Better go fill up your cars guys, like RIGHT NOW.
Giving you fair warning, its going up at least a dollar by tomorrow.
The oil rigs were shut down, as were the texas refineries this afternoon.

I think that's a bit of an overstatement. Oil futures were actually down today, despite the forecast.

That can't be anything but price-gouging, but it is the petroleum companies we're talking about, so I shouldn't be surprised. Thanks for the heads-up.

Already filled up the tanks today.
Valero as well as other refineries are right in the path.
Even though oil almost went below $100 a barrel today, gasoline wholesale prices may spike from a mix of speculation and low supply from the refineries.

Going up by a dollar? I could be wrong, but I doubt it for most of America. Are you talking about wholesale price or retail price, as they are two very different prices. Retail prices in the gulf coast region haven't gone up much at all. However wholesale near the gulf jumped from $3.25 Wednesday to $4.75 Thursday afternoon. Cost will get passed along to the consumers, but not that rapidly and not that drastically.

...well by tomorrow afternoon, it will be 4.68 up from 3.65 at the walmart in inverness, FL. ,and we arent affected AT ALL by this hurricane. At least, thats what the attendant at walmart told the person that went there earlier today after I called them and told them to fill up like right now.
Everyone back home in NY moaned and groaned, then tanked up today after I called them as well.
This is just what I am hearing.
In the worst case, you will have a fresh tank of gas and can tell me I dont know what im talking about (again) come saturday morning. In the best case, you can thank me for giving you a heads up to fill up your tank now, and save yourself some gas pump shock, when you go to fill your tank up after payday tomorrow.
Kind of a no-lose situation, really.
My information came from someone that works for the wholesaler, and was confirmed by two people already who inquired about it. I was wondering what the manager of the station up the street from me was talking about earlier today when I stopped for my afternoon coffee when they were talking about "who gets to take the signs down tonight", which is code for "who is on-call for changing the price on the gas tonight" at gas stations, apparantly.
I know a lot of us arent made out of money, and getting gas at a lower price, especially if it really MIGHT go up that much in one rapid succession of increases, means eating lunch next week at work every day. We all need to put gas in our vehicles ANYHOW, right?
how much, and how long of a price increase really depends on how bad ike damages production at this point.

I put some gas in my tank too - the way I look at it, if the price goes up - I gave a few $$ less to the oil company, if the price stays the same - I needed gas anyway, it is not like my truck is gonna run on water...

This is a win-win situation!

I paid $3.35 last week per gallon, filled up last night and it was $3.41 gallon. The thing that stuck out was that all the lights were off as though they wanted folkis to think they were closed. This was at my local Sam's. Dunno, trying to discourage purchase or dumb ass at the light switch?

Filled up a couple of days ago. Gas had finally fallen from slightly over $4 a gallon peak to $3.39 at the wal mart gas station (Murphys). Sure am going to be pissed if it jumps back up to over $4 a gallon. Man that would stink!

down here they arent allowed to jump thier price until they take delivery of new product, unless there is a hurricane inbound, and there is gas rationing.
Im pretty sure its like that most places, as well, but just how long do you think it really takes for a gas station that has any amount of decent buiness to go through a semi tanker full of gas?
I guess we will see what the next day or so brings us.

I managed to fill up earlier today at 3.71 right as the truck was pulling out, before I left, the price had changed to 389
I asked around a little. Trust me, its going to keep going up every day somewhat quickly.

Saw some interesting stuff last night when I went to the gas station to get some beer. Three gas stations on the same strip: One gas station had regular unleaded at $3.68, which is about a dime higher than usual, the second was at $3.99, and the third was at $4.19. The third happens to be owned by some Arabs, I don't know if this has anything to do with anything, but I wouldn't be surprised.
There were people lined up at the pumps of all the gas stations, and when I went to Krystal later on, all the pumps had yellow bags over the handles. Sold the fuck out.
It sucks, but I still have a little over half a tank in my civic hatchback, so I should be alright for the next week or so.

Gas has been $3.51 for a couple weeks after a low of $3.49. It's up to $3.52 now. You could drive all the way to north Raleigh and pay $4.99. Who in their right mind wouldn't drive 10 miles to save $1.47 a gallon, especially if you need to fill up?

well, the gas I paid too much for @ 3.71 for last evening, is now 4.09 as of 9pm, when I posted this thread initially, that same gas was at 3.49
I also inquired from a local station with a chain name that I go into all the time this afternoon.
I got a surprising answer - No more tankers coming in to fill the station up until they didnt know when. So I got a pint of octane booster and dumped it in my tank.
Hopefully production will come back online quickly in the gulf area and texas.

We're now up to $3.58. Some friends came by yesterday and said a few stations had sold out of regular so I guess that makes the overall price higher if you have to be mid-grade. The lowest there is $3.69

ok...it will eventually go down again to the mid $3 level. But it will go up again. It seems like it goes up very quickly, goes down slowly but never to the same levels - rinse and repeat. In the end, we'll be paying $7, $8, $9, etc. per gallon gas - maybe not this year but one of these years nonetheless.
What is the breaking point? What do will we start to see - looting? riots? is this the catalyst for when SHTF? I mean, if you are working making $6 an hour or paycheck to paycheck - eventually the credit cards max out and you still have to eat.
Or to be hopeful, will this be a catalyst for something else - maybe someone invents some "easy button" to get 50+ mpg and it's implimented quickly to save the day. Maybe we just stop driving, get out bikes out and finally get in shape.

I honestly believe it will be the catalyst for civil unrest. Maybe not over the gas itself, but when the cost of energy hinders the availability of other necessities, you can be certain that there will be some sort of trouble.
