I don't know for sure, but during these times. I would mail the magazine to myself.
I have often wondered if you could just bring them back or if you could just mail them or what. I'd love to know this too if someone knows.
you could always say you had it with you when you left the country.
Yea and they would reply "Prove it...."
Decisions decisions.....
So I guess no one has had first hand experience?

Does anyone happen to know whether or not it's OK (legal) to bring in a rifle magazine from overseas via checked bags?
I was able to purchase a S20 8-round mag on the cheap but I'm wondering if it's possible to bring it back without too much hassle?
Thanks!

To me they look like great prices on all three.
Ive seen the WASR at Dunham's. Ive had the opertunity to shoot it at the range. Its a good little Romanian AK. Worth the investment for someone willing to put a little work into it.
Cabela's sells a WASR that has a slant break and high cap mag. The wood is dark stained and polished up nicely. You can also get it in synthetic with a folder. The package comes complete with leather sling for $699.99
I dont know how many people are buying them at that price, but everytime I go to Cabelas, there are different ones on display.
Just think, you could buy a WASR, spend another $100 and a weekend fixing it up, and sell it for 3 times what you got into it.
I paid $89.00 for my first 59/66. I know they have come up in price a bit, but they are always a good, fun rifle. $110 is not bad at all for such a great rifle. They are alot of fun to slap aftermarket parts on and use the same round as your AKs.
Mausers are the shizzle! A great, accurate and powerful rifle loaded with history and respect. Aftermarket parts are easy and cheap to come by and they look good polished up in thier original configuration. Rounds are common and made by several manufacturers. They are legal to hunt with and alot of fun at the target range. I think we should all have one!
Since tommorow is the last day, I think I'll drop by again. I looked at one SKS really quick and sights (on the end of the barrel) was bent/smashed. Will definitly make me inspect the others a bit more.
I still would like to know what I'd need to do to the WASR to convert it to hi-cap mags. Just a simple mod or what?

It's a danger to your family. I suggest you not open it, but instead take it to the post office and mail it to me for proper disposal.

Ok, PM me your name, address, SS number, and mother's maiden name
I am going to try to get myself another one or two first, then a couple more ppl for here. I just goto be patient

Got hooked up with a S20 8-rounder for cheap. Gonna try to get another couple. 10-rounds seem to be impossible to find.

Rogi,
I use Wolf but I recall reading that Dodge did some testing and found Barnaul to be more accurate or reliable. The problem is trying to find Barnaul in bulk. Wolf is easy to come by, is pretty accurate and priced right.
I have purchased Wolf from Sportsman Guide based on price and Cabellas based on price and the neat ammo boxes that come with each 500 rounds of 7.62.

Hope this helps.
Wolverine
Sportsman's is a bit cheaper, but those storage boxes sure come in handy.

i've never been to the freeport one. you ought to give me a call sometime.

Should go shooting some time But I'm on break till end of August (outta Pittsburgh).

yeah man, watch out for the corrisive stuff. Wolf is just about all i use and its great...cheap too. Ive also had good experience with silver bear and barnaul. Like vjor said, get what ever is at a good price
Yea Wolf works for me. I guess I should rephrase the question....what ammo out there shouldnt be used in Saigas?

Howdy....
This has probably been asked already, but what are you guys shooting through your 7.62's? Sadly, after the 7.62 I bought a S20, then did the conversions and only had time to put like 20 rounds through the 7.62. The 20 rounds were Golden Tiger I got from a local gun show for $2/box of 20. I have have 100 rounds left over.
I've heard good and bad about Silver Bear. Mostly good about Wolf. Can you guys recommend something? I wanna start stocking up slowing instead of buying 100-200 rounds at a time.
Same question for the S20. For now I've put a box of Winchester AA. After another box or two, I'll probably use regular Winchester (it's pretty cheap at Walmart...IIRC 100 for $16).
Thanks.

i was in the bridgeville dunhams today, they have 1 s20 left, $225.

