  1. Are there any camp grounds nearby? There is an outside chance that we might be able to drag ourselves down with the trailer. The wife is an old hippie, and part indian too. , she also shoots her S-.410 from the hip!

That's part of what I was going to post once I had info on the hotels. The club has camper facilities w/ power hookups on the property, but I need to check on pricing since I've never used them. Stay tuned!

  2. FYI - For those of you in the Tampa area, On Point firearms expects to have a couple of samples (already sold their allotment) that they will be providing for demo purposes at the St Pete Police Pistol Range in early '08.

If you're on their contact list and local, they invite you to the meet & greet and let you shoot it. Typically, the fee is $20 when they do these events. So if you're interested... it's a cheap way to see and feel it prior to ordering.

He's going to try and make the Florida Saiga Shoot Out in March as well. If his schedule cooperates, we'll have to make sure he brings one of these along.

  3. Why? Does venom dehydrate?

Hemotoxins destroy blood and tissue, which can cause a loss in blood volume and lead to shock. IV fluids help replace the lost blood volume and also provide a delivery system for administering medications. Setting up IVs are pretty standard for medical treatment, a lot of times just as a precaution, but it sounds like this pooch was in pretty bad shape.

Great thread guys, loved the stories. The wife came in when I got to Cobra's story about his dog. She saw the picture of the snake & the dog, so I had to fill her in. The little animal lover actually had a tear come to her eye ;)

  4. I stand corrected...

The GSG-5 has been approved for import by the BATFE and is currently shipping from Germany. The GSG-5 comes in a standard MP5 configuration that many users will be familiar with including a Navy lower receiver, 22rd magazines, A2 stock, triangle (tropical) handguard, and a 16in barrel with a fake sound suppressor attached. An SBR version of the GSG-5 will also be available. Like other HK MP5 clones on the market, the GSG-5 will accept most MP5 accessories. However, German Sport Guns, GmbH is planning to release a whole line of accessories shortly. You'll be able to customize the GSG-5 with German-made collapsible and PDW stocks, Picatinny rail handguards, vertical foregrips, and mounts for optics, flashlights, lasers, Gemtech sound suppressors and more. In short, you'll be able to own the German-made MP5 you've always wanted-- at a fraction of the cost of other clones. And you'll be able to afford to shoot it, thanks to cheap and plentiful .22lr ammunition.
  5. I would love to try my hand at some longer range shooting afterwards. Probably won't be very good at it and don't have much experience but I've wanted to try Manatee out for a while. So long as you can put up with a newbie, you're on!

    Would love to!

Leaving the 1000 yd range out of the picture, the public range still goes out to 565. There's clays, gongs, groundhogs, & tons of other stuff out that far, aside from any paper we put out. Anything past 400 yds gets fun when the wind is blowing. Just pack your favorite match ammo or hand loads & we'll have a ball...and probably pick up a few pointers from the guys out there.

And there's no reason at all to feel like a newb; no matter the discipline, every one of us started out at some point and still learns something new every time we go out. The great thing about shooting is that while it can be competitive, there aren't any secrets that those "in the know" aren't willing to share to help push you to the next level. There's always those rare exceptions, but for the most part, it's a sport where we share and learn from each other. Each is expected to do thier own homework as it contributes to the whole, but whether your asking a question here on this board or seeking advice at your local range, we all help where we can.

Beyond that, opinions and styles vary, so take it all in and filter as appropriate to what it takes for you to get on target ;)

  6. All of us??? U sure bout dat? Even with guns around??? What about Saiga SISTERS?

No question about it, we'd love to have you AND any Saiga Sisters!

But, since you brought the subject up, I think that the title of Saiga Biatch may very well be transferred if a "Brother" is outshown by a "Sister" on the field of battle. Not that I am advocating a passing of the torch, but you know how things go and that bygones sure as hell won't be bygones ;)

  7. Oh yeah, I'll be there, I've got a bunch of stuff not sure what to bring other than a stock Saiga-12 and the RAK 12 I should have by then. I have lots of hand guns and a Remington 700 in 30-06, not sure what folks would be interested in...

