  1. I did one on mine minus the sidefolder. It's something I'd love to have but the expense isn't worth it for me. I used bulgy ak74 parts and am happy with the way it came out. I also did not use a press even though I had one available, a heavy rubber mallet worked and cutting the saiga ones off worked for me.

I am not happy with my painting though. So I am currently looking for someone that does duracoat locally

I think the easiest way to get it all aligned is to run string from center of stock, trough the rear sight notch and use that to get your fsb lined up(picture below). The gasblock rear pin will go into the existing saiga notch. So if you drive your pin square you should be all square with that(as long as your factory saiga gasblock wasn't canted) I only drilled and installed one pin in my fsb then sighted it in, and drilled and drove the other pin.

I also bored out my brake this bigdefbeec4.jpg

Probably not necessary but mine wiggled onthe threads quite a pit. And the last thing I want is bullet strikes.

  2. ...If the Mini 30 cost about $200 less or took AK mags the choice between the two would get harder.

I disagree. I can't think of a Ruger anything that could be accurately considered a battle rifle, (and no, I'm not forgetting about their AR).

Your previous post satirizing a Ruger forum was dead on. Rugers are generally servicable, but don't really excel in any particular way. Most of their models are just... sleep.png

That said, the 10/22 is fun, and everyone should have one.

Ruger is most definitely the king of plink. Their 10/22s, 22/45,s ,mark series and new sr22 are great guns(my sr22 is one of the most relaible rimfires I have)

But,like you said, when it comes to production of a combat ready rifle, ruger falls short, especially considering prices.

  3. This forum used to be about folks helping folks.

But now it seems to be just nonsensical sarcasm and bullshit from people who havnt even torn apart their rifles and have tainted firearm knowledge.

PS -not directed at Gary's awesome use of emoticons

I see the same thing hutch.

Dyno, You could do some research on the fuckin web. We all ask our questions that may be dumb to others. Thats all cool, but for goodness sakes be humble. You have what, like 39 posts? Listen to what some of these guys have to say, you may learn something.

If we still had the 'thumbs down' feature on this forum, you would be drummed out like a white guy at a black panthers rally. Im not just talkin about this thread either.

    Don't sugar coat it.

I do agree that these "which is better, chocolate or vanilla" threads seem to go nowhere, but I am drawn to them like a moth to a car wreck.

FYI its YOUR sarcasm and nonsensical bullshit I speak of.

Was that whole fake ruger forum rant necessary and did it contribute anything to the thread? No.

You're a troll. End of story. And it will get you banned

  4. Let me explain why that was a dumb post a little further

    1. Suggesting swat officers are murderers of unarmed people

    2. Referring to the akm design as "modern"

3.Suggesting Germany, France and uk do not have own firearm designs that are used to arm the majority of their forces.(h&k g36, FAMAS, L85 to name a few)

4.Implying people who own ar's only dress up And "play swat"

5.Implying that if 15 officers rapid fired their ar's at least one would jam(so if this is the case,

How come every soldier who went into combat with an m4 didn't come home in a box becuase of it)

I'm worried, that you, may , in fact be .... Retarded

  5. Ar-15's are great for who they are sold too

Swat because they are mostly shooting and killing unarmed people or two or three under educated thugs that are being rush by 15+ guys with ar 15's so if one or to have malfunctions it doesn't matter and engagements are less than 5 minutes

Poor NATO countries who haven't already made a superior rifle(Germany, France, U,K) and don't ever actually do any fighting anyway like spain or canada.

Guys who like to dress up and play swat team member in matches

Guys who like to dick measure at the range with "sub MOA' bullshit

But for fighting wars and SHTF leave it to the real rifles

AKM47/74/100's---or other modern piston driven designs

Holy shit. You have officially taken the award for dumbest fucking thing I've ever read on the Internet.

    Good for you

  6. Everyone should have a 22lr. Tell him to get a 10/22. If he NEEDS a hard hitting centerfire rifle, get a decent grade mosin nagant and 880 rounds of ammunition. Learn how to clean and shoot both.

If he's preparing for any survival situation, remember this one simple truth; no one wants to be shot.

True story. Have him get a 10/22 or remy 597 or model 60 or any other reliable 22 platform. Buy 5000 rounds and shoot the crap out of that. Then buy a centerfire rifle. If its a combat weapon used to defend himself and family. Stick with something in the relaible AR(we've gone over this in te other thread and pms) or AK realm. Buy as many mags as he can. (I have almost 40 for each platform). And practice practice practice.

  7. It has the cut outs on the side not the notch on the top of the barrel. I was impatient yesterday with some free time so I decided to cut off my shroud 5/8 from the barrel. No threads:[ Now I am debating whether to buy a new front sight block with 24mm threads and install that or to thread the barrel to 14mm. Im leaning towards getting a new sight block seeing that I would have to silver solder the brake on it would be easier to just replace the fsb if I ever had a problem with the brake. My saigas fsb is not pinned but indented my plan is to drill those 4 indents out then replace the sight block and drill holes in the barrel for the pins. In a nutshell does that sound like I am approaching this correctly?

How would I go drilling out the new pin holes for the front sight block seeing as it wouldnt be straight into the barrel and not a full hole.

You got that all right. And you're right about making it easy to remove the brake of you need too.

