San Francisco 1st-graders attend teacher's lesbian wedding in 'teachable moment'

By Jill Tucker | San Francisco Chronicle

SAN FRANCISCO—A group of San Francisco first graders took an unusual field trip to City Hall on Friday to toss rose petals at their just-married lesbian teacher—putting the public school children at the center of a fierce election battle over the fate of same-sex marriage.

The 18 Creative Arts Charter School students took a public bus and walked a block at noon to toss rose petals and blow bubbles on their just-married teacher Erin Carder and her wife Kerri McCoy, giggling and squealing as they mobbed their teacher with hugs.

Mayor Gavin Newsom, a friend of a friend, officiated.

A parent came up with the idea for the field trip -- a surprise for the teacher on her wedding day.

"She's such a dedicated teacher," said the school's interim director Liz Jaroflow.

But there was a question of justifying the field trip academically. Jaroflow decided she could.

"It really is what we call a teachable moment," Jaroflow said, noting the historic significance of same-sex marriage and related civil rights issues. "I think I'm well within the parameters."

Nonetheless, the excursion offers Proposition 8 proponents fresh ammunition for their efforts to outlaw gay marriage in California, offering a real-life incident that echoes their recent television and radio ads.

"It's just utterly unreasonable that a public school field trip would be to a same-sex wedding," said Chip White, press secretary for the Yes on 8 campaign. "This is overt indoctrination of children who are too young to have an understanding of its purpose."

The trip illustrates the message promoted by the campaign in recent days, namely that unless Prop. 8 passes on Nov. 4, children will learn about gay marriage in school.

"It shows that not only can it happen, but it has already happened," White said.

California Education Code permits school districts to offer comprehensive sex education, but if they do, they have to "teach respect for marriage and committed relationships."

Parents can excuse their child from all or part of the instruction.

On Friday, McCoy and Carder, both in white, held hands on Newsom's office balcony overlooking the rotunda and recited their vows.

"With this ring, I thee WED!" Carder said, shouting the last word for emphasis.

After traditional photos, the two walked out City Hall's main doors where the students were lined up down the steps with bags of pink rose petals and bottles of bubbles hanging from their necks. McCoy, a conferences services coordinator, was in on the surprise and beamed as the children swarmed around Carder.

The two said they have participated in the campaign against Proposition 8 and planned to travel around San Francisco Friday afternoon in a motorized trolley car with a "Just Married" and "Vote No on 8" banners.

The two met on a dance floor two years ago.

"This is one girl I can honestly say deserves happiness and it came in the form of Kerri," said Carder's friend Dani Starelli.

Creative Arts administrators and parents acknowledged that the field trip might be controversial, but they didn't see the big deal. Same-sex marriage is legal, they noted.

"How many days in school are they going to remember?" asked parent Mark Lipsett. "This is a day they'll definitely remember."

Carder's students said they were happy to see their new teacher married.

"She's a really nice teacher. She's the best," said 6-year-old Chava Novogrodsky-Godt, wearing a "No on 8" button on her shirt. "I want her to have a good wedding."

Chava's mothers said they are getting married in two weeks.

The students' parents are planning to make a video with the children describing what marriage is to them.

Marriage, said 6-year-old Nolan Alexander on Friday, is "people falling in love."

It means, he added, "You stay with someone the rest of your life."

As is the case with all field trips, parents had to give their permission and could choose to opt out of the trip. Two families did. Those children spent the duration of the 90-minute field trip back at school with another first grade class, the interim director said.

"As far as I'm concerned, it's not controversial for me," Jaroflow said. "It's certainly an issue I would be willing to put my job on the line for."

That is some twisted, perverted. sick stuff to do to children. These animals should be incarcerated for child abuse and indecency. We get the government that we deserve as a whole. The number of amoral, self-seeking, ignorant people make a judgement inevitable. We will reap the whirlwind shortly imo. Sad that the good folks will suffer along with the bad. Guess we should have been more active in the past.

What they are doing is conditioning the young so that they will believe that this kind of shit is OK and "normal". Maybe the SHTF may come sooner than we all think.

These are the same people that look down at us as sick for teaching a child the basics of firearm safety.

I ask you, which would be better to know in a national emergency, how to use a firearm, or knowing how lesbians get married.

Not that I have anything against lesbians but sheesh!

The state of California is an awesome place to live. Great weather, most of the people are sane(at least people I hang with) everything is less than 6 hr drive away. That being said.

This shit drives ME FUKN CRAZY!!!! I was in San Francisco this weekend for fleetweek. Fleetweek pumps millions into the economy of SF and they tried to have the Military BANNED !!!! I don't fukn get these SF libs. This is insane!!!

The city wants to end all JROTC in the high schools. In the poor High School where their is zero positive role models, and almost no way for those who want to go to college to pay for the education.

The thing that people outside of this area need to understand is. The skweaky wheel gets the oil, execpt in San Francisco. They get in power. When a city is over run with people from all over the country who are fukn nuts to begin with. What the fuck do you think your going to end up with!!!

I live in San Jose, we used to have a "sanctuary city" policy. When Gonzalizes got the boot so did the policy. It was awesome to see (at a soccer game) all the illegal's lined up ready for arrest.

It's not all of us here in Cali.

I don't give a shit one way or another in regards to gay marriage (if they want to get married, fine, so be it, its not hurting me at all) but why all the negativity towards people that want to have pro-gay marriage.

