  1. Thanks for all the replies, alot of great info. I'm definitely leaning towards the.308 now. I guess what I'm really looking for is more of a dual purpose rifle. A CQB rifle,(a less expensive version of an HK-G3/FN-FAL) and also something with the potential to really reach out and touch something. It's always nice to have that kind of versatility at your disposal.

  2. Which of these guns is the most accurate and flattest shooting at longer ranges ? I'm wanting another Saiga,(already have a 7.62x39) and am trying to decide which one to go with. I'm kind of leaning toward the .308 (16")because I figure it wins in the range department.(although from what I understand the 5.45 is no slouch either) BTW, I'm not interested in 5.56 in an AK.

    Thanks in advance.

  3. Cool video. Man,that's one fire breathin' SOB. :super: The recoil didn't look bad at all,and you didn't even have a muzzle brake on it.

I don't think there was any real danger in how you did the video. You never actually stepped in front of the muzzle, and like someone already mentioned, what's the gun going to do, fire on its own ? The only thing is the camera might get tagged with a few spent casings. :lolol:

  4. I have been trying in vain to find a set of black RPK-74 HG's for my Saiga 308. Who knows when/if Kvar will get more. Looking at the new RPK-style HG, it seems like it might fit, I just don't know if the tab that slips into the receiver under the front trunnion extends far enough and is shaped correctly. Anyone happen to know?

If it does fit, I think I might pick one up and then shave the top portion that extends to the gas tube so I could run a standard AK gas tube with plastic hg.

I just looked on the K-VAR website where the RPK HG's are listed and toward the top of the page under "Handguards (Lower)", it says they "Will NOT fit .308 Rifles". I guess that means all the HG's listed on that page.

    Oops,nevermind. I was looking at the AK-74 style HG's.

  5. I'm going to begin the conversion of my S-12 within the next week or so and am also going to refinish the entire receiver and barrel with a bake-on finish while I'm at it. I'm going to need to heat it to about 200 degrees.

My question is are the stock sights and the mag release lever made of plastic or metal and can they withstand that much heat ? (don't want them melting on me if they're plastic) Are there any other parts that I need to be careful with around high heat ? Obviously,I'm going to remove all the furniture first,so that's not a concern.

    Thanks in advance.

  6. I am a new owner and am on a learning curve so please forgive my question if it is a no-brainier! My S12 has the Pistol Grip mod and does not have a bolt lock installed. It has the slot in it but no lock mechanism. When I asked the shop owner that sold me my S12 he stated you lose that option when modified, and no one makes a lock to fit after the PG modification. Fact or Fiction? If fiction were can I get the parts to rectify the lack of a bolt lock?

Fiction. CSS (Carolina Shooters Supply) has them. They can be tricky to put in if you've never done it before. A pair of long handle needle nose pliers definitely comes in handy.

  7. Sumsky, I am really liking that link you sent me. I'm thinking I will go with that brand of moly. Would you guys consider the factory finish on the saiga 12 to be semi gloss or mat??

Have you considered Alumahyde II from Brownell's. I'm thinking of refinishing my S-12 with that. The S-12 factory finish looks like more of a matte to me.

  8. I just got my Saiga 12 a few days ago. I noticed that the factory finish is very basic and tends to scratch rather easily. I was sorta concerned about possible rust in the exposed areas. I was thinking of refinishing it with some Alumahyde II (matte black) to give it an extra layer of protection. I've heard its pretty good stuff, only downside is the looooong curing time.(2 weeks I think) Thoughts ?

  9. The only Fiocchi I've used was bird-shot loads. My weapon did NOT, I repeat did NOT, cycle them well. Just so you know it's not the weapon, I've used cheap-ass Rio bird shot in this thing with no problems...

It would help if we knew of any mods performed on your weapon though...

I have not done any mods to my S-12. It's brand new,I've only had it a few days.

  10. I'm thinking of converting my S-12. I want to put a traditional type fixed buttstock on it, like the ones from K-VAR. I'm trying to get a consensus as to which length you guys prefer, Warsaw or Nato.

I have a Warsaw on my Saiga rifle and like it quite a bit,so I was kind of leaning in that direction. Though with the increased recoil of the S-12,I figured maybe the slightly longer Nato might be the way to go.

What do you guys think ? Thanks in advance.

  11. Hey all. I just picked up a new Saiga 12 (IZ-109) today. I got it home and field stripped it to wipe off the cosmoline and to put a couple drops of oil on the rails. I noticed whenever I reassembled it, that there is some back and forth play with the dust cover. It's not really loose because of the tension of the recoil spring, but it doesn't go all the way forward into the notch behind the rear sight post.

I also have a Saiga rifle, but its dust cover does not do this. There is no play whatsoever, it fits very tight and stays all the way forward.

Is this normal with the Saiga 12, or is it something I should be concerned about ? Is this something that would be covered under warranty ? Maybe they could send me another dust cover, hopefully one that fits better. I just don't want it backing out of the notch and flying off while I'm shooting.

    Thanks in advance.
