  1. i can't find any any info on converting them. Looks like you don't have to move the trigger, so that would save money. Although not really because to stay 922r compliant, id still have to change the trigger group. They look like the the front hand guards could easily be changed without the gas tube, so that would save money, but i don't see anything about the mag conversions. What im thinking right now, is that id probably have around the same amount into either one, getting it to look how i want, but there is a heck of a lot more info out there on converting the saiga. I don't really care about it being a genuine yugo for my yugo conversion. I simply like the looks of the yugos. Ill be perfectly happy with a saiga with an underfolder, etc. Anyone have any info on converting one of those zastavas?

The are threads on ak47 net about the Zatsava conversion.

  2. CSS is the place to get your Saiga freak on, and as far as the locktite goes, get both red and blue.... use red on anything you'll never want to take off...trigger guards and such, use blue on items you want on but may one day want to take off, like pistol grips and buttstocks...

Yep.....anything with Red will probably require heat to break free......

  3. Why a saiga, because mine cost less than a worn out clone.

The Zastava's are only $350 brand new........sure you will have money in the conversion, BUT...You will have a New Genuine Yugo....

  4. My water has a high iron content. To get the iron out, it takes a chlorine injection and time to oxidize the iron to make it clump and stick in the filter. The tempering tank is just another pressure storage tank (accumulator) that is in the line between the normal 20gal pressure tank and the filter. A chemical pump injects chlorine water into the line between the tanks when the well pump runs. It draws from a separate 15gal tank where I put 1 1/2 cup of chlorine bleach to each 5 gal of treat water. The chemical pump is adjustable so the chlorine content can be regulated to oxidize the iron but not leave any chlorine smell in the water. After the filter I have a dual resin tank softener that is never off line to regenerate, it switches tanks seamlessly and regenerates the off line tank without effecting the one that is in use. Single tank softeners use a time clock and regenerate on a schedule with out regard to need. Mine regenerates every 1,000gal. By using the 'red out' salt for the brine tank I can slightly decrease the chlorine just below saturation so there is none in the finished water. The 75 gal tank of pressurized water has the side benefit of available tap water increasing to 95 gal when there is NO electricity! I can run the generator periodically and have water continuously! pressure tanks are cheap and easy to install, just plumb one into the supply line with a check valve on the supply side. The full volume of the tank is then available at the tap when the supply fails. Beats the hell out of storing 5 gal buckets, and it is always fresh.

You seem to know your stuff! Wow!

But I do have a question. i know that high iron will leave sediment in the pipes and rings in your toilet.

    But is there harmful effects?

I think drinking chlorine in water would be worse for you than iron in water.

  5. ^I do have all those minus the punches. I have looked through a lot of the diy's here, just looks intimidating for me and I don't want to screw something up. I have never drilled out rivets before, so I really don't know how I will do.

I guess I will get some punches and go to town lol. Will I need a dremel too?

Don't be afraid. It is really easy, and enjoyable! You will have fun doing it yourself and enjoy your Saiga that much more!

    Good Luck and Welcome Aboard.

BTW, don't worry about screwing it up, the only people that can screw up a Saiga is the ATF!!

  6. Thanks. Yeah my Saiga cycles federal target loads really well. I am not sure why mine does where others don't? I'm definitely gonna be doing the conversion within the next month. It seems so easy to do it I dont know why you wouldn't!

    Welcome aboard!!

I know a lot of people have differing opinions.....but....Here's my 2 cents....

I always recommend breaking her in real good on some high brass if you can afford it. It's good to see she eating low already, but run some premium through her to get your wear points in her.....

I am old school.....just an opinion.....everyone has one!

Good luck, you will like the conversion, it is almost as fun as shooting her!

