I weld up the old trigger hole, and rivet holes. I do the trigger hole a few passes at a time with a tig, then let it cool to keep heat down. Just get a piece of copper plate to back the hole so you can turn it over and weld flat, it would probably be fine if you didn't....but it won't be as sturdy as if you had never made this mistake. It's an ak, you can fix it. Good luck.

I learned over time that leaving the stub on the bolt carrier as long as possible allowed it to ride under the dust cover without mod's, and also kept your knuckles further away from the rear sight if you happened to ride the bolt home.
Angling the top of the handle away from the receiver might not be a bad idea.

I do prefer to space them from the carrier slightly myself as there are multiple reasons my clients opt for our the vertical charging handles.
Some get them so they can reach over the top of the weapon with their left hand to charge the weapon which is the original reason for their development.
However some get them so they can grab the handle quicker with their right hand & you can be almost certain that even if the client charges the weapon with their left, their friends are going to with their right still.
And quite a few get them so the weapon can be charged easier with a weak hand such as clients with arthritis in their hands or younger men with ladies who have issues pulling back the carrier with 1 finger due to less strength.
For instance, this shotgun will be charged with a right hand for obvious reasons, however should he ever decide to change the setup, it'll still be able to be easily charged with a left hand.
This being said, if someone tells me they're running only H&K sights & never plan to change their setup, I'll install them closer to the weapon.
Spacing depending on application makes a more dynamic modification that can change with the weapon while only helping performance, never impeding it.
I want one of the ones that slips over the stock charging handle and locks with a allen screw. If some one has one or can tell me where to get one please PM me.

All things considered, for now I agree that getting the receivers heat treated would be cost prohibited, as would building my own oven....in the short term. And being that this will be my first atempt at building a gun from the ground up, I think the nodaks are a great route. I see the 545's are on sale...so any leads on a good parts kit for them? Would Akbuilder be the route to go? Thanks in advance for any help!

What are you supposed to fill the holes in with? I've done two S-12's and used plugs. Fixing to convert two Saiga 223's this week.... What other custom options have you done? I thought about JB Weld, not sure if that would hold up over the long run with oils and cleaners in the gun.....
Hole plugs are fine for the amateur builder.
TAC and others professional builders weld and blend the holes before refinishing.
JB Weld may work on the 223 with its low recoil.
Agreed! If your paying anybody to convert your saiga, they'd damn well better weld those holes up and repaint them with a real gun coating not some cheap high temp bbq or dupli-color. Anything less than a duracoat is unacceptable for a pro job. I think tac says he parkerizes, then teflon coats. Keep in mind if you find a gunsmith and there's "no waiting list" there's probably a reason why.

An interesting side note, is they have the most complex eye of any animal alive. Though not quite as cool as the pistol shrimp.

A soft hull from high temps can cause that too. I had it happening to me with some shells left in the truck bed oneday while out shooting. The ones from inside the ac'd cab didn't produce the issue. If the temp isn't the problem, just break that corner on the hood slightly so the round slips by without snagging, don't go adjusting the thickness of the hood though.

I too was raised similar. My father never punished me for getting into fights in school so long I wasn't the instigator. Kids will be kids, and so need to be. They have to be left to sort things out on their own, for the most part. We can guide them, lead by example, but ultimately the choice is theirs. We shouldn't be so afraid of misbehavior or retaliation that we ignore the fundamental liberties of life in America. Many of us are sitting here heads in the sand while, they pile the dirt higher and higher atop us in this grave we've dug for ourselves.
As far as teachers and administrators go, they're no better than the pansy ass prosecutor who is atempting to ruin this childs life. What will anybody gain from this? It make me wonder if these school officals even have children at all. Would they be so quick to condemn their own offspring? Probably not. But in overcrowded schools, and populace in general we're all just another potenial $. Which is why I intend to remove my children from public schools entirely. I figure if enough of us get tired of this bullshit, and funding drops even lower somebody will have to take notice. I'm sure that the obvious immediate retaliation for this will be an atempt to ban home schooling entirely. Which in some states it already is. I feel that those of us convicted enough to pull our kids and make that change strong enough and persistant enough to make it one hell of a fight. Personally my wife and I are willing to risk the loss of her additional income to ensure our children aren't subjacated, to this current state of diminished liberties. This may not be a reasonable solution for many familes who are struggling to make ends meet, but the least we can all do is attend our city councel meetings and school functions to voice our opinions. Be loud, be proud, make yourselves heard!

