So the other day my father in law shows up to talk to the wife. All is going well and finally he asked me if I had any new toys to show him. So I pulled out my M1 Garand. When he first saw it, he asked me where I found the "Mauser". I quickly corrected him for his blasphemy and informed him what it was. So then I tell him that I always wanted the same kind of rifle my grandfather carried in Europe. He then commented on how heavy it was and that he would have never carried such a heavy weapon and would have abandoned it. I smiled and told him that my grandfather was in the bulge. That meant nothing to him. I then described what happened in the battle of the bulge and what the Germans did to American POW's. So then I asked him if he would have abandoned his rifle knowing about the German treatment of POW's. "Hell no" were his words. I just smiled some more.

It's a shame when you think about it, that I had to tell a guy 30 years older than me about the Battle of the Bulge. Go figure.

That is sad, just image the kids that are coming out of high school these days. Most liberal schools don't even teach that part of history.

trust me, it's not just a "liberal" school problem. state-run K-12 kids don't retain any useful history or economic knowledge. these days, the history channel is a better education. schools keep dumbing down and technology keeps getting better. hell, the kids that can't take geometry and calculus are the ones that take a basic math classes like 'math of money', which is potentially the most useful class in life, but the teachers still aren't capable of making the kids 'get it'.

You mean the war of Northern Aggression?

Heh Heh.

Oh well. In the situation of the Father in law or similar individual they always are intent on trying to maintain an upper hand somehow, either dismissing your provided information or throwing out some stupid comment much like what this joker did. I hate that shit. Oh well...

I can't comment on what people learn in school, I never slacked on history of modern war or older wars for that matter, but some people are so despondent they aren't aware that history does repeat itself.

I know for me it seems like WW2 was yesterday, my grandfather is a veteran of that war. So his experiences were always at my fingertips, however, most of my generation is detached and pay no attention to what used to be.

Sad... but we'll have round 3 soon enough. People will either wake up or die.

My eyes are wide, I could care less about the greater unwashed.... but that's just me. bad_smile.gif

No offense to your FIL, but stupidity has no age barrier.

Yeah, I admit, my father in law ain't the smartest guy around. I just thought it was funny how quickly his attitude changed about hauling a heavy 30-06 rifle when I told him that the Germans were shooting the prisoners. It's odd how people don't value things until they realize that they need it. Unfortunately, people tend to forget what they need rather quickly. I live on the U.S. border with Mexico, and I can tell you guys that violent crime is alive and flourishing in Mexico. I can also tell you that the opinion of many people I know in law enforcement as to the number one deterrence keeping that level of violence from spilling over to our side is that the Mexican Drug Dealers and Mexican Military KNOW that U.S. Citizens have the right to bear arms and can defend themselves.

in all fairness, the allied forces killed a metric fuckton of prisoners as well, but that never got a lot of attention since they won. smile.gif
