I swore off buying .308 for a long time just based on availability and resultant price.  I won't pay $1.00 + a round.  The same goes for 5.56.  Prices for .223 / 5.56 have returned to planet earth.  Not so much for .308.

Aimsurplus and SGammo had WPA .308 for around $8.80 a box. That is .44 cents a round. Still a little high, but this is the first time it was in stock in almost a year.

Also, both Aimsurplus and SGammo have had brass cased PPU for around $11.50. Depending on the firearm used to fire it, you could sell the brass to a reloader and recover some of the cost.

I'm not buying steel jacketed ammo anymore. With the cost of rifles you can't come out ahead. (other than 7.62x39).

I run the .308 through two M1A's.  Those take NATO compliant rounds rather than the hotter .308 hunting/commercial rounds.

  2. I'm just fucked in the head to be honest, I know it. I raise a lot of eyebrows. I've seen things, done things, lived through things that have put a particular twist on the functioning on my noggin.   I see things and do things in a different manner. I hear crazy, fucked up and insane on a regular basis. One of my more endearing qualities.

    akastormi,

That might be an issue in purchasing firearms or even ammo these days.  021.gif

    PS....the haircut gave you away.

More jobs going to a right to work for less state.....

What is implicit in the phrase 'right to work for less?' Well, the opposite of that phrase is 'the absence of a right to work for less' , the absence of a choice. Given the option, I will take the existence of a right over the absence of a right every time. I prefer freedom. The word 'less' introduces the concept of some arbitrary number, at which point one worker would be working for 'less' and another would be working for a proper wage. Who among us should we appoint to set that number? I will take my odds as an individual earning what my productiveness merits, without the influence of government force. Who benefits in a system like that? And who is injured? The least productive is benefited, at the cost of the most productive. What you get is an average, trending down, while through extortion and threat the pay keeps rising. At the cost of who? The unions and the politicians are fused at the hip, and what they specialize in is coercion and manipulation in the marketplace. You want to see jobs ship over seas? Have the president use his pen to nationalize forced unionization in every state.

And what you get in the end is Detroit.  You cannot artificially sustain inflated labor rates that exceed actual market forces without consequences.  I have experienced the accelerated life cycle of several manufacturing plants because of labor rates that were extracted through strike avoidance by both parties.  What do you think happened to the Big Three in the North?

  4. OK.. I was a severe ADHD child, and some of the weird parts of it carried over into my adult life. One of those things is an almost photographic memory for a lot of things, especially people's faces and names. I've had numerous people tell me this over the years, including strangers who were "victims" of this. About a year ago my wife pointed it out, before I'd ever complained about it to her, so now I see that it's probably true.

Apparently I creep people out because, most of the time, if I meet a person once, I remember their face and name, and most of the even small details that they share about themselves. Maybe not everything, but apparently way more than a "normal" person would remember about a stranger, or someone they only shared a few conversations with, etc. Even if we met and chatted once, and they don't remember me at all.

Now that I know about it, I sort of catching myself "pretending not to remember" names or details if I'm only meeting them the second/third time, or just have a casual relationship with them.

Anyone do something that creeps or freaks out people, or am I all alone here - maybe even "that guy"

The memory of faces, names and details would be great for (detective) investigative work and in business for cultivating relationships, contacts prospects, etc.  I try to capitalize on my idiosyncrasies and gifts.  I wish I could do what you can.

Thanks! Got 1 box of .22's from Cabelas, plus 1 box each of some other .223's I want to try out in my new AR pistol (one is a 40gr. varmint bullet, I think it will do well with the 1:9 twist.)

.22 backordered till July, one of the .233 loads backordered till March. argh

I just got the email from Cabelas.  That sucks.  I didn't know Cabelas played the Sportsman's Guide game on back ordering.  I was under the impression if they were selling it it was on the shelf ready to go.  Bummer!

    The email content:

Thank you for your recent order. We appreciate your shopping at Cabela's and hope that you had an enjoyable shopping experience.

It's classic.  I rarely score the super deals.  I generally catch pretty good prices but not rock bottom.  I think it is just a matter of timing of when I want or need ammo and where prices are hovering......or maybe it's dumb luck or I'm not the best shopper.  I'm also willing to pay a little more for quality ammo.  I am thinking of buying a RRA AR.  I won't run steel "brass" through it.  Now a Saiga......all day long.