    Hey Glocker,

Glad to have you join us!

I say bring anything along you want to shoot. Even if you don't break something out at the main event, you can still hit the public range since your fees will be paid for the day...only the 1000yd range is extra ($5 IIRC). I'll have my Rem 700 (in .308) out there as well if you want to bring yours and stay for a visit to the public range to do a bit of shooting at distance.

Who knows, if the March winds are blowing during the event we could set up a couple of helium-filled ballons at 50 yds or so, with one valid target, for those with precision rifles.

  8. A civillian legal imported supressor ?

    didn't think that was possible.

I'd like this gun more if mags were as cheap and availible as 10/22 mags.

I'll have to check on that. I'm pretty sure Evan said GSG would be making it, but I could be wrong. In any event, one is in the works.

BTW, GSG is only going to offer one factory config to simplify the import process, but after that, there will be all sorts of options. And OnPoint will begin operating on a membership plan starting in January that will make all this much easier on the wallet. Basically, everything he has access to from his 20 or so distributors will be available at his actual cost. From what he told me this week, memberships will run about $4.95/month...not a bad deal.

  9. Thanks vjor and Bvamp...you guys did a great job summing everything up.

Like vjor said, we have Area 51 reserved for the day, and this isn't your typical range with paper targets. Area 51 is the land of dynamic targets...cars, appliances, bowling pins, clay pigeons, stuffed animals, basically anything the club gets their hands on or can come up with that's cool to shoot up. And yes, for the traditional folks who want to shoot paper, we will still have access to target frames.

They're doing a bit of renovating on Area 51 right now, but I'll snap a few photos this weekend and post them here to give you guys some visuals on our facilities for the day. I'll also get the prices on tannerite & other dynamic targets that will be available at the range.

This outing is going to be a great time, so feel free to join us for the day...even if you don't have a Saiga. Safety is always the number one priority, so there will be an adequate ratio of NRA Certified Range Safety Officers on hand. Not to worry though, they want us to have a good time too, just as long as that good time doesn't run the risk of ruining the day for you or someone else.

BTW, spectators are welcome as well. If you just want to come by just to watch and socialize, please feel free to do so. I'll have the "spectator only" price up by next weekend.

  10. Just got this this morning from Onpoint...THE AD NOT THE GUN...I wish...

    http://www.onpointsupply.com/cart.php?page..._22lr_mp5_clone

Hold tight! Evan (aka OnPoint) has some changes to his business model coming in Jan that will make this deal even sweeter...much, much sweeter.

Beyond that, he told me this week that in addition to all the cool aftermarket "MP5 Clone" accessories, there will be a suppressor from GSG not too far down the road.

  11. The kit I'm talking about makes it physically impossible to backfeed the line when you are using the generator. It is an approved product/method for safely connecting a generator to an existing panel. It meets code in every jurisdiction that I'm familiar with.

The interlock, properly installed, solves that problem so long as the cover is on or closed (although iirc some kits attach to the interior of the panel and work when the cover is off).

You got me wondering with this one, so I called my electrician buddy who did my setup. He said interlocks like the one you pictured meet the National Electical Code & National Fire Protection Code, but still recommends getting at least a two-pole double throw switch. Admittedly, he said the interlocks will work as intended in the vast majority of cases where the panel is in good condition, but there are still fault conditions that could create a backfeed situation. Which not only could electricute someone, but potentially destroy your generator when power is restored.

He's a good friend of mine & not trying to make any money here...that's just his take on them. YMMV

  12. FYI, it is much cheaper and easier to back feed your panel and use a generator interlock kit.

Kit costs about $50, and can be installed in about 30 min. Then you'd just need an exterior outlet to plug your generator into.

