  1. OK. I called my FFL bud today, and got the skinny. Shandlanos, you are correct. The newer surplus steel core rounds have a lead "buffer" between the jacket and core, and thus are not classed under the AP lingo. The new 5.45x39mm rounds haven't been hit with the handgun classification yet, thus the reason importers/FFL holders can carry/sell it. Hold on, BATFE's working on it, though. Here's the article explaining the confusion:

    http://yarchive.net/gun/politics/armorpiercing.html

Yes, individuals can sell it, but FFL's have to follow "bound book" protocol. The exception to the rule(per my FFL, which he confirmed through the BATFE personally) is if the FFL is selling the ammo on a consignment basis. From my FFL: "It's a thin gray line there, because the FFL technically isn't selling the AP, but allowing an individual to "rent" a portion of his/her counter space to sell the item(s), much like a flea market or gun show table. If the FFL is attempting to sell the AP classed rounds on his/her own, and not following "bound book" protocol, then they are in commission of a felony." And, yes, we have private individuals who set up tables at our local gun shows to sell their firearms, which is perfectly legal in my state. FTF sales are NOT regulated in MT.

The Chinese rounds are/were classed as AP for the simple fact the entire core is steel with a thin copper jacket. 2 statements in the above article show how the BATFE twisted this around(think Black Talons being called "Cop Killers" even though it was proven they would NOT penetrate body armor):

    5) Hardness of the bullet is irrelevant. 6) Ability to actually penetrate any kind of soft body armor is irrelevant.

So the short answer is YES the Chicom bullets are legal to own, but if the seller is a FFL, he/she is breaking the law selling it unless it is on consignment.

  2. Some of it's steel-core, some of it isn't. If it's steel-core (and therefore legally defined as "armor-piercing pistol ammunition"), and he holds an FFL, technically he isn't supposed to be selling it. That said, if it is steel-core Chinese ammo, eight to ten bucks is about what I usually see it go for at gun shows. I have a bunch of the steel-core stuff in the yellow boxes with red lettering. The casings are an odd purple, I'm assuming lacquer-coated steel.

I guess that means all my x54R surplus is illegal for sale by all the surplus outlets I bought it from. 95% of the Russian/Hungarian/Romanian/Polish is steel cored.

The AP designation was given to it by the Libtard Media and Libtards in general. It's no more armor piercing than any other steel cored ammo out there. AP rounds have a special hardened tip to them, and are designated with a black tip( I know....I have some AP rounds). The Chicom steel core lacks this tip. Yes, it was banned from import by Clinton, just like other Chinese weapons. It is still 100% legal for sale, as my local shop sells it when they get it.

$8 per 20 is a good low-end price. I've seen it go as high as $20 per box at the gun show.

  3.

does yours tend to shoot high with the silver bear? mine shoots really high with the 203gr brown bear. mine favored the privi 150gr sp the best

At 200 yards, it's about 2-3" high. I tinkered with the Microclick, and have a special dot marked just for that load at 100 and 200 yards. The Silver Bear does "feel" hotter than the Winchester, though. Haven't tried the Privi, but BVAC(located in my town, BTW) has a 150 gr load. I may have to try those, as the Mosin seems to perform the best with loads >184gr.

  4. I bought 4 from a guy on Gunbroker for $9 each plus $7.50 shipping on all 4. Normally I buy from AIM, too(especially my ammo when Yugo is in stock)

If you buy any aftermarket poly mags, stick with Tapco only. Right now, Benny at www.milsurpstuff.com has Tapco 30 rounders for $9. Last Promag I had for my PT100 should have been renamed "Jam-o-matic". If you want it, it's somewhere in the woods at the top of Lookout Pass.

  5. Minute of Man? Here, we say "Minute of Dead".

Here are a few more Pics to show the movement. First tel are were it sits normally. Third and fourth are pushed over to show the movement

Hmmm.....your sight only goes to 300 meters? Look at mine again. Mine goes to 1K meters. Might want to try ordering another sight before modifying the trunnion. Give me a couple of days, and I'll hit my rear sight pins with the calipers. Got a Mojo on the way, and installing it as soon as it arrives.

  6. It's not that spring pressure is not strong enough. It's quite strong actually. It's that the sides of the notch in the trunnion which holds the sight leaf from left and right movement seems to be to wide for the sight and it is pressed up against the right side of said notch. The gap circled in this photo does not exist on the opposite side.

