Hawk451 2,230
Finally made it out to the range Sunday. Had the soggy 50 yard range to myself for a couple hours. Guide Gun & what I call my Geezer Gun: A/A 30 carbine for H/D during bad flare-ups when running Saiga-12 is iffy. I know, need a light on the carbine & slings on both. There's a ton of stories about the 30 carbine being ineffective; I'm convinced that most of those stem from use beyond 300 yards. It is NOT a Garand. Audie Murphy & Jim Cirillo were both very fond of it. That's plenty of endorsement for me. Tried out some Prvi 405 gr softpoints in the Guide Gun. Recoil wasn't significantly more (to me, anyway) than Winchester 300 gr JHP. Factory ballistics read as 405 meters per second ('bout 1330 FPS) Haven't yet exhumed my chronograph, so I can't confirm velocity. Seems rather anemic. 30 yards rapid-fire (low-ready with safety on, roughly 6 seconds for 5 shots [forgot the timer, too]) 300 gr JHP 405 gr SP Ran out of staples, too... For bear defense, I'd think these would work for your average Black Bear. I'd want my S-12 with 3" Black Magic Brennekes (600 gr hard, sharp-edged slug) for dissuading big Brownies or get a 458 Lott for picking fights with 'em. Sidearms that made the trip; Roscoe, BUG & Plinker. Geco 45 ACP & 22LR were both tested & found to be completely reliable & otherwise unremarkable. Got in requisite freestyle, strong hand & weak hand practice. Also reload drills with magazines & speed-strips. Need more practice. Always. Carbine seems to automatically hit whatever I'm aiming at whether its Mozambique's & non-standard responses on an IPSC target at 3 yards or water bottles at 50 yards. It just DOES NOT like Wolf steel-cased ammo. Completely reliable with Prvi & Remington FMJ & SP. Expended roughly 20 rounds of 38 Special, 100 rounds 22LR, 150 rounds 45 ACP, 200 rounds 30 carbine & 80 rounds 45-70. My right shoulder still has the most delicious little twinge.
