  1. This is one of those subjects that has been beat to death over the last few years on arfcom.

As far as stripped AR15 recievers go, I've seen more than one letter from the Tech branch stating that a stripped reciever becomes what ever it is first built into regardless of what the reciever has on the side of it. Although this was a couple of years ago. If it's built into a pistol initially, then that is what it has become. And a pistol can be converted into a rifle by attaching a rifle length barrel and then a buttstock. It can be converted back to a pistol at any time.

If the reciever originally was assembled with a buttstock it then became a rifle reciever and would not be legal to then convert to a pistol configuration.

If I remeber correctly, those letters were signed by Sterling Nixon, top dog of the tech branch.

PS I know who, and how this BS about those recievers being marked as pistol was started. It originally was the big idea of some arfcomers to order some recievers and have them custom engraved with "pistol" on the side to save being hassled by Barney Fife at the range. It was not because it was required by law. Then the company that did the work started to make them a regular offering. As a result, everyone started the rumor that the reciever has to be marked as "pistol"ect... Maybe the BATF decided it was a good idea too...

A commercial gun manufacturer when asked by the Feds they legally have to

report the serial number and whether the gun is a long gun/hand gun.

Depending on its designation they go by that. If you custom make an

Global trades used to ask if you want it reported as pistol or rifle.

I know this from personal experience. Once they report it, its a done deal.

If you make your own homemade gun, well then, the ATF falls back to the

buttstock insertion rule, same goes with an AOW. The TC case in the Supreme

Court only argued whether a kit was a constructive violation. As of now, pistol

to rifle is ok, but you can not just make it a pistol again. Mech Tech is selling

carbine kits without briefing customers on the whole legal thing. They will not

get in trouble, but you can if you convert back to a pistol.

  2. a pistol can always be made into a full length legal rifle and converted back, this is why

    Sorry Bro thats not true.

    see file below

Where's the rest of the letter?

Once a buttstock is attached, it can't become a pistol unless a tax stamp

    or proper licencing applies.

    Maybe so.

Maybe next week, the revenuers'll send out another letter contradicting this one.

The ATF does not make law. They interpret it, and judging from their track record, they interpret it differently just about every time they're asked.

Vultite had it right. To the ATF, the manufacturer serial number and long gun/ handgun

designation is what determines whether it is a long gun or hand gun. The FFL

background check(yellow form) does not make that determination. If the ATF calls a manufacturer to check the serial number and type of gun, that determines the

    designation.

  3. I'm glad the extension is working out for you. This looks like something I'll be making a few more of, after the dust settle from the bama specials......LOL.......if I survive huntin season myself, wifey is gettin a little testy at the moment, me showing up for 4 or 5 hrs at home each day with a load of guns to ship an no deer meat is pluckin her nerves...................... .....but after all these years, long as I still stink of cuttin oil an got jerky on my breath, instead of smellin of booze an broads, she should be ok with it........ :smoke:

That could come in handy. How much for these?

  4. I'm considering sending my wifes new 410 to gunsmoke for a conversion to put any of these myths to bed....

No one has even done business with these folks since they signed on....

Just a bunch of smack talk from over two years ago...

    Give them a chance, people.....

Truth like cream rises to the top......

I'm sure everyone will feel the same about inviting back Alliance Armament

in 2 years when things might have become different with how they do business.

I have heard a bunch of smack about them too I guess you can't trust anybody's

    experiences anymore.

  5. Hmm....... Very strange and sad story... Since it has been over 2.5 years form the initial post in this thread, maybe there is a chance that everything changed for the better - lets just wait and see - please, give the guys a chance...

That thread might seem strange because it is a part two of an earlier thread.

    http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?showto...amp;hl=gunsmoke

In the earlier thread of Feb 11 2006, the initial post was about myself

calling CW at gunsmoke and asking him about his inventory of Saiga 12s

that I was in the process of trying to order one from him. Tony Rumore

had just began to warn about the barrel length problem on the new imports

and I called gunsmoke about my concern. CW refused to check while I was

on the phone with him and argued that this was some kind of BS rumor,

implied I was lying about this issue, and argued that 16inch shotgun barrels

    are the legal limit.

    quote from my original thread

Called him because i had ordered a Saiga 12 from him.

Told him that he needed to check his Saiga 12s to make sure he doesnt sell off any that are less than 18 inches. The dickhead says the literature says they are 19 inches and that this is all a liberal scheme to stop sales. I said please dont take my word for it measure a few. He refused and said he knows best.

Told the dickhead, his order to me is going back and his arrogance will be mentioned on the internet.

    What an asshole.