I just grabbed my Saiga, and it looks like you have bad machining on your trunnion holes. I'm snapping pics now of mine for comparison.

    EDIT:

    OK....here's mine.

    P1010872.jpg

I tried, and my sight has no side-to-side play at all.

  7. If you are going to do some serious long-range shooting(200-300 yards), 2 things NOT to skimp on.

    1. Ammo

    2. Optics

That said, I bought my son a Centerpoint 3-9x40mm illuminated mil-dot from Wal-mart for his Stevens .308($60 plus rings), and it has held up well for 2 years. He dropped it once in the woods, and it fell about 10' into a gully. Nothing but a little finish damage, and was still zeroed.

  8. I had a sight do this once but it would flop vertically from recoil, a MOJO sight. Sent it back no problems afterwards.

Either the leaf spring underneath is sprung not putting enough force on the end of the sight to hold it or its not seated fully or both. The ears could be too small or too large causing the seating issue. Hard to say more. Look closely at those.

Gotta love MOJO and their warranty. Just ordered a Micro-click for my Saiga, and have one on my Mosin and SKS already. Talk about an improvement. :) I highly recommend them as an upgrade.

I had "rear sight floppage" on my SKS, and simply used a C-clamp to compress the ears with the sight removed. These sights are not machined to tight tolerances like an M1, so some can be out up to .005" or more.

  9. Kalinka Optics is a great company. When I called about a BP-02 low mount, my biggest question was could you use the irons with the scope removed and the mount still on the gun. The lady on the other end of the line wasn't 100% sure, so she asked someone else. They emailed me a picture of the mount on an AK looking down the sights(which stupid me deleted) the same day.

If you are looking for original milspec AK equipment, Kalinka takes the prize. Yes, they may be a little more expensive than others, but it's worth it. :super:

  10. Good post, Boomsick42. I'll add what my FFL asked me when I started looking:

"Are you looking for a factory new rifle or a mixmaster parts kit assembled by college kids?"

I got lucky and found an Arsenal conversion that was gently used for peanuts. Saigas are about the closest thing you can get to an original AKM, even built on the original Russian tooling. IMHO, they are worth every penny you pay for them.

As far as the DIY conversions, do a forum search. There are several threads around on the how-to and staying 922® compliant.

  11. Remember, comrade, you don't shoot he Mosin, Mosin shoot YOU!!!

I have a '25 Izzy hex receiver, pristine bore, and great shooter. I recently slapped Mojo Microclick on it, and it tightened up my groups considerably. I refinished the stock, as the shop I got it from went gonzo cleaning the cosmo and took most of the shellac with it. Wife bought the butt pad so she could shoot it. She has since bought a Limbsaver slip-on(size medium FYI).

Not bad for a $40 pawn shop find.

Can't speak for the Winchester(only shop carrying it local closed last year), but that Silver Bear will lay a hurting on most North American game. I picked up several cans of Romanian 149gr Silver Tip while AIM had it, and it is more consistent than the ordinary Russian. If you want a well-balanced round(and can still find it), go with the Hungarian 184gr Heavy Ball. I got lucky and found 3 cans at a yard sale.

  12. The problem with the London riots is it wasn't just the "poor" doing the rioting.

    http://www.dailymail...efan-Hoyle.html

The middle class 'rioters' revealed: The millionaire's daughter, the aspiring musician and the organic chef all in the dock

Poverty, social exclusion, poor education - these are just some of the theories put forward to explain the recent rioting.

Yet shockingly, among those in the dock accused of looting are a millionaire's grammar school daughter, a ballet student and an organic chef.

A law student, university graduate, a musician and an opera steward also said to have taken part. They are just some of the youngsters from comfortable middle-class backgrounds who have been charged with criminality. Some of them were arrested at the scene, others handed themselves in after seeing their faces in photographs and on video. Whatever the reasons for their alleged trouble-making, it is clear that their future dreams could be crushed by their moments of madness.

Here are some of those allegedly involved...

Europe is learning the ills of Socialism, just like Mother Russia did in the 90's. Once you run out of other people's money, it's game over.

  13. I'll chime in here finally.

My screen name was given to me by a Porch Creek classmate in high school. My family has Cherokee in it's lineage, and I took most of the Cherokee features. My friend noticed that I didn't run with the "in" crowd and thought for myself. I was always bucking the norm, especially with trends. Since then, this has been both my screen name as well as my CB handle for a time.
