Go with a $25 surplus Bulgarian set from APEX (assuming parts count isn't a concern). Finish is a little tired as they are, but they're gorgeous once refinished.

I've found that GT's accuracy is easily comparable to Core-lokt...at 1/5 of the price.
-
Oh. If doing it again I would go with the 340. Handguard retainer - $40-50, FSB - $60-90, handguard - $30-50. Easily pays for itself if you ask me.
I second this. The 340 more than pays for itself in parts, and even more importantly, the headache.

Stock on these tends to be erratic, but I wouldn't be surprised if at least one vendor had them in stock before that.
-
Just use Golden Tiger and you can have the best of both worlds.

Not all saigas have a stepped chamber.

Ha. That last line is funny- hehe. But dude, you're scaring the shit out of me with all this talk about beating on it with a hammer.
So you've never worked on a AK, then...
In one of these forums, I saw where a guy cut the front of his off with a tubing cutter, and the barrel was threaded. (He was installing a brake) Mine is an '09, same as his, except that I don't have the two pins on the bottom, just flats that have never been drilled out. What is the likelihood that mine is threaded, also?
0%.
Is there a list of serial numbers somewhere that says which runs had the military threaded barrels installed?
These are 74s. They don't thread the barrels. That's the whole premise of doing the FSB swap. The block itself is threaded, negating any reason to have a threaded barrel. This is why NO 5.45s ever came with factory-threaded barrels.

You could *TEMPORARILY* superglue the .223 guide in place and hand cycle it to see what the story is. That way if you see any issues you can just snap it out and replace is with the appropriate guide.

I could smack myself in the face with a rusty claw hammer for not buying more back when AIM had them for $12 a piece.

None. Those days are over. Best deal you'll possibly find on 74 mags (for what they are) right now is here:
-
Apex has entire surplus sets (upper and lower handguard and buttstock) for $25. They're in slighty rough condition, finish-wise, but are perfectly functional and refinish beautifully.
-
Looks great. Always love to see a classic rendition.

Considering shipping, that Fleet Farm price is still a HELL of a deal. Cheapest online is $15 more than that BEFORE the shipping.
You're sitting on a goldmine there.

kvar wants 1700 for bulgarian krinkov kits w/o receiver..... whats with the premium on carbines?
That one comes with the correct barrel and has matching numbers. The receiver is one of the cheapest parts of the builds.

Seal it with Spar varnish. It's specifically made to protect wood from water, and is very tough to scratch. I clean my guns in the sink (damn corrosive), and don't bother to take any of the wood off before hand. It's gone through several washes, and has held up perfectly. Literally water-proof. Looks pretty bloody good, too.

File the REAR SIGHT BLOCK side.

Only major functional difference I know of is that the Beryl actually locks in the closed position, and the ACE is only spring loaded in the closed position. Sounds like the cheek wield could be an issue, though. Another option for you could be the Tantal folding wire stock. Same exact operation as the Beryl, but you can add a cheek riser to it:

I just found out I can have a local builder put together a bulgarian 5.45x39 aks74u together for 1500.00 and install the muzzle once I buy a tax stamp at no extra charge.
after the krinkov research I have done it sounds decent.
what do you guys think?
Be careful with that. See if you can find other ones he's built to make sure he doesn't perform a hack job. Also, do you already have a barrel?
-
Sounds like the Polish Beryl stock would be your best bet. Very similar to the ACE in appearance, works with the standard rear trunnion and folds to right.
-
I've had that same experience as above. I've had my UTG mount on and off a ton of times, and at least at 100yds, it has held zero perfectly.
-
Nvm, misread question.
-
It's very possible and is done often. You really need to do a search as there are loads of threads on this. But, in short, you'd need to do the following:
1. Basic conversion (trigger, pistol grip, buttstock, bullet guide)
2. Front end conversion (gas tube, gas block and handguard retainer, upper and lower HGs)
3. Front sight block swap + muzzle brake (for a 74/100-series clone) or threading the barrel (for slant brake)
There are other things I'm forgetting, but that's the jist of it.
Here's an example:

As far as those who actually have it in stock right now, Classic Arms is the cheapest I can find, beating AIM out by a buck (for me, anyway). Not a huge deal, but that also saves the trouble of having to upload a photo of your ID, which I'm not exactly nuts about.

Out of everything I've tried, GT is the most accurate. It's probably loaded hotter than most anything else you can buy (20-40fps faster than Yugo surplus on average*).
*I'm basing this off of a chronograph I found of 4 different ammo brands, and I know two of them were GT vs. Yugo. I'm positive of the numbers I posted, but as I'm yet unable to find the chrono, please take this with a grain of salt. That aside, GT is still my favorite.