I'm not sure what you mean about drilling the new pin holes. There will be dents in the in the new FSB to show where they go. Just get the FSB straight(not canted) and drill and install your pins

  8. I have never shot through an fsc47. But my ak74 zig zag does exactly what you say. Redirects more recoil straight back. But muzzle rise is almost eliminated.

That's good to hear, I'd prefer not to cut the threads off the AK-74 fsb.

Just use the ak74 threads. People(like me) go through a lot of work to get those FSBs on their rifles. Don't just hack yours up. You'll be more than happy with a bulgy surplus ak74 brake.

FYI I bored mine out a little to avoid bullet strikes but I hear it isn't neccesarry.

I probably will bore out the ak74 brake, I've seen pictures of brakes that seemed to have clearance for the .30 cal round but had bullet strikes in the end. Could possibly a bigger bore make the brake less effective since it was originally intended for the 5.45 round? or is there no loss of functionality.

I doubt it would be any less functional. The big factors are larger opening and the holes in the top of the block to reduce climb

  10. You're fine if it's not corroded.

And the easiest way to get your gas block aligned is use the pin notch that already exists from the rear pin in the saiga block, to index the rear of your gas block and drive a pin with out drilling there. A bulgy gas block to gas tube will have a little more of a gap than the saiga one did. But will be solid and function fine. I can post a pic of mine if you need one to explain a little better

  11. Do you have just the handguard cut outs on the side or the notch on the top of barrel too? A non chamber stepped 09 with all the handguard retainer notches stands a decent chance of being threaded. Well at least a greater chance than a stepped one. Unfortunately there's no way to be sure without removing part of the shroud.

I belive(don't quote me on this) as long as your brake is silver soldered or welded you are G2g with one in NY. Maybe someone in NY can chime in here and give a definite answer.

  12. That one's not bad, prepareandbook, but every decent AR vs AK thread needs this video...

It makes the different calibers' actual performance very clear.

Both rounds have certain pros and cons just like the rifles themselves. It is well know that higher velocity lighter weight rounds(5.56) penetrate less than heavy weight slower moving projectiles(x39) but other benifits such as flatter shooting, more energy over longer range, weight of

Ammunition are given to the lighter super high velocity round. Once again, it's really not about what's better, it's about what you prefer and what better suits your mission. I live a in dense forrest (Maine) with most of my time spent in that are rather than more open field or open urban environments. So I prefer x39 for my task at hand, but I am also not saying that 5.56 doesn't have a place and wouldn't serve me well of its all I had

  13. A polish will be a rebarreled parts kit gun. If you want new manufacture and guaranteed quality. Saiga(or arsenal(starts off as saiga)) and vepr are the only way to go.

Now if you just want something that functions. But isn't necesarily the belle of the ball your ak options open up wide

  14. No, that is not what I said at all. I'm actually rather puzzled by how you came to the conclusion that is what I stated.

Lets review. My statement was that buying an optic is not per se mutually exclusive to getting good training. If one buys an optic that does not per se preclude him or her from getting training with that gun.

As evidence of that I stated that, most of the guns I've seen at courses have optics. It is true, if we are discussion strictly formal logic, that most is anything above 50% up to and including 100%. In common vernacular, how I was using the word, there is an implication that if one says most instead of all that there were some number of guns that didn't have optics. Let me clarify now, I have also seen guns at training courses without optics.

Even if we take the word "most" to mean what it does in when dealing with formal logic, it is still not the equivalent of saying all. While most could be all, one cannot assume that it means all. Nothing in my post stated that all guns I have seen at training courses had optics, let alone all guns at all training courses. Thus, the first part of your conclusion is already fatally flawed. You have alleged that I said something I never did.

Furthermore, even if I had said that all guns at training courses have optics, you are the one that made the massively flawed logical jump about what that would imply in terms of people who purchase optics. You are correct that even if all guns at training courses had optics that would not mean that all guns with optics go to training courses. However, I never made that assertion or anything remotely close to it.

Skill sets are important. However, it is simply wrong to suggest that quality gear cannot make a difference. There is a reason shooting contests are broken into division which are drawn by gear used. Gear that one doesn't know how to use is unlikely to help a lot. However, quality gear that one knows how to use can be a huge advantage. Red dot sights consistently make people shoot faster. While I have seen people run double barrels, or even, pump guns really fast, they cannot keep up with the equally skilled shooters using semis. Gear can even require less skill to use and result in better results. An example is the laser range finder. I have mil dot scope and work on how to use it to range targets at unknown distances. That said, I could hand my laser range finder to anyone who is literate and can push a button and they would most likely get not only find the distance more quickly but also more accurately. As I said before, typically those that train get pushed towards quality gear based on what they learn during that training.

    PS

Please brush up on your formal logic before calling me out on it again. Thanks. I hope you are not studying for the LSAT or anything.

The only point I was making is.

Let's say you have a tight firearm budget and have 500 to spend. You would be far better served by spending that on 2.5k rounds and training the way you want. Or taking a carbine course and getting professional instruction.

An aimpoint(or other electronic sight) can be a great asset to an already knowledgeable and trained shooter. but shooting fundamentals and combat knowledge/expirience is what gets the other guy dead before you. If you dispute that,well...get a job with some gear pimp, and fulfil your dream of being a gear wh... Well you know

  15. I have the trs 25 and have been very happy. It is a great trainer for someone planning to get an aimpoint.

It's not as strong ot have anywhere near the battery life of the aimpoint but is great on a plinker or training analog. I would call it the most sturdy of the lower priced (under 100) red dots
