My brother bought me a few hungarian 30 rnd mags. I have the majority of a can of dupli color paint that I used on the conversions. I figured it might look pretty good on the mags.

Do I need to steel wool the surface or anything like that or just clean with mineral spirits and paint away?

Thanks in advance.

#0000 Steel wool probably wouldn't be a bad idea. I have a 44year old romanian ak that i refinished with the GUN BLACK - Refinishing Kit
from blue wonder and it works great . It does not layer on like paint it absorbes into the metal like blueing does. This picture shows the difference with the mags.

Thanks for the reply..... that looks great!

This seems like a pretty good idea since it's free. I have 0000 steel wool and the paint just hope it looks good.

These are new unissued mags so it seems kinda stupid to paint em up but thought it would match the receiver and furniture better.

I am a bit troubled by the temperatures I have here. 50 day 40 night...... doesn't really give me warm enough area to paint them in. Garage stays around the 50 degree mark.

If your gonna paint them, 50 degrees is a bit cool but i dont think it will hurt to paint them out there. Being that they are unissued you will probably only have to do 1 coat and it should dry pretty fast.

Just had a thought......

I could always pre heat the garage with a kerosene heater then remove the heater and paint. I usually cover the painted stuff with a cardboard box that I have wiped the inside with mineral spirits so nothing floats onto the paint so it would stay pretty warm for a bit.

Yea that would work. paint would dry before it had a chance to cool down in there
