  1. Like spartacus said, spin your gas knob all the way in so it bottoms out, then back it out till it clicks completely in postion 1, thats your default setting. For break in you should use high brass. Most guns about 200 rounds should do it. Then try some low brass, if that gives you trouble, yea go with a booster puck, then try polishing the bolt. If none of those fix it, then you'll have to adress the port issue.(I'm guessing you'll have to do that anyway.) Good luck and welcome!

  2. The KSG looks cool yes it's more compact, but it's going to be slower than the s12, period. It's an apples and organges comparison. Once all the issues are worked out as others have said, it definately has potential to be prominate pump action HD weapon. That said with the option of folding stocks, high capactiy mags (maybe some double stacked 20's in the future, will be a great improvment over the cumberson drum) giving it ability to quickly reload, whats left to compare, price? At $800 MSRP, it doesn't stand a chance unless the ban actualy happens., in that case too bad for the folks who didn't get their s12s' already.

  3. Do the polish job, it's easy, it's cheap, and you'll FEEL a diffrence when your done just hand cylcling. The polish and Vplug are the only modifications to my stock s12 and it runs all the wall world and federal you can feed it. If you read the MDArm info on the drum they recommend NOT changing the standard 3 turns because it will be insufficant for heavy loads. You don't really want to have a mag thats only good for light loads, and ones that are only good for high ones do you?

I did my initial polish job with just some mill scale jewler files and 180grit sand paper to get it to run the Federal perfectly from the hip, since then i've gone back with a buffing wheel and got it to run the wally world junk fine too. Read the how to on the bolt, it's cheap it's effective and it's easy. Then start looking at your gas system. Good luck.

  4. I'm wanting to build a psl, with dragunov style. I've found a great kit for what seems a resonable price, complete with reveiver and trunnions, but I'm curious about 922r and how it affects this build. Puls any How To help would be awesome. Thanks in advance!

  5. I bought the MD 20, and V plug about a month ago. Drum ran slugs, and buck shot like a champ on setting 3, and Vplug allowed me to run winchester bulk from the factory stick on 5. Having a gun with 3 full ports I decieded a DIY polish job was in order. I started with some 180 grit and worked my way up to 220, using some mill scale jewlers files to knock sharp edges off the areas I seen wear inside the reciver and on the bolt. I took no real material away just removed paint and slicked down the surfaces as best i could by hand. Today I took out took out the drum for the first time since doing my full polish job. SUCCESS! Drum ran that federal like champ, not one singe FTE or FTL on setting 5! And got the factory 5rnd to run it on setting 3. But still having some trouble with the winchester ammo. Honestly I don't see a point in tinkering with it's functionalty to get it to run the winchester bulk, actualy my localy wall world sells the federal a buck cheaper! Try doing a polish job, bet your surprised with the results. If you doubt your ability send it to a pro.

  6. I would like to also add the need to learn self defense techniques. Personally I practice empty hand vs knife techniques every week. I also carry a Taurus 24/7 .40 cal or Glock 23 in the winter. The video of the lady was a perfect example of a classic knife attack, and her response in both instances got her hurt or killed. Supplement your training to include being able to draw and fire. 21 feet is considered the "Threat Zone" . No kidding even at 21 feet I have consistently "killed" the guy with the holstered gun by charging and stabbing him or taking him to the ground and dis-arming him. I am sure there are a few quick draw McGraws out there who might get off a shot, but the guy in the classes KNOW what is about to happen. Please guys do not rely solely on the gun. By the time you know the attack is happening you will already be at a dis-advantage. I am a second degree black-belt in Hapkido and I carry everywhere I go.

    Juggs loved the pic.

    +1

Too many people rely soley on a weapon burried in their pocket out of reach, and have no real idea of how quickly an attacker can really move. It's easy to forget that even a wounded man can still kill. Learn some hand to hand people! Oh and I carry the kel-tec pf9 isw sob, and a sig-tac neck knife everywhere i go. 10 years of jiu jitsu incase i don't have chance for either.

  7. I recently bought the Sig 556Russian, I'm pleased with it, I like the red dot alot. It's really acurate at 100 yrds, Sig has done some great work keeping the climb down and recoil is minimal. However it doesn't like the tula ammo much. The first round failed to eject, infact the spent casing was lodged so tight in the barrel i had to slam the bolt shut and rip it back open by hand to clear it out. After that I could only get it to operate with the valve in the number 2 position, till i fired about 6 more then it ran in no 1 for about 60 rounds till it fouled up enough to need to go back to pos.2. Now that I've ran about 300 through it, it still doesn't like the first few rounds on postion 1, but then it cleans up and repeats the previous cycle. I've not had anymore issue with casing not clearing the barrel. All in all I'm very pleased.

  8. What is the cut off capacity for magazines to exclude them from the sporting configuration? I though I read that it only applied if "pistol type grip protrudes conspicuously below the receiver" under 922r subsection...ofcourse I'm not a lawyer and am probably wrong. I'm only curious because I've been holding out on converting. What I do know is that the local range won't let me use my saiga for skeet, no matter what configuration or magazine, those pussies! (Oh I too am in Texas, and yea most everything is legal here)

  9. I'm considering making a 410 sbs, but I'm not sure how to remove the gas tub from the reciver, and kinda curious about what the shortest length it can down to and function.

  10. Great imput. Kinda the way i was leaning. But that leads me to my next question: what exactly is the proper port size for a 3 port 19" barrel and what is the proper way to measure the barrel correctly (from where to where)?

Question of my own: I've got a 3 port s12, using the MD V plug, with polished bolt ( did it my self, not paulys) Since installing and polishing i can run the wally world bulk ammo out of my stock 5 rnd mag on position 5 flawlessly, but not at all with the MD 20, (having said that the MD20 runs slugs and buck excellent on setting 3, {would adding a port be over gassing?} ) Because using the stock 5 rnd i can cylcle the buck and slugs on setting 2 just fine.

You could try reducing the spring revolutions in the drum down to 2-2.5. I bet that will do the trick.

I though I read somewhere that reducing the revoultions would make the drum unsuitable for higher loads......Maybe I'm asking for too much, but i'd like have my gun set us so that the only adjustment required when swaping ammo loads is the gas plug.

You should try measuring your ports, if they are undersized adding a 4th SMALLER port or opening up the three wont over gas it. Personally I think overgassing is mostly a non issue, thats what the ADJUSTABLE gas plug is for.

Its not asking to much for your gun to work right, without changing anything but the gas setting.

You are correct reducing the tension on the drum is not recommmended for high power loads.

The drum should function just fine with bulk ammo, if it doesnt you should consider slicking up the action some more befor port work though. take a look at the carrier rails, that made a big diffrence in mine. you can profile the bottom of the carrier but you have to be careful not to remove too much.

I did all I could befor messing with the ports on my gun but sometimes thats all that will make it function 100%