And yes, it all should meet code ;)

I apologize continuing to head of topic here, but you have to be extremely careful with kits like these. Will they connect your generator cheaply and give you power? Absolutely! But the problem is whether or not every wire, including the neutral, gets completely disconnected from the power grid when you switch to generator power. If not, you're risking energizing downed wires and putting utility workers, emergency responders, kids who can't resist checking out the damage, etc at risk when you power up your generator. And transformers work in reverse, so if the current you're pumping out hits one of those, there'll be upwards of 13,000 volts running through the "dead" lines on the other side. This is why they use transfer switches to connect generators to the electrical panel, so my advice is to spend the money and have the system installed correctly and safely by a licensed electrician.

Termite - that's a hell of a price for that generator. Nice find

  13. +1 on the design and quality of materials. I have the SpecOps stock on my 590, and it is nice with the heavier loads. The are some downsides I've found though:

    - You have to remove the stock to dissasemble the shotgun

    - Normal allen wrenches aren't the easiest thing for removing the stock...their ball end wrench works great though

    - The cheek weld was higher with this stock and I had to replace the bead sight with a ghost ring setup

  14. You're probably right Bvamp, but the 911 tape doesn't tell everything...there was an officer on scene at the time of the shooting, and I don't believe his first-hand account has been made public yet.

Point in case, I've know of situations where officers have fired their weapons and all the bullets struck the perp in the back. Suspect, hell yes! Did it get the neighborhood riled, absolutely! Was the officer justified...yes, because of the circumstances. In one case, the suspect charged an officer with a broken bottle and turned away the moment the officer drew and fired, with each impact turning his back more towards the officer. In another, the suspect had a firearm and was about to fire on another officer. In both cases, the media focused on the fact the suspect had been shot in the back, drawing an undue amount of media attention. When we hear someone being hit in the back, it sends an automatic message of an unjustified use of force, but it just isn't the case in every instance.

I'm not saying this guy was legally justified, but we just don't have all the facts at this point. Best case scenario though, he has an uphill battle now that his statements recorded on tape have been made public.

  15. And does anyone know if he knew these guys hadn't already offed his neighbors before running off? You can't know what was going through his mind so I'll wait to make a legal judgment call.

You are absolutely on the mark. There are a lot of "unknowns" in this case, even after you listen to the 911 tapes. We don't know what happened inside the neighbors house, how the confrontation in the yard went down, or how half a dozen other things took place.

BUT, this guy did protray himself on the 911 tapes as wanting to stop these guys however he could, and he did nothing to hide the fact he was willing to shoot to kill. I'm not arguing whether the a$$holes deserved it or not, I personally could care less they were killed in the commission of a home robbery. IMO, what he did wrong was stay on with the 911 operator WAY TOO LONG and say WAY TOO MUCH!

He would be much better off if he had just reported the break in, gave the address, and said "Oh my God, they're coming on my property, get someone here now..." <click>

    Dead men tell no tales!

  16. What pisses me off is all the folks like Quanell X that jump into the fray to spew out a bunch of crap about the "rights" that were violated while someone was committing a felony. It's about damn time more of us start standing up and saying WTF!

In this country illegally = no rights

Committing a felony = no rights

In prison for any of the above = no rights

Something bad happens to you while you have "no rights"...deal with it, it's YOUR problem, NOT ours! The fact is you did something (most likely violent) against someone you shouldn't have done; so you don't have the right to sue for damages, free health care, cable-tv in prison, or anything else for that matter.

Back to the guy who shot the burglars, I listened to the tape and it does sound like he's on thin ice with the self-defense argument. Do I have a problem with them being killed, no, but the fact is even an LEO (on or off duty) would be facing some serious issues on this one. But, I see what this guy did and what happened to the "would be" robbers as seperate issues...no reason to mix the two in an attempt to diminish the crime these two illegal aliens were committing.

That said, I'm now stepping down from the soap box :excl:

  17. Sweet. I haven't gotton an e-mail confirmation yet, but that makes me feel better. Can't wait!

I was also assuming they are shipping according to when the order was placed. The gal I spoke with said they would send as many as they could out on Thursday, but there would be some that would ship on Friday.