As far as the "teachable moment", that in itself is a crock of shit but whatever.

My negativity is directed at the perverted behaviour of homosexuals and is all inclusive, from queer marriage to rump rangers to same sex anything. It is a perversion and they not only heartily approve of each others actions but try and get everyone else, starting with children in this case, to approve. If it is any consolation I am also against bestiality.

Wow...I'm all for freedom for adults to do as they please, but forcing this on children is obviously not in their best interest. They are trying to "catch 'em while they're young" in order to indoctrinate them. All they are really accomplishing is confusing them. The teacher and anyone who approved of this should be disciplined. This is NOT education, public schools suck.

In all fairness, each child needed the parents' permission, and those who's parents did not want them there could keep them away from the event.

Regardless of the fact that this was an inappropriate sort of school-sponsored event, if it was conducted outside of school setting, and not during school-time I would have no objection whatsoever.

After all, the parents allowed it, therefore I don't care. Parents can teach their kids whatever values they want. It is not my place to say they are bad parents, but school time is for learning important things. These are FIRST GRADERS and there are hundreds of more important things to learn instead of that one thing that would only confuse them at that age.

Lord help us all. If i was one of the parents who's child was taken to this event without my consent i would be suing the pants off of the school. No way no how would my child be subjected to that belief. It is a sad state of affairs we live in.

What this story is about is parental rights. If I want my kids to think that 2 men or women getting married is OK than I SHOULD HAVE THE CHOICE.
I don't like that I won't find out about what is being taught untill it's too late. When my son was in 2nd grade,he came home with a book about a kid with 2 dads. I just about went fucken nutz.

The very same school where my son was threatend with suspention. Why? Well on Monday's, the cass shares about what they did over the weekend. Our weekend was spent fishing and shooting. I guess a boy and his dad fishing and target shooting was way overboard(at least his teacher thought).

What this is about is teachers, staff, politicans, and everybody else doing what they do best. Letting you know whats best for you and your family. Obviously you not smart enough to instill proper values with your childern, so we'll tell you what "Proper values" are. By the way were gonna teach your kids weather you like it or not.

What the schools have become now are starter schools for leftist activisim. At least here in the Bay Area where I live. And College is the finishing school. The fact that, tolerence and having an open mind are embraced, as long as you follow them. I have never damaged or defaced someones vehicle because of a sticker that is on that vehicle. I will listen to all arguements with a closed mouth and an open mind, only to be called a racist and a idiot when giving a rebuttel.

The suprising thing about California is, the majority of the state is very conservitive. The problem is the 20 or so countys that are liberal, happen to be the population centers. The powers that be keep fighting redistricting so it's an uphill battle no matter what we try and do.......I need to move.

Wow, so if i came home from work, and my kid runs up to me tugging at my pants asking why 2 women are married and who's the daddy ect ect questions, i'm gonna be more then concerned, i'll be pretty fucking IRATE with a teacher who did such a thing. Its not the fact that parents let the kids go to it, what do you think the kids are gonna say when they come back to school? some kids look up to their teachers at that age, and thats not something to be taught to any child. Fuck gay marriage, fuck gays adopting kids. glad the crazies are teaching their kids the crazy ways, they'll stop reproducing

Don't hate all Californians. The crooked political districting policy in this state ensures that what the LA and San Francisco votes for, the whole state gets stuck with. Most of California is mountain, desert, and farmland full of fine conservative folks - but the fix is in on elected representatives because of crooked districting, and groups like La Raza ensuring that 5 million illegals get their vote. I noticed the same thing with Nevada; Mostly fine conservative folks, but what Las Vegas wants - the whole state is stuck with (like Harry Reed). Hell, nationally, the fix was in on our presidential candidates too.

Don't be fooled into believing that Prop 8 is about gay marriage. Gay couples already have every right that legally married couple have. Recognizing gay marriage in the California constitution is the ultimate agenda in order to;
1) legally indoctrinate students in the public school system. (plans already in place)
2) Force churches to perform gay marriages or loose their tax exempt status. (many churches will close)
3) Bring discrimination lawsuits against private individuals who do not accept the homosexual lifestyle. (religious groups, clubs, anti-gay Parental teachings)
4) Elevate the legal and civil protections of homosexuals above that of heterosexuals. (hate crime status for anything done to a homosexual)
5) Open the doorway for other perverse behaviors to become mainstream.

Homosexuality is a perversion, just like people who get off on bondage, multiple partners, suffocation, pain, dildos in the ass, or pissing on each other. As long as you keep it in your home and it isn't doing harm to anyone, you have every right in this free country to have ass sex and piss or shit on your partner as you see fit. BUT, these perversions should not be considered mainstream behavior and these lifestyles should never be pushed onto our children.

Luckily, all of these sick commie libs have screwed up San Francisco and LA so bad, that they cant even live there anymore. They are all moving to Bozeman Montana, Denver, and Jackson Wyoming so they can start over somewhere else!

I agree with Desert Dog about California. It's the assholes in the SF and LA areas who fuck it up for the rest of the state. Unfortunately they are the majority with the illegal aliens taking over the urban areas. The queers in the San Francisco area call for tolerance for their disgusting perversions but will call our teaching children normal values which include firearm safety child abuse. They also hate the military which doesn't tolerate their bullshit. This is part of what drove me out of there when they killed the economy in the early 90s.

The worst type of Stalinist tyranny is the one imposed by assholes who call themselves liberals.
