Full Version: Just a thought: Bad economy = board frustration?

I am just curious. The board has been extra-hostile for the last seven to ten days. Lots of angst and frustration. Are we all just feeling a bit mad about the economy and beaten down by an over-saturation of news about the election?

I don't know, but maybe we need to go back to something fun. What happened to the thread from several weeks, or a few months ago, in which we talked about a conversion "build off" competition? I think we should bring that back. It was a good idea that died on the vine.

Or how about more pictures of Ms. Saiga; or another thread about our pets? Or where we have travelled to, or would like to travel.

Throw out some ideas and let's move past old insults and new slights and anger. I know I get enough anger in my "real life" and I come here for fun, friends and firearms, not moodiness, madness and mayhem. So, let's lighten up.

Agreed! And I think the first thing the mods can do is to declare open, unrestricted warfare on any person who starts slinging personal profanities at any one else who happens to make a post that doesn't sit well with them. There's no reason for it, and if the mods take 'em out early, before the emotions boil over, we can avoid most of the unpleasantness altogether. Legitimate disagreement is expected; but we should be able to agree to disagree without screaming hideous insults at each other which then escalate into personal threats. There should be no place on a gun forum for people to exercise their pent up anger/frustration/desperation in the crudest of forms. Send them out of here, and on to Jerry Springer, Oprah, or The View as soon as they show their colors!

I don't know what the f*ck you tin foil hat wearing *ssh*les are talking about!!
Why don't you all just p*ss off!!!!!

Truth be told it has been rather hostile around here as of late.
And not just here.
The rhetoric we hear on television is down right mean.
We were talking at work about this same subject earlier this week.
I'm also seeing people in cars being more aggressive and people in general being less tolerant.

I think you're on to something.

Well, guys, we just need to start asking the mods to intervene as soon as we detect the first sign of someone going verbally ballistic. And, one of the best things we can do is not take them on, personally, when they start trashing up our forum with their verbal garbage. Ignore them; it's the one thing they can't stand! Most of these folks are just looking for a fight, for whatever reason, and since they get to hide behind their forum names, they say things that, I hope, they'd never say to our faces. Internet cowardice. Ignore them, notify your friendly moderator, and let's get this forum back in the control of the people who come here for answers and to share their considerable knowledge with other subscribers about our favorite firearm.

I think the mods are doing fine, I like to see trolls reveal themselves. Nothing they say will hurt this place enough to warrant much intervention. Name calling is one sign of a weak argument and I see it as a white flag.

and Will is correct also, it hasn't been just around here. it would be good to do a build off, or Modification competition, or anything but argue........

IMO, arguing is fine, as long as it's kept civil. We don't need a board full of yes men, especialy if they only agree or avoid posting to keep a few people comfortable. Critical thinking is required to come to a conclusion, part of that is trying to discern what is false and point it out. See, I just argued with you. wink.gif
rangerdavid
yeah, I guess I didn't mean argue, I meant the personal attacks, personal threats, name calling, etc................

Absolutely! The moderators are doing fine; I'd just like them to step in a little earlier, and as soon as the trash talking begins, nail it. The trolls reveal themselves quickly; I say that as soon as their cover is blown, take 'em out before they get everyone all riled up. It doesn't help any of us. We can argue for months, but we can argue like respectable people, stick to the facts, and keep the personal insults, threats and profanity out of the arguing equation. It adds no light, only heat, and nobody wins when everyone is flaming anybody who happens to disagree with them.

I certinaly agree. What I've noticed is if someone voices an opinon that is contreary to a few others then there is a piling on and their called trolls.

By definition a troll is not someone who has been on a board for years with alot of posts. Typically a troll comes on and makes just a few posts to get people riled up.

I liked Bob Ash's no drama thread.

Basic tenet in psychology/psychiatry--frustration leads to aggression.
