I ran across a picture of my old #5 Jungle Carbine (sold), and now I've got a bug for another project. The idea is to buy a good functional #4 mk1 .303 or Ishapore .308, nothing with any historic value, and pretty much have my way with it. Just something bolt action that's different to shoot for some project time. Right now I'm trying to learn some things first as the only thing I rember about the old gun is that it was an average shooter and kicked like a mule. I like the idea of the .308, but the Ishapore is based on a #1 and I like the style of the #4 better. Does anyone know if the .308 was ever produced on a #4 platform? Would it be fair to say that the .308 would typically be more accurate than the .303? What's a quality/effective muzzle brake for a 30 cal rifle (any style, retrofit job in the end).
Does anyone know good forum's to research on for the Enfield, or maybe C&R? Most of my searches haven't proven to be very informative-makes me appreciate this forum, for Saiga based guns even more.

Hey Mark check out this link.
http://www.leeenfieldrifleassociation.org....Enfield%20LinksThere is a link to an Enfield forum there and lots of informative links.
My .303 MKIII has a surprisingly low recoil with the new ATI stock I put on it. It has the smoothest action of any bolt gun I've used and is a pleasure to shoot. Untill you have to shell out for more ammo that is...
Even the surplus stuff I'm getting at gunshows is more than 50 cents a shot

http://www.websitetoolbox.com/tool/mb/surp...ifle?forum=4877If you have a dunhams near you, sometimes you can find a nice no.4 mk.1 there. Thats where i got mine, a 1943 Maltby, wood is rough (will be replaced anyway) but the bore is an absolute mirror, nice deep grooves, the damn thing is more accurate than I am.

Your might want to look into a Pattern 14 (303) or Pattern 17 (30-06) Enfield and use it as a base to recreate a Remington 720 which was a beautiful rifle made in 1940 to 1941. Very few made it to the civilian market as they were bought up by the Navy at the outbreak of WWII. The P14 and P17 actions are very strong and have been used by custom rifle makers for years.

You can find some good info at www.surplusrifle.com Just click on the No5 MK 1 on the left side of the site. Also great for almost any surplus military rifle. LOL

Thanks gang, keep'm coming if you think of any more. Great sites and info-none of which came up on any of my searches. I've been systematicly hitting pawn and gun shops in my area and the damn things are everywhere. The actions on both have been very smooth, but from an ammo standpoint, I can't help but think .308, on the other hand I like the looks of the #4 .303 a lot better for what I have in mind.
Cobra, damn son, we go in opposite dirrections every time. Mustang/Camaro, Saiga 12 w/ wood/Saiga 12 with AK74 plastics, and now Enfield w/ composite stock and I'm wanting to go traditional wood (Jungle Carbine style). Bottom line is screwing with stuff is always fun...........
Thanks again guys, Mark
Edit- Scored.....found a VGC Ishapore .308 for $120. let the project begin.

I hear ya man
Mine feels like it lost a couple of pounds off the front end now. Much nicer to shoot. The jungle carbines are nice and they arent so front heavy. There were a couple down at my local pawn shop last time I was in there. I was tempted.

Anyone know where I can get a wood Monte Carlo butt sock like the one pictured.... BRG is booked up, and my only other source right now has me backordered for up to 12 weeks. Going with a AK74 style brake, wood set like the one pictured, some trigger work, scope only set up (removed rear sight), and going to mix a 60/40 satin black/gloss black Molly resin. It's all in the white now waiting for stuff to start showing up and have to get a 14mmLH barrel tat kit to thread the barrel.
