  1. seems like most domestic manufacturers of 7.62x54r and 7.62x39 use .308 diameter bullets since they already are set up to manufacture .308

Winchester used to use .308 bullets in their x39 cartridges. Last box of FMJ I bought to sight in my Saiga, the bullets measured .310 right above the cantelure. Last box of Super-X SP measured .311. Remington has always used .311 bullets in their x39 Core-lok line, but haven't shot any of their loads since I sold my first SKS in 1996.

If they made V-max in x54r, that would be one nasty round. V-max is a fragmentation round for varmints. I've seen ballistic gel shot with x39, and let's just say I wouldn't want to get hit with it.

  2. Only plastic I put in my Arsenal is bakelite. I had 2 Tapco 30 rounders, and they were tight......super tight.....in the magwell. I swapped them to a bud for a couple of steels because they cured the wobble in his Romy build.

PS: Love the avatar. First generation Doomer here, and still plugging with the new mods.

  3. I shot nothing but Yugo M67 in my SKS Carbine, and could lay down 1" groups at 100 yds all day long with irons. I pushed it to 200 yds once, and got some excellent 2-4" groups.

My Arsenal loves this stuff. I got one 5 shot group at 100 yds I could cover with a nickle. One 200 yd string yielded a 2" group. All of my go-to mags are loaded with this stuff.

As stated, it is corrosive, so scrub that baby when you are done. I simply wash it down with Windex at the range, then scrub it when I get home(range is an hour drive for me).

  4. i emailed ben murray and he said he could modify the bolt to accept a spring, long as the pin is the flat type for 30 plus return shipping.

Murray's the man. He did a spring loaded pin/bushing job on my SKS last year. After I got it back, no more punched primers. So far, my Arsenal hasn't punched one, but if it does, Ben gets the job.

  5. I had an SKS(sold it last week to my cousin), and the Arsenal. Out to 100 yds, both rifles shot the same. Average 1-3" groups at 100yds. At 150yds, the Arsenal groups started opening up to 2-4", but the SKS held it's 1-3" group. At 200 yds, both rifles opened up dramatically, with the Arsenal laying down a 6" group and the SKS a 4-5" group. At 300 yds, I could ring the 16" gong with the SKS 7 out of 10, but the Arsenal was maybe 4 out of 10 with no wind.

Keep/sell the 20" and buy a 16. Take said 20" and make it a "Baby Dragunov".

  6. Yeah, it is slightly off-color which is why I appreciate it!

I am assuming that it is repackaged TAP stuff with Zombie Green tips and hulls by the bullet weights and designs they are offering.

No. It's V-max with the tip changed to neon green. I looked at some at the local fun shop for my x39 AK, and it was the same price as V-max. Nice thing about the x39 stuff is it's zinc plated instead of the polymer stuff. They took the time to polish it out like Silver Bear.

I sent them an email to see if I could get some for reloading purposes. I could see the look on my wife's face now......

"Hon, grab the box labeled "Zombie Apocalypse" for me quick, will ya? It has the special bullets just for this."

  7. Stumbled on this thread researching .223 Saigas.

The XM193 was an experimental round Federal was testing for the DOD. It failed, thus they marketed it for civilian use. My cousin builds ARs as a hobby, and WILL NOT fire XM193 even if being eaten by rogue biker zombies. He's had XM193 blow up one of his builds, and thus no longer uses it. When he pulled the bullets from the remainder, no two shells had the same charge. Fluke? Maybe. Federal did replace the rifle, however.

  8. OUCH!!! $449 for an SKS. That would be a paratrooper(16" barrel model) here. Trick is, the SKS's are slowly drying up in the Chicom variety. I paid $59 for my first one with 2K of ammo, then Clinton banned them from import, and sold it for $160 3 years later.

Mine prefers the Yugo M67 stuff over most milsurp rounds. Corrosive primed, but gives great groups. Tulammo does good in it as well. Basically, it is what it is: another Commie rifle that goes bang no matter what you shove down it's throat. :super:

  9. It has a corrosive primer, but get some Yugo M67 Ball. It's brass cased, Berdan primed, and running about 17 cents a round at AIM right now. For my AK/SKS rifles, it has proven the most accurate of the surplus stuff. As long as you clean it after shooting(or within a reasonable time frame), it's not bad stuff. If your bore is chrome lined, even better. Easier clean-up.

$214 a case(1260 rounds) right now. The 1120 orund cases on strippers has dried up. :(

  10. I finally got to the range yesterday and did a sight in/paper print. All I can say is WOW!!!! I used the same procedure Mother Russia uses, listed here: http://www.ak-47.net/ak-47/sightingin.php . Ammo was Winchester white box FMJ unless noted. Targets were 6x10 Dirty Bird with 1"x2" center bull. I used the "center hold" sight view.

First target, 25 yards with sight in battle setting.

Had a couple of flyers out of the gate because the guy next to me was sighting in a 7mm Ultra-mag, and my earplug fell out. :cryss: I'd fired 4 rounds before I could get my finger off the trigger it scared me so bad.

Cranked the sight a bit, and repeated. Rear sight is still in the battle position.

    P1010881.jpg

The group in the 8 ring was some Uly from Wal-mart I capped off waiting for a cease fire. Not bad.

Out to 50 yards we went. Sight still in battle position.

    P1010887.jpg

I had fired 15 rounds when the rangemaster walked up(Vietnam vet), and pointed out I was doing two things wrong. I was canting the rifle to the left slightly, and I was pulling to the left right as the trigger "broke". I'd never noticed that before with my SKS, but noticed when he told me. He told me most people who aren't experienced with military sights do it, and don't notice until told. I fired the last 5 while he helped me hold it straight.

    Last5rounds.jpg

OUCH!!! That's a group right there. I took my scribe and marked the sights.

I then moved out to 100 yards and popped 5 rounds of Uly offhand. I dropped the rear leaf to the "100 meter" setting. Between the wind whipping it and the dust obscuring my view, I didn't do half bad.

    P1010884-1.jpg

That was as fast as I could pump the trigger into a 6" diameter circle. I switched to some Wolf Mil-Classic FMJ I bought several years ago. Looks like my Arsenal doesn't like the Wolf at all.

    P1010885-1.jpg

I then set up my SKS and dropped 40 rounds of Yugo M67 at 100 yards to wrap up the day. 12" cardboard square with reference line for sighting.

    P1010886-1.jpg

First 10(along the bottom) were my warm-up shots.

After shooting the Arsenal, I am impressed with both accuracy, function, and feel. With the Bulgy zigzag brake, recoil was actually less than my SKS with no brake.
