parts on a Saiga ???

In preparing for some conversions I'd like to get a couple things done that require a talented tig welder - of which I am NOT and have not located nearby me as of yet dry.gif
I know there are excellent talented vendors on this board but I believe most stick with full conversions or bigger paying jobs (which only makes complete sense).

Whenever I do decide on someone to take on my projects, I hesitate to sacrifice up my OE Saiga parts to this project. 009.gif
Ideally, I would like to have the custom work done on 'replacement parts" first, then if I like it I can go back and get 2nd/3rd sets done for my other guns, as well as reinsert the OE matching components back in the first saiga.
The very few sources I've seen for OE Saiga parts are usually Sold Out, Unavailable Now, or perhaps high in cost.

So.... I'd like to know if other brand AK parts (Bulgy, Hungarian, E.German, etc. Also stamped vs. milled? ) will replace the various Saiga parts exactly?
That way I can either scan various ForSale boards for a deal or pick up from a vendor like Kvar, etc and then have the initial work done at a leisurely pace - and without having my guns unavailable or worrying about Effin up my OE parts biggrin.gif

Components I'm interested in are:
- Bolt carrier [I want to get a Galil style knob lever fabricated, like Tromix & many others do]
- Selector lever [I want to get an extended lip made, like ETAC or others do]
- Extended Mag Release [I have a rivet on unit, but interested in a nicely designed welded unit]

While I have your attention - would appreciate if anyone can tell me........
On a 7.62x39 Saiga, is there any problems using a gas block w/bayo lug like this: http://www.k-var.com/shop/product.php?prod...=292&page=1
Can I use any stamped 7.62 "Ribbed" reciever top cover on my Saiga? like this one: http://www.k-var.com/shop/product.php?prod...=320&page=1

Guess thats it for now. I welcome any helpful thoughts or suggestions on my ideas. Sorry for such a long post - just figured I'd get all these questions out of the way at once & there's no better place to ask big_smile.gif

Often the gas block diameters do not exactly match the Saiga barrels. Have had instances where extra metal had to be welded to the block to decrease the diameter so it fit the barrel.

Thanx tritium,
Are there any standards per each make (Saiga's, Romy's etc.) ??

What do you trying to do? Old style AKM rifle.

That gas block has a ID of 0.587 the OD of the barrel were the GB goes
on a Saiga .591.

For whats say on the page the holes for the pins are 0.610 apart
the holes on a saiga are about .998 center to center.

Everything can be done, but you have to think in the position of that gas port
on the block with the gas port on the barrel. Plus some other stuff.
