Assault rifle
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

The M16 assault rifle was first adopted by the US Air Force and is chambered for the small 5.56x45mm NATO round.
An assault rifle is a selective fire rifle or carbine firing ammunition with muzzle energies intermediate between those typical of pistol and high-powered rifle ammunition. Assault rifles are the standard small arms in most modern armies, having largely replaced or supplemented larger, more powerful battle rifles, such as the World War II-era M1 Garand and SVT-40. Examples of assault rifles include the AK-47, the M16 rifle, and the Steyr AUG.
Semi-automatic rifles, though confusingly classified in the USA as assault weapons by the now defunct 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, are not assault rifles as they are not selective fire. Belt-fed weapons or rifles with fixed magazines also do not meet the definition of an assault rifle.
·
Definition
The term assault rifle is a translation of the German word Sturmgewehr (literally meaning "storm rifle"), "storm" used as a verb being synonymous with assault, as in "to storm the compound". Sturmgewehr was coined by Adolf Hitler[1] to describe the Maschinenpistole 44, subsequently re-christened Sturmgewehr 44, the firearm generally considered the first true assault rifle that served to popularize the concept. The translation assault rifle gradually became the common term for similar firearms sharing the same technical definition as the StG 44. In a strict definition, a firearm must have at least the following characteristics to be considered an assault rifle:[2][3][4]
· An individual weapon with provision to fire from the shoulder.
· Capable of selective fire.
· Intermediate-power cartridge between pistol and traditional rifle.
· Ammunition is supplied from a detachable box magazine.
The term "assault rifle" is often more loosely to include other types of arms, particularly arms that fall under a strict definition of the battle rifle, or semi-automatic variant of military rifles for commercial or political reasons.
[edit] The US Army's definition of "assault rifle"
"Assault rifles are short, compact, selective-fire weapons that fire a cartridge intermediate in power between submachinegun and rifle cartridges."[5]

I gotta agree with that.

I think Twinsen means that we know what's what. Not many "sheeple" around here......I don't think so anyway laugh.gif .

But I agree, non-gun owners don't know the difference. 99.99999999% of the time when friends/family first saw some of my guns, their first question is either A) How did you get a machine gun?, or cool.gif Isn't that illegal?. But when I say "What do you think is illegal about it?", they'll say something like "I dunno, it looks like what the Army uses". 010.gif

I agree 22 shooter...

My point is that we here should do our best to educate those we know... when someone says "isnt that a machine gun" or "thats an assault rifle" we need to let them know the TRUTH!

Maybe if we all pass this around to those who dont know... maybe even just the LINK to the wikipedia page... we might get a FEW people to think " hmm... ok, thats not so bad after all!"

I think it would be great if we could get folks to understand they have been brain washed. Do I think it will occur, dunno. When words are used in a given context for long enough it becomes the new meaning in any culture. If you follow the etymology of many words you will find this to be true. For example, when I was growing up the word "gay" brought to mind thoughts of the "Gay Nineties", happy, etc. Now when anyone says "that's gay", they mean effeminate. When referring to a man, they mean a butt ranger, fudge packer, queer, pervert. See how a perfectly good word was ruined? That is due to the PC crap, "PC" used to mean personal computer and now it means politically correct. If many of us buy a new weapon they will say they bought an "assault style" weapon and we add to the problem. Hopefully Americans are smart enough to sort all this out. I must admit it is difficult to be optimistic in that regard due to recent events.

Sad to say but we have one of the worst el-hi education system in the world. This country should have been one of the top five in the world but dumb them down education has shown its success (for the DemocRATs) in the last election. These voters lacked the ability to think and fell for Obama's line; hook, line and sinker and now we'll be paying the consequences. I heard a caller to Hannity's show who said she believes the conservative line but still voted for Obama for the change he represents. Either she was lying or lacks the ability to reason. Many young voters thought that they understand what they are doing and voted for the Arab disguised as a black man.

My local liberal rag ran a story of a guy arrested for fighting with a neighbor. the story said that the guy had an outstanding warrant and that the police recovered 2 assault rifles from his house during the arrest. The assault rifles turned out to be Ruger 10/22s!!!!

The media is making everything an "assault rifle". Pretty soon they will start using the term "assault pistol" to describe magazine fed semi-auto pistols.

