Hey I just bought my saiga a few days ago and was looking at the rear rail system that went over the dust cover. I read another thread on it and wanted some more opinions about it.

I guess since somebody ran Scott off, I'll post this from his latest post on Gunco:

Here are some pictures of the production run of some of our new Saiga products. We have a gun show this week end but I will try to get everything on the site.

first up...Our new Beryl scope rail with the quick disconnect. It is modeled after the original Polish Beryl as best that we could. We worked hard to keep it user friendly as well. There are many additional parts that are required to make this rail v/s our original rail and therefore it will cost more. The Beryl rail is [Not a sales post]

Thanks
Scott
That is the rail you should get, imho.

I use the Russian Kobra red dot on my Saiga.

It mounts on the side mounting rail.

Or you could use the SGM Rear Tactical Mount which is a lot less than the Beryl.

You don't have to remove the rear sight with the DPH rail. That way you can just remove the optic if it failed and use your iron sights, right? The SGM rail replaces the rear sight, so you don't have that option. You get what you pay for, I would go with the DPH and make up for it elsewhere.

MAA

I'd go with MAA because it's cheaper.

It works well and allows you to unscrew the stock screw and lift it up and clean.

After seeing the SGM offering, I'd highly suggest the DPH rail.

As has been mentioned previously: One gets what one pays for.
easysteve
Yeah I was looking at the SGM one and DPH. I'm new to the game so thanks for all the info. Also would you fellers perfer the side mount or rear?
Kriegerwithin
Yeah, that's the only thing I don't like about the SGM mount. But I just don't have $170 to spend on a mount, ya know?

But to answer your question,

I think of it more as a personal taste. Now I don't know if any of the more experienced members are goin to pitch a fit about this, but they do the same job so it's what kind of mount you want.

I hear ya on the money issue, I have a hard time saving for what I REALLY want but I generally find that I end up happier if I do. I don't have either type of mount, but I think some of the side mounts allow you to see the iron sights below the mount without even having to remove the mount or optics. That said, I don't know if the height of the optics on a side mount makes it harder to get a good cheek weld or not. I'm sure someone will chime in and clarify things. I don't particularly like the looks of a side mount, but that's probably less important to most people.
easysteve
hmmm.. havent got my hands on my saiga yet, but from pictures i would think the dust cover rail would look a lot better. but if the side mount is more accurate i would rather go with that.
bigj480
I think accuracy will be about the same, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to give you a definitive answer. It's all according to how well the back of those rails lock in at the tang, I bet they are pretty solid.
easysteve
I get that. Has anyone here used either the SGM or DPH ?