"High brass Break in" is a waste of time any money. Cycling the weapon violently by hand does about the same thing.... almost nothing. Thousands of rounds of "high brass break in" might reprofile the action enough to do some good in one aspect, but at the same time would cause undesirable wear on the weapon in other areas, while the only point in shooting that ammo was to make it run well off of birdshot. Not a good idea.... I realy wish people would stop offering this nonsense as advice. Very few S12s are really that close to running well on birdshot. I have owned 8 from various years and I know what it takes to make these things run. DIY'ers are better off doing some research and learning how to do a decent reprofile of the action and gas system modifications. Many tools can be bought for the price of ~200 rounds of "high brass" ammo. At least the tools can really move the weapon forward when it comes to reliability and overall feel of the weapon while firing.... and you still have the tools for the next S12 wink.png

Also, there are some 'smiths out there that would probably get the thing running for about the same amount of money that someone might spend on high brass ammo while beating the weapon into submission. The owner would end up with better weapon.

Do any of you think that I am running hundreds of rounds of high brass in these things when I get them, so they can maybe become reliable with "low brass" ammo? No, I am removing metal in the right places. That is how it is done folks.

Like I said, others have differing opinions. That was mine, This was his.

Besides, I don't think it is wasting money if you are shooting your weapon and learning about it. How it cycles, how it feels on different loads, dropping mags and reloading, tactical sighting....ect ect ect......all build "Muscle Memory" with your gun.

If you are doing that and breaking it in at the same, not a wasted cent IMO........

  7. Why not do it in clear glass jars then?

Yes, use glass jars, like 1/2 gallon clear mason canning jars.

I highly recommend a 4 pass RO for the water you drink and cook with. Works with a well or city water. Another consideration is storage, My treatment system has a 20 gal pressure tank, a 75 gal tempering tank, and there is 40gal in the water heater. If you don't need to treat your water, the 75 gal tank and a check valve is still a great idea. You can get one cheap, and it really helps regulate the water flow, no more shower pressure going away if someone uses the garden hose.

GOB, please say more about a tempering tank.

Where is it in the system.

Is it higher in altitude than the fixtures where it will provide a gravity flow after the pressure is gone.

I am really interested in this thought line.

I am interested in the tempering tank also......where does it go?

If I put one in the attic could I actually increase mean water pressure in the house?

BTW....no need to purify, water is CLEAN as long as you LOVE iron!!

  8. Thanks. Yeah my Saiga cycles federal target loads really well. I am not sure why mine does where others don't? I'm definitely gonna be doing the conversion within the next month. It seems so easy to do it I dont know why you wouldn't!

  9. This one is only about a year old, so it really doesn't qualify as vaporware yet, but Taurus put it in their "New for 2011" catalog and the rumor mill has it the ATF didn't approve it. It would be nice to hear something offical.

It was because it only shot 28 Gauge.....no pistol caliber bullet crossover to make it a pistol. (Like .45lc and .410)

At least that was what I was able to gather.........

No, they didn't approve the Raging Judge cuz 28 ga has a bore diameter of .550 (.55 cal) and the largest legal handgun caliber is .50. The largest gauge one could legally have in a handgun in the US is probably a 36 ga and thats only if the ATF would be willing to give you .006" lee-way (bore diameter of 36 ga is .506) OR the bore diameter of the handgun was .006 undersized which would be fine, I think, for a shotgun with a short rifled barrel.

Do you know if the one they showed for a little while at that years SHOT show had a rifled barrel?

    I heard it didn't.

  11. I really like my Tac47 AutoPlug.

No issues. No over gass, no undergass when you get her dialed in.

    It works.

Just remember to use some loctitie on the adlustment screw once you get her dialed in like you want it.

Mine moved a little before I did that.

    Now, no problems at all.

Why don't some folks with autoplug issues chime in? Or could it be that there are no issues with over gassing? I think the auto plug would be the way to go except for maybe the price? So for the price/adjustability gunfixer, MD arms, or DPH arms or find you a good welder/machinist to add a knob to the factory plug. I chose the MD Arms early on b/c I liked the idea and didn't know about the others.

  12. I don't know anything about that Scorpion grip but I like the Hogue rubberized grips so much that I'll probably never use anything else. If it were me I would go with that one. Like I said, I'm not knocking the scorpion, but if you're just taking a shot in the dark and haven't used either one I can vouch for the Hogue as being fantastic.

I just put a Hogue on my WASR today......gonna order a couple more to outfit some of the other members of my AK family.....they are NICE!