I did have to pay 6% MI tax as we have a Cabelas in /Grand Rapids.......way on the other side of town.  I couldn't drive there for $5 and I'd still have to pay tax.

  8. Yes, they are great for so many reason's.  TV, showering, good, in-expensive food, I guess internet by now, but can't confirm that as their was no wi-fi when I was in.  Made many of free 'home phone calls' from the USO's, back when there was no Cell Phones or Texting (walls line with phone booths).  Made one very homesick and confused young man very happy.  Not to mention my friends as well.  The USO is indeed a worthy cause.

Side Note:  How goes it with your Marine Wolverine?  My best friend (which was one of my best NCO's in the Corps) will be deploying on his 5TH combat tour (two Iraq, 3 Afghan).  I am so freak'n pissed about that.  Regardless he will be fine.

My son is doing great.  He just returned to San Diego for combat training following a 10 day leave and 7 days of Recruiter's Assistant duty.  When he finishes in San Diego he will be going for MOS training in Pensacola for 90 days There are two more training phases for his MOS after this before moving on to his first assignment.  His work will be classified.  He is happy and that is all I can ask.  I think his choice of the Corp was a good one over $100,000 in college costs followed by a non-existent job.  Besides, Uncle Sam will help with his educational costs as he develops.

I'm sorry to hear about your friends deployment.  Iraq and Afghanistan are tragedies.  What a waste in lives, blood and treasure.  Those people do not deserve our help.  They will always live in the dark ages.  I hope your friend escapes unscathed physically and emotionally.

  9.

But I can say that I have spent many of wonderful hours in USO's that without really would have made a bad situation worse. I have and always will be thankful for them.

That's good news. That is exactly what I want to hear. Thanks for your service and I'm glad they could help you out. I'll be a lifelong donor.

That is good news.  I have one in the MC now with new friends from MI and San Diego.  He has plenty of time to enjoy the USO.  He last used it to change his clothes before reporting in for combat training.

We donate to the VFW through work, and you'd be amazed how few people at a DEFENSE CONTRACTOR donate. Most of the assembly personnel are naturalized, from Asia (mostly Vietnam) not born citizens. You'd think they of all people would be grateful for the freedom that was paid for in American blood.

As you probably guessed by my nom de plume, this really PISSES ME OFF! A lot of them are going "home" to Asia to retire. No loyalty at all.

You aren't kidding. That is one of the biggest reasons why I left DOD and DISA.  What a freak'n joke.  It was like being in Vietnam.  Hooking each other up with jobs, which is suppose to be illegal, it's done all the time.  I really don't care what you are, but I do care about what you know. and you damn well better speak English. None of those two statements applied.  I just couldn't deal with the broken English, the incompetency and the thought of them retiring on the Tax Payer dollars back to Vietnam to be 'Numba Wun Big Cool Man'.  Vietnamese aren't the only ones trust me, but they have a HUGE click in DOD.

The USO is a pretty good org. for service members. A word of caution though, there are other "service" organazations that are little better than theives in my book. Red Cross is one along with the wounded warrior project. The wwp takes a 60 percent cut for adminastrative purposes. The 40 percent that they disburse to help vets goes to organizations that does the same, so very little of donations make it to the vets. Any tax exempt orginization must disclose publicy the amount of each donation that actually reaches the intended party. Please check out the organization before donating

Blackknight, you are spot on.  We use to be pushed all of the time to support things like the Red Cross, Navy Relief Society, etc, until I learned about how much of the money actually goes to the cause.  I quit preaching it and was called on the carpet for it more then once.  When I was a Corporal in Hawaii, my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer.  I sure as hell didn't have the money for a plane ticket then, so I went to the Navy Relief Society for help.  Basically told to pound sound.  What a joke.  Then the CEO and others were found guilty of theft, along with their huge mansions and yacht's.  Oh yeah, I am careful.  But I can say that I have spent many of wonderful hours in USO's that without really would have made a bad situation worse. I have and always will be thankful for them.

I do the same before contributing to "Christian" organizations such as World Vision.