Not to worry, either way, everyone that had one reserved will have them in short order ;)

  18. Anyone who has pre-ordered heard anything from Gilberts about shipping yet? I'm just wondering about the state of things, and don't want to call them up and bother them (I bet they're getting alot of calls right now)

I broke down and ordered two 109's with Gilbert's over the phone on Tuesday. The good news is the UPS shipment notification e-mail arrived just a few minutes ago, so yours should be headed your way as you read this :super:

  19. if you have that itch then try a gun show they usally have at least 2 s-12s

I've seen at least a few in the last several shows I've been at in FL over the last few months, but they have been way overpriced and the converted guns were questionable at best.

Still, the occasional deal is out there, I just haven't run into one.

  20. I hear ya bro! It's a case where we just have to wait the situation out.

This strikes me as being very similar to when I was looking for a Kel-Tec PLR-16. The buzz was out there that "Kel-Tec isn't producing enough to meet demand," "everyone is buying them because the ATF is going to ban them," "if you find one, you better buy it regardless of price," blah, blah, blah. I was patient, kept my eyes open, and finally found one well below the going prices. I don't see this situation as being much different.

Stay vigilant and we'll both be proud owners in the near future, and I might add without paying $600 or more. To me, the wait is the price you pay for having an extra $150 or so to spend on a conversion, ammo, or other things you want to customize it.

  21. I received this earlier today and found it to be a great read and an appropriate topic for today. Billy Goldfeder's messages usually don't hold much for those outside the fire service community, but I found this one to be something most of us can appreciate so I thought I would share it with everyone. Plus, it includes a few facts about December 7th I didn't realize before today.

    Enjoy

    Hey...

Today is a rough day for many Americans and Firefighters, even if you didn't realize it. While some others might barely remember why, we remember. If you were around on Dec. 7, 1941, you will definitely never forget what the date means and how it impacted our nation. Today is Pearl Harbor Day. Remembering the attack at Pearl Harbor is directly remembered by fewer each year...as the "greatest generation" continues to pass on. The attack on Pearl Harbor left a toll of 2,388 dead and 1,178 wounded...including Firefighters (read on)....and pushed the United States into World War II.

We had a chance to again visit Pearl Harbor just a few weeks ago-and it is clear that in Hawaii, the attack and those who lost their lives, has NEVER been forgotten. We were privileged to see Pearl Harbor through the private words and eyes of a wonderful and very proud Federal Fire Department (Hawaii) Battalion Chief...who, when showing us around, continued to use the words "OUR history" and "OUR Nation"...his message was clear to us. Pearl Harbor happened to us. Everyone of us.

It's 2007 and we are at war now as well. In WW2, it wasn't just the soldiers who went to war-EVERYONE got involved and made a difference to protect our Country-and defeat the enemies. Today we need to remember those who served, those who were lost and those who survived the attacks in 1941. We must keep their memory alive as a reminder that they paid the highest price for OUR freedom. And we also must remember the young women and men who are serving overseas-today-right now as you read this stuff, they are serving you and I.

During the Pearl Harbor attack. 3 Engine Companies of the Honolulu (Hawaii) Fire Department, (Engines 1, 4, and 6) were dispatched to fight the fires caused by enemy attack. HFD Fire Captain John Carreira, Captain Thomas Macy and Hoseman Harry Pang all gave their lives in the Line of Duty. 6 other Firefighters were wounded while fighting fires at Hickam Field: Fire Lt. Frederick Kealoha, Hosemen Moses Kililikani, John A. Gilman, Solomon Naauao, Patrick McCabe and George Correa. All of these Firefighters were awarded Purple Hearts and became the only civilian Firefighters in the U.S. to do so.

Freedom includes the right to feel what you wish regarding our current military deployment. But either way and no matter what, we must very aggressively and proactively protect our freedom from attacks by the known and unknown enemies. The enemies who plan and would love to take it away from us...and would do so in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, those who hate what we have, what we stand for, what we believe in and how we live as Americans, offer us no options.

  22. The update is much appreciated Mike.

We're all dying to get our hands on the drums, but I commend you for taking the time to make sure we're all kept in the loop. And the extra cover for those of us who have been waiting was also a very nice touch. Unexpected given the pre-order discount price, but very much appreciated!
