BREAKING NEWS — An agreement that will allow the United States to install a missile defense battery in Poland exposes the ex-communist nation to an attack, a Russian general said Friday.

Poland and the U.S. struck a deal on Thursday to deepen military ties and place a missile interceptor base in Poland.

Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn, deputy chief of the Russian general staff told reporters Friday that the agreement exacerbates U.S.-Russian relations that are already tense because of fighting between Georgian and Russian forces. He said the deal "cannot go unpunished."

And in the strongest threat Russia has issued in reaction to plans to put elements of a missile defense system in former Soviet satellite nations, the Interfax news agency quoted Nogovitsyn as saying Poland was risking attack.

"Poland, by deploying (the system) is exposing itself to a strike — 100 percent," Interfax quoted Nogovitsyn as saying.

Washington says the planned system, which is not yet operational, is needed to protect the U.S. and Europe from possible attacks by missile-armed "rogue states" like Iran. The Kremlin, however, feels it is aimed at Russia's missile force.

Poland is a member of NATO! It seems the Bear is stirring while singing "Back to the USSR". It would appear that the liberal ban on oil exploration/new refining for the past number of years is having it's result. We import 70% of the oil that we consume and as a result we are dependent rather than independent and oil is $120 - $140/barrel rather than $40/barrel. Net result - Russia is flush while our economy is in shambles, it is us this time who are stuck in the Middle East just as they were a few sort years ago. They now have the money to feed their aggressive appetite and know that we have no appetite for more war. Perhaps we push to see how far we can? It will be interesting to see how this predicament that has in large part been produced by our own government will play out.

On a radio porgram yesterday they commented on how Russia was employng some of Hitler's old tactics, as during WWII the Germans invaded the Sudetenland to incorporate it back into Germany as the ethnic population there was German. Now so does Russia with South Ossetia. The commentator postulated if they get away with this invasion, then the Ukraine may well be next.

Well... we did promise not to allow former Soviet satellite nations into NATO in an effort to reassure Russia that we were not attempting to surround them. We broke that promise.

Perhaps a look see to find if perhaps your chosen topic has already been posted would be in order.