That aint bad. I got mine from the Freeport one for $175 + tax. Good to see them stocking some, even if its a few.

pat
Dang gonna have to check that out. Thanks....
edit: Freeport only has a 7.62; me too lazy to call others

Thanks guys......goto find some time to clean and repaint the rifles and the 30 rounder mags. Think I'm gonna go with good old Rustoleum since I have a 1 pint can in the basement.

Need a better background
Well I finally got around to doing the conversions this Saturday with my buddies help. Almost nothing unexpected happened.
Just got a few pics and questions. Did a 7.62 and a 20 gauge. The first one went ok, we went slowly. Followed the write up text. A drill press, good punches, and a cobolt mill bit helped alot expect we killed the bit after the two rivets and the weld (the really hard one). After taking the trigger guard and plate off, we saw that square hole for the trigger and grip were already drilled...awesome! got to skip another step.
I started reassembly and this turned out to be the hardest part because we didnt know which of the old parts when in. The blackjacked was great once we figured out its purpose, so we tossed the e-clips I bought. The rivets look-alikes were great too, fit like a glove. We decided to weld the old trigger guard under pressure next to the trigger nut and didnt use a nut/bolt to hold the other end (hard to explain I know). The second conversion so a bit easier, but we were in more of a hurry. Best advice is to take your time. I think we did the second one in almost under an hour including reassembly.
Also, I bought double hook trigger group (single was out), but I didnt do any modification...no grinding, no notches. Did I get lucky or something? I coulda sworn I would have to mod if somehow.
Questions:
-Best way and paint to repaint the bare areas on the rifle?
-Best way to get the metal fillings out without killing the finish?

Can hook YOU up or can hook ALL OF US up?
Depends on what the TSA says. If I goto mail them back it will be slow going (1 or 2 at a time) assuming I can find some.
-
What if it's declared......or taken apart so it's just a piece of plastic.
I guess mailing back is always an option. A friend in St .Petersburg could hook me up....
-
Hey guys, whats the story with brining mags from overseas? Say your on a trip to Russia and pick up a few S12 or S20 mags.
Q: Can these brought back?
-If yes, do they have to be declared?
-If not, can they be mailed back?
I was told that they cant be brought or mailed back, but how does this Russian guy sell them then.
-
Check out this link http://www.rkengineeringco.com/eclip.htm
Lowe's and Home Depot have them in their pieces and parts drawers in the fastener section. You'll need the 7/32 ones. It wouldn't hurt to get 2 packs of 2 in case one goes flying. I didn't lose one but came close.

Thanks....

Roqi... read the edited post, please... I changed a little since you posted...
Ahh just saw that......what the hell is an e-clip?
Any pics and where do I get them? Doing the conv. next weekend......my buddy decided to get a drill press and some milling stuff so we pushed it back a week.

Hey guys....question for ya'lll.......
If I happen to goto Russia and pick up a few S12, S20 mags can I bring them over on the plane (check-in of course) without any problems? If not, can I mail them to an address in the US?

Hi guys,
quick question for you guys. I was reading up on the conversion write-up and came up to this part:
http://www.cross-conn.com/Saiga_Conversion/Step_7.htm
10. There are two things left to do, one of which is very necessary. The necessary thing is to figure out a way to prevent the hammer and trigger axles from backing out of the receiver, and the other thing is to fill in the holes that are left from the sporter configuration. Fortunately, I found a way that addresses both at the same time. I do this with a type of fastener called a binding post, also known as a Chicago post or screw post. Binding posts are used to bind large loose leaf documents. They come in various lengths, so I bought a couple that were slightly longer than what I needed and trimmed about 1/16 inch off the threaded end. Basically, binding posts are a threaded tube with a head on one end with a matching bolt that screws into the tube.So do these plastic rivets do the trick?
-
Measure from the point of where the stock fits in the receiver to the end. A US length will be 10 1/2 to 11 inches. A commi block stock is 9 1/4 to 9 1/2.
I'm assumming you're going to conv to pg. Remember your moving the trigger forward by at least 2".
Ok....sounds about right then. Looking at it, didn't look "right" next to the Saiga stock.
Saiga magazine through US Customs?
