  1. 01/06/14 UPDATE: Price dropped to $50 shipped.

01/02/14 UPDATE: Posting this on the Vepr Forum too now. Guys, this is a steal! Chaos had this rail at $85 + shipping over the holidays and I priced mine here to match that (-used item), but Chaos is back selling these at $99.99. Also, this thing doesn't even have a single major scratch on it. I even cleaned and lightly oiled it for you!

I am selling this used Chaos tri-rail will all the hardware. It definitely has signs of use, but is in overall great condition. Because Chaos rails are modular, you can get a top or extended top rail from them and turn this into a full quad.

    Official product description:

“Made for Saiga 12, the Chaos Tri Rail System is manufactured to highest standards in the industries. Our MIL-STD-1913 rails are made from aircraft grade 6061 aluminum alloy. Hard coat military specification MIL-A-8625 or Type III non-reflective black. Weight: 10 oz.”

One caveat: It has a weaver sling adaptor attached to it (see pics) and the set screw which holds it in place is stripped, making it impossible to remove without tools. I thought about drilling or dremelling into the thing and removing it, but decided that someone might actually want that thing on there and think of it as a bonus. It shouldn’t be hard to remove if you don’t want it though.

ASKING PRICE: $55 $50 (shipped via USPS First Class with insurance and delivery confirmation to the 48 Continental States)

Payment: verified PayPal only, please. The rail will be shipped the next business day after payment is received (and cleared), using USPS with insurance and delivery confirm. I will provided you the tracking info ASAP. I ship fast and overdo it with the packaging.

  2. UPDATE2: SOLD

    UPDATE: SPF

I am selling this lightly used scope mount for the Vepr Super models equipped for such mounts. This mount will NOT work with the AK side-rail equipped Verp Supers, which don't have the little top mount rails on both sides of the receiver, next to the rear trunnion.

I had to sell my Vepr Super and this was my  second, “backup” mount. It does have a few scuffs and scratches on it - typical Russian enamel finish, but is in perfect working order. I’ve never bent the locking lever on this one. It does come with the original Molot 1” scope rings, but honestly, they are trash. They are not tight enough for 1” tubes and need to be shimmed, but also definitely aren’t 30 mm rings.

ASKING PRICE: $130 (shipped via USPS First Class with insurance and delivery confirmation to the 48 Continental States)

Payment: verified PayPal only, please. The mount will be shipped the next business day after payment is received (and cleared), using USPS with insurance and delivery confirm. I will provided you the tracking info ASAP. I ship fast and overdo it with the packaging.

Would like sell this lightly used, high end Belorussian POSP scope, which I bought from Kalinka. It's not in stock right now, but they had it listed as:

"POSP 4-10x42 D VariPOSP Zoom Rifle Scope w/ Adjustable Illuminated 1000 m Dragunov Reticle and Independent Focus, Weaver Version"

    Here's the official product description:

The POSP 4-10x42 D wit is a high quality sniper rifle scope with a magnesium alloy body and fully multi-coated
optics. A great assault weapon scope with a 1000 m Dragunov marked metering
grid, this illuminated reticule grid scope allows you to determine kill distance
as well as to track and observe game in the field. This sight's defining feature
is an independent focusing eyepiece which operates similar to a pair of
binoculars. The diopiter adjustment allows you to focus clearly when firing at
close range, to adjust for your specific eyesight and simply to give you the
clearest picture possible. Illumination is provided by a LED bulb. The special
design of the scope allows for both lateral and angular adjustments quickly and
easily so you always stay zeroed in. It features professionally ground, crystal
clear optics, nitrogen filling to prevent lens fogging, and larger diameter
tubes for improved light gathering under the most severe conditions. Probably
the best scope, dollar for dollar, in the world. It is waterproof and can be
used in any climate condition. It comes with a high quality mil-spec black
finish, and comes with everything shown in the picture; rubber lens cap, eye
piece, screw driver and nylon carrying case. If you want the look and
performance of a true POSP and place a premium on shooting comfort, this is your
best choice. The Weaver POSP is perfect for use on the .308 versions which
require longer range reticles to make full use of their capabilities. The POSP
series uses standard, readily available watch batteries.

I paid $400 + shipping for it. Kalinka's Canadian sister company has this thing in stock, for $485. This is the high end of the POSP line of scopes.

The scope comes with an unused original rubber eye piece, nylon camo case (with internal pockets), Russian instruction manual, batteries and a couple of unused cleaning kits.

The scope has barely been used and is in great working condition. It's rugged, clear and cool looking. The only thing that's wrong with it, is a cosmetic scuff/scratch on the right side of the tube, near the objective. Please, see the last picture! It's not deep and in the picture, it looks worse that it actually is. It's something that can easily be covered up with touch-up pen or even a marker.

ASKING PRICE: $350 (shipped via USPS Priority Mail with insurance and delivery confirmation to 48 Continental US states)

Payment: verified PayPal only, please. The scope will be shipped the next business day after payment is received (and cleared), using USPS with insurance and delivery confirm. I will provided you the tracking info. I ship fast and overdo it with the packaging.

