Well Uncle Sam was good to me this tax time, and I'm trying to decide which to get. Right now, I'm leaning towards Saiga. I like .308 a bit better, it shoots flatter, plus I'm a bit of a wuss and I've heard Romak's kick like mules. Anyone have some good input, seems like the Saiga is much more customizable and versatile.

The Saiga-308 has a lot of potential. You can turn it into the same configuration as the Romak for half the price. That's what I did. The 308 (NATO) ammo is also easier to find in bulk whereas the 7.62x54, although a military caliber, is more often old, corrosive stuff.

*EASY SOLUTION FOR YOU!!!!*

Buy a ROMAK 3 CHAMBERED IN .308 NATO! They are out there and just a few bucks more than the standard Romak 3 rifle...

If I could do it over, I would have done the SAME thing.... gotten the *LOOK* and FEEL of the R-3... and the shootability and ease of ammo of the .308!!!

By the way.... the Romak 3 doesnt kick at all... more of a gentle push... a SHARP push.. but nothing that would keep you from *WANTING* to shoot hundreds of rounds at a sitting! If I had enough to just BLOW off... I would shoot mine for HOURS on end...As a semi auto... the gas operated bolt system certainly helps to reduce FELT recoil, and the stocks have built in spring compressors at the butt plate... also helping to limit perceived recoil forces. they are COMFORTABLE to shoot, and fit the shooter very well... as long as you are a right handed shooter. Recoil is truly suprisingly less than expected. Muzzle blast and loudness, however... well... WEAR EARPLUGS!!!!!!!

I honestly cant say ENOUGH good things about mine... 'cept I wish it was .308 not 54R

I'm still thinking Saiga in .308, the Romak I was looking at would be a kit build for around $500. To get a nonkit rifle chambered in .308 would prolly get pretty pricey.

I paid $700.00 for mine in 7.62X54R..... the .308 ones were like 40 bucks more... thereabouts....

Jofus, I have some logic for you to check. this is how I see it:

the saiga is 300 bucks roughly plus there are a million different AKM parts that interchange with 80% of the rifle, but the romak 3 is about 7-800 or 500 in kit that you have to assemble, and has less parts that are commonly to be found. the romak would be a nice build, and the saiga a nice conversion to do.

the other thing you are weighing is if you WANT a non-transferrable firearm like building the romak, vs having a russian AKM in 308 that you can spice up quite a lot.

both rounds are fairly close in price in bulk surplus, but I think there is a lot more options availible for the 308 than the russian round.

the saiga is still cheaper out of the box smile.gif that would answer it right there if it were me...

The choice is not saiga/romak, The choice is saiga and 4,000 rounds / romak and no ammo.

7.62X54R rounds are cheaper than .308 rounds... I have several thousand rounds sitting here next to me for my PSL....

and ZERO .308....

( well, they havent arrived via UPS yet... sad.gif )

I have 2 Saigas in 308 and love them both. What could be better than a Saiga in 7.62x54R? Wonder if they would consider producing those.

I'm inpatient, bought a CETME and gonna set it up PSG 1 style...let the flames begin!