I can't help but wonder if this unnatural supression of human nature is a significant contributing factor to the episodes of extreme violence we've seen previously. Children are being so conditioned not to retaliate or defend themselves in minor altercations, for fear of extreme consequences, that the mentality becomes " if they're going to chop my head off no matter the offense, I might as well make it worth it". Combined with years of pent up agression and a lack of understanding how to rationalise it and apply approrpiate level of violence, creates the perfect enviroment for an explosive decompression. I think these edu-crates are simply creating a new problem.

I've been really curious about these flats, and particulars of the legal restrictions. Would it be legal to make an ak pistol from one of these flats if the back of the receiver had a plate welded on? And would that make it legal for use with as less than 16" barrel?
The other question is in regards to heat treating. Since heat treating is a manufacter process it can't be done unless the treating company has an ffl. But if a reciver were bent but had no holes for rivets,fcg, or pistol grip, would it still require an FFL to be heat treated by a third party, considering it woud be less than 80%?

In the absence of any threatening letter or previous remarks it seems absurd to atempt to call this an act of malice or terrorism. Just one more attempt by the edu-crates, and extremist authorites to indoctrinate our children to accept diminished rights and grow up thinking it's normal.
One of my nephews got caught chewing ( yeah - fucking chew ) OFF school grounds, but got banned an entire football season for it. He was an honor student, and my brother in law was on the school board ( and president or whatever on the church board) and couldn't get it over turned. Fucking school is a joke anymore. (nephew was a stand out athlete)Oh, but if it was the coaches son, the QB, it would be a different story, Politics on a small scale. Same old shit, different day. Nephew was a good guy, honor roll guy - just got fucked. At least you can say it wasn't politics as usuall, with the bro in law. Just stupid fucking policies. This country is turning into or has turned into a fucking pussy nation. I'm starting to hate the retarded fuckers that make the rules. Starting at the top. It all trickles downhill.

Reading this reminded me of the songs we used to sing in elementry, today it'd get you locked up for terroristic threats. I know yall know the ones. When I lived in Kali, shortly after the columbine incident, I was attending a continuation/trade school, and a class mate of mine wrote a silly for an assignment about an green goblin that told him to burn things. Well he was ousted and credits trashed. Shortly after the school was flooded with little poster that read "Making threats is no joke". Myself not being one to stand quiet when I though something was obviously injust, decieded the approriate thing to do was make my own poster, using the same font and format as the existing ones reading " Making jokes is no threat". Definatly I proudly confessed when questioned and earned my self an expulsion of my own. Was it worth it? FUCK YEAH.

My understanding is that certain hand guards can effect the way the recoil is transfered to the bolt carrier. Polishing seems like the shortest course, considering it cycled correctly to begin with. As far as cycling from the hip, it's kinda how i decied wether the gun is what i would call reliable. It should opperate correctly reguardless of how you hold it. In the heat of the moment you don't want to have to be checking your grip and posture before taking a shot. Ofcourse practice will help ensure that you do anyway, combined with a highly reliable weapon, your odds of sucess are greatly increased.

I noticed it wouldn't feed from his pump, and we didn't see him load them in the siaga. I can only imagine the feeding issues with these. BUT for a day out plinking might be econimical, if they feed even half ass.

If you can change your breaks, you can convert a siaga. You want something special done, like sbr, or inconel blast chamber, maybe even a top of the line finish. Go pro. If you go pro you can't loose, if you DIY, you'll gain experience, it's easy if you have basic skill sets with tool, not really any serious gunsmithing required, lots of videos for help. But yea if yourself doubt go with Tac47 he's a local guy, and everybody around here recommends him.