When people use emotion to make a decision that is when their views and values are distorted. I have been emailing people on my contact list with the video link from 1911 (above) and urging them to join a gun rights organization. I hope they will help as they are mostly gun owners as well.

I do let them know the truth. I actually discussed the phrase "assault rifle" with the fam the other day. After reading all the stories of panic-buying, in my local newspaper, I felt the need to let them know what an "assault rifle" is, and that my AK's and AR's are not it.

I hope to do some more educating this weekend. My father said he wanted to go shooting! My sister said she would go to (I've been trying to get her to go for awhile now), and she's never shot a gun before. My dad has only shot a gun once, and it was years ago, before I was even born. So hopefully I can get some educating done that way. My sister seems reluctant, but I'll bet she has fun. I just hope the weather holds for Saturday, and we actually get to go.

I have an aunt named Gaynelle who goes by Gay. She is so MAD that "Those people", as she states it, hijacked her perfect connotation name and turned it into something else altogether. Tired of the jokes for sure.

Liberals in particular are ardent manipulators of language that would make George Orwell proud. Maybe not proud but at least smug in a I told you way about his book 1984. Change the terminology to something not only less charged but actually pleasant sounding like gay. Instead of 'reverse discrimination' how about 'affirmative action'. Instead of 'illegal alien' how about 'undocumented worker'. With the violence in Mexico soon they will be labeled 'refugee' or 'asylum seekers'. Instead of 'terrorist' how about 'insurgent'. Instead of 'rifle' demonize it to 'assault weapon'. Instead of 'censorship' try 'Fairness Doctrine'. This latest one horrifies me and tickles me too. Obama wants our middle and high school students to do 50 hours of public service a year, college 100. Instead of 'slavery' or 'involuntary servitude' try 'mandatory volunteerism'. What an oxymoron.

A guy I work with asked me what kind of guns I had. I showed him what an FAL was online (my pride and joy), and explained that it fires one shot each time you pull the trigger. He said that makes it a machine gun in his eyes, and that that kind of thing should be banned. Others agreed. I didn't really know what to say.

I just figure, hey, some people need to never talk in public. Or at least not around me. They don't care what it is, they just want it banned because it's a hobby that they aren't interested in and they're democrats.

I mean, I'll explain why my guns aren't machine guns or assault weapons to anybody with a great rack and a pretty smile, but I'm not even bothering with most people. And that's the moral of the story... tits.

Many of the folks here in my community are petrified of guns. They think any handgun or rifle is an assault weapon. A couple of years ago, we had a string of carjackings that caused a panic for a while. Even with those incidents, the locals refuse to carry for self defense, or keep anything at home. I just happen to live in a major drug corridor, and every day the news are filled with reports of carjackings, home invasions, murders and so on. And with almost every single case, the bad guys get away by running to Mexico. I don't understand why the folks here think the way that they do. I always remember the line in the movie "the untouchables" where Sean Connery describes "the Chicago way" of dealing with criminals. The term "Bring enough gun" has never been as applicable anywhere as it should be in this community, but yet it is not.

Logic of terminology means nothing to these people. It does not matter that it is a battle rifle, assault rifle or a muzzleloader. To the Butthole Asshole Turd F**kers (BATF) which will become worse than during klinton, and ignorant non gun owners these are guns and guns are bad, especially ones that look "cool". Those can only be owned by the military and hollywood. BATF has reclassified these as SEMI-AUTOMATIC ASSAULT WEAPONS. A total oxymoronic description of a non exsistent firearm. It is like the gunshow loophole or an automatic standard transmission in a car. No such thing, doesn't exist. The bottom line is no 2nd amendment, except their version and no civilian gun ownership. This is the goal. Every other thing you hear them say is BS, plain and simple and if you believe their BS you are a non-thinking dumbass. Hell, president hussien isn't even in office and he is re-nigging (ha ha) on his "promises" because it don't mean shit now and he can do as he pleases.

I'm sorry you have to work with such a mental defective.

The fact that it fires only one shot, with each pull of the trigger, is exactly why it is not a machine gun.

If someone isn't into guns, knows nothing about them and has no interest in them at all, fine. To each his own. It's when someone who has those same views, but also thinks semi-auto AK's, AR's and the like, should be banned from private ownership, is when I get pissed.