By the way, the owner of gunsmoke argued that 16inch shotgun barrels are legal installed. It hard to believe a fucking dealer doesnt fucking know a simple NFA rule about shotgun barrels needing to be 18 inches.

The owner of Gunsmoke also had the nerve to say " And even if Im right about his need to check his barrrels, what the hell would he do for all of the ones hes already sold".

So he doesnt care about his customers. Its all about the $ to him.

He acted like this in two separate events by nearly a month apart, and in the end

he knew I was right about the first call and refused to apologize and proceeded to

cuss me out over the phone. No apology ever came. Forget apology, hes been in

the gun business for along time and told me a shotgun barrel length limit is 16 inches

that is way wrong. Then his ethics about if I am right what the hell he would do

for all the ones he already sold. The guy is an idiot with bad ethics and a horribly closed

mind. I have never had such a bad experience buying anything in comparison

to what occurred with CW. His business relations might have got better, but

I will not attempt to find out. 152dbs sorry but your boss burned his bridge

with someone that was trying to help him at one time. Its not that I think less

of any of his employees. Please do not let my experiences and the fact that

this occurred nearly 3 years ago prevent anyone from trying to do business

with Gunsmoke. Things might have changed by now.

  6. I do not currently own a .308 Saiga and I have not had the chance to

inspect one up close, but from looking at pictures of conversions it

appears to me that some of the conversions make use of a regular

ak trigger guard that is normally used on a 7.62x39 version.

If this is the case, will a saiga tech .308 trigger guard also fit on a x39

saiga? If the rivet holes are spaced the same on both versions

it should work, but maybe someone with both types can confirm

    one way or another.

    Dscf1382.jpg

  7. How bad is the damage? Is part of the trigger guard cut off or cut through partially? If its just nicked, I would sand it a bit, repaint it, and reuse it. If it is really mangled, you could fabricate a new one or buy a replacement AK trigger guard/mag catch. They sell a screw plate that allows you to screw the assembly down rather than having to rivet it.

Theres a rip through the leg that was facing forward. I used to much torque

to disattach the factory guard from the plate it was welded to.

I have an extra replacement ak guard off of a military demil but prefer

to use the factory mag catch base. Who sells a screw plate?

  8. I started to convert a x39 saiga and accidently ripped one of the trigger

guard legs that touch the receiver. What is a good option if I want to

leave the factory mag catch alone? Welding is not an option.

I figure I need a replacement guard kind of like the tromix weld on

ones but without needing to weld.

  9. So i made a purchase of 2 surefire saiga mags for my X39 gun, and i get the USPS track and confirm deal, so i check on it today and it showed that its leaving mexico? i thought they were based in MS? i'm getting worried now, anyone else have their mags come from mexico?

Metal surefire mags as in surplus mags modified in Mexico interesting.

  10. Silver solder is probably the way to go if you are doing it yourself unless you are a fantastic welder. Brownell's makes a silver solder paste that a one part deal. Just apply to parts, heat up and go. Plus, the solder is less permanent t than welding. Use ammonia or baking soda + water to neutralize the flux, rinse well.

Once the choke is set in place and cooling from the soldering process,

your not going to be able to efficiently flush any kind of flux residue

from the threads. A professional gunsmith with 30 years of experience

silver soldered a choke in place on a shotgun he was selling me. A year

later I saw major pitting and chipping in the bore right where the muzzle

contacts the choke. This has never occured on any other shotgun I own

with chokes, but they have never been silver soldered. I remember

Tony Rumore a while back commenting about the corrosiveness of

    silver solder.

  11. I am getting ready to put my Polychoke on and I want opinions on welding, and on silver solder (the 1200 degree silver solder) for permanently attaching the base of the choke to the barrel.

    Pros and cons of each?

I'm fairly certain that silver solder requies the use of flux.

The issue with flux is that different fluxes have sodium, potassium, chlorine,

and fluorine in them. The metal and nonmetal combination we know as salts

will hold moisture on the surface of the steel. Fe + H2O = FeO + H2 Iron plus

water=rust plus hydrogen gas Your muzzle area will slowly corrode and chip

away as you fire the gun. Tig welding is a much better option with no ill effects.

  12. Looked at some at the GS in Ft worth ..........looked like all those I've seen before. Maybe u have the latest "new and improved!"

What parts are different in your view?

The spring rod looks different for sure.......ans the finish looks more of a parker, rather than painted. Thats just what I see from you pic. That pics of the whole weapon.

Dimpled or not? Are the holes for the AK fire control group stamped inside?

The recoil rod is wires instead of one piece. I checked it is paint.

I'm not sure what you mean by holes stamped inside.