  4. Ok, so my buddy and I just put a hundred rounds through his 91 GI and it went flawless. This is a second generation PTR 91. It ate up all the ammo we threw at it. I had no difficulty with the sights, but I suppose I could see how some people would. It was fun to shoot and we were able to get 3 inch groups at 100 yards benched with a crappy bushnell scoop. I enjoyed shooting it and it cemented my desire to get one. A local shop has two and I'm going to put on layaway. PTR also has a little attachment that eliminates the brass coming out beat to shit. I think its a win win situation for a .308.

The GIs are supposed to be less picky about the ammo at the expense of some accuracy. Still, I would pick a nice Saiga or Vepr 308 build over a PTR91 every time. Another bad aspect of the PTR91 is the weight - almost 10 lbs! The dirt-cheap mags are nice though. Here's my baby S308:

Wouldn't trade her for any other battle rifle... at least nothing that's within the same price range.

  5. have you talked to him to see if he can ship to U.S. ? maybe offer a group buy, I am down to get the basic one, let me know and we will work on it.

No. Haven't e-mailed him yet. Before I plop any more dough into my Super, I want to make sure that I can get the damn top mount to quit working itself loose after a few shots. I am currently trying a new config, with the "quick release" lever on the left side. It looks promising, but I need to take the rifle to the range and test it out. If that doesn't work out, I will contact another dude in Russia, who makes a solid "always-on" mount (with clearance for removing the receiver cover) and see if he will ship his product to the US. His guns.ru forum thread says that the weight for that product now extends into 2014.

I am also wondering if the Ronin's Grips guy would consider doing a group order for polymer Super stocks. It seems like a good project for him.

  6. I discovered this on guns.ru forums.

This guy Dmitry in Novosibirsk, who has been doing this for a while and is reputable, makes custom polymer stocks for all kinds of guns, including the Vepr Super.

    Here's his basic one:

  7. A good friend of mine used to own a nice PTR91. It proved to be extremely picky about ammunition (it just refused to cycle specific .308/7.62 mm NATO rounds, period) and we just couldn't get a very nice, expensive optics mount to stay in place without movement (was impossible to zero a scope). He also didn't particularly like the feel and ergonomics of the weapon. The fact that it didn't group any better than my S308, was the last straw. He sold that rifle.

  8. Hey guys. I have a Verp Super and a buddy of mine has a regular 308 with the front sight integrated into the gas block (v. 02). Both guns came with the sights horizontally "dead on", but after my buddy installed a CSS aluminum hand-guard, it changed his barrel harmonics and now his gun is shooting a bit to the left of PoA. We tried to fix this by using a typical AK sight adjustment tool (UTG, I believe), but it didn't work, seemingly because the cylindrical sight base on the rifle is slightly larger than the round hole on the sight adjustment tool. Cursory fitting showed that my Super seems to be the same way - the sight base cylinder doesn't fit into the hole on the tool. I have successfully used this sighting tool to adjust the sights on my S308 and my SGL21 before. This leads me to believe that the sight base diameter on my buddy's Vepr 308 v. 02 and my Vepr Super 308 are slightly larger.

Has anyone run into the same problem? Should I try another brand of sighting tool or maybe slightly enlarge the diameter of the hole on this UTG tool by using a round file or something? I would rather not result to the punch and hammer method and risk scuffing a nice weapon. Danke.

  9. here is some pics, since my rifle has been sitting dismantled on my desk for months waiting for that RSA Trigger group..

    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/62698803/Rifle/2013-05-17%2013.17.16.jpg

and in relation to the action

    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/62698803/Rifle/2013-05-17%2013.21.51.jpg

I will add that I am still able to turn mine a smidgen, maybe less than a quarter of a turn, in theory it should not budge.

Thanks again. I probably scratched up the action, dug into the wood and made my stock loose, trying to "tighten it" a few turns. Me and my freakishly strong hands, combined with impatience, and perfectionism. Should have gotten all the answers BEFORE messing with the "mysterious screw". :(

  10. if your turning the slotted side your turning the hole bolt. so the flat side of the bolt could be facing any random direction. if the action is in the stock when your doing this then the stock is extremely sloppy as you should not be able to turn it with any amount of ease. the nut with two holes is the only part that should be able to be tightened with the action in place.

so based on that you may need to bed the action.

Thanks. I am still having difficulty picturing how all this fits. I think that I need to remove the stock this weekend... see how everything works.

  11. looks like it doesn't matter, side mount, top mount, these rifles have mount issues.... sucks nobody makes good mounts here in the USA, there is no way anybody is gonna ship anything from good old Russia for us.

I've had good experience with orders from Russia and Belarus before. I am fluent in Russian. I might just contact that Tarenkov guy and inquire if he would be willing to ship his mount to the US, how much, etc. He's not quite as backed up on orders/production as I initially thought... the wait looks to be around 1-2 months for most people.

  12. Hmm... I held the nut with the two holes in place and tightened the nut with with a slot using a big flat screw driver, it went quite a bit inside the stock before it got tight. Am I doing it wrong? I've never taken off the stock and have no idea idea how this cross-bolt interacts with the action inside there.

  13.

I've spent a lot of time searching and browsing guns.ru (the biggest Russian gun forum) and other Russian forums, reading about the Vepr Super, which they lovingly call the "Super-Swine" (Vepr means "wild boar" in Russian) and other fun variations of thereof. This is the main (biggest) Vepr Super owners discussion thread:

    http://forum.guns.ru/forummessage/56/11.html

The general consensus is that the Molot top mount is a POS/PITA and a lot of these guys had just given up on trying to use mag optics with this rifle, and when hunting, compensate for the lack of aiming precision with rapid fire, doing crap like unloading on a tightly packed herd of deer from 450 yards. They also use .308 to hunt birds like geese and grouse. LOL. A lot of their hunting ethics (or a lack of thereof) are very questionable to me.

Any way, in 2009, a guy named Tarenkov, who goes by ShOOter59 on guns.ru, came up with this custom steel mount:

    http://forum.guns.ru/forummessage/54/485382.html

It's designed to tightly and securely affix to the rear sight base and not to interfere with removing the dust cover, field-stripping and cleaning the weapon. The general consensus is that this is the best scope mounting option available. Unfortunately, this Tarenkov guy runs a pretty small shop and is back-logged with orders a year ahead or so. Thought I'd share...

    http://www.germanguns.de/export/optics/mounts/hkmounts/MolAMont9902.jpg

I knew I saw this before, according to this German site it was designed for the Supers up until 2000. question is why?

I believe that this old style mount didn't hold in place so well, so they came up with the current three point attachment style. The Tarenkov mount apparently stays in place and is made out of steel too.

EDIT: Some mods that a guy did to the Molot mount, to make it keep zero after removal and re-installation:

    http://forum.guns.ru/forummessage/2/128346-2.html

He welded something onto the bottom of the mount and also moved the locking lever to the left, which apparently you can do.

  15. I didn't have any issues with mine working loose, I put 60 rounds down range in one session without any hiccups. One thing to point out, like the guy in the review, my Objective is very large, as a result I have to crank it down, loosen nut and move the lever upward, tighten, crank down, etc.. its a royal PITA. the upside its nice when its in place down side not easy to remove and replace when you need to get under the cover. I still have the idea of modifying a quick release for a bike seat. eventually I will get to it, working on some other projects atm like making my own version of a laminate stock.

The way that you do this, do you keep your zero when removing and reinstalling the mount for cleanings? I wonder if I get movement from recoil because I bent my lever to clear the scope objective and it now doesn't neatly tuck in between the barrel and the stock and instead, just sticks out to the side. I was going to cut a chunk off, to make it stick out less. I also have another new, unmodified mount. I might try things your way, though I really like to have that quick-release option. It seems like the Russians designed this mount to properly work only with small optics, such as red dots and compact, low-magnification scopes. It kind of sucks. :( They could've come up with a better system.

  16. recoil.

Hey, guys. I took my Super out to get sighted in with a scope for the first time today. As I mentioned in the topic, it's the top mount version. I had modified the lock/release lever on the mount by bending it away from the gun, in order to make it clear a 40 mm scope objective.

It took me less that 10 rounds to get a pretty good zero at 25 yards. However, I had began to notice a problem: after a few shots, the locking lever would end up about 15 degrees up from the "locked" position. This didn't make much of a difference from a short range, but when I moved up to 100 yards, I saw a problematic pattern: I would shoot a nice, 1-1.5 inch three round group, but the next shot would be a few inches away from that group, the shot after that would be right next to that one, the subsequent shot would be a few more inches off, etc. Basically, the POI seemed to correspond to the movement of the mount locking lever, which would begin to move up after the first few shots and continue to loosen up with the subsequent ones.

This was rather frustrating and agitating. After getting back from the range, I began to do some research on this matter. I came upon this review on the Vepr Super top mount on Kalinka Optics (http://kalinkaoptics.com/review/product/list/id/693/):

"Having used one of these hunting and target shooting mounted on my .308 for many years, I love this mount. I use a 54MM objective for light-gathering purposes, so the quick release is not used. Once I get a scope zeroed in, I lock-tite everything anyway. The quick release would work itself loose at first and touch my scope. Had to have it as tight as could be and lock it down. After that, it was years of service with no problems. This mount enables a perfectly centered scope over the Super Vepr, and I am a perfectionist. The cover must be made to accept the mount, so make sure before you buy. Between the scope, the mount, and the SV: you simply must be off target to miss."

As far as I understand, this guy's mount also comes loose, but he bypasses the quick-release lever altogether and loc-tites the screws in place. This seems like PITA to me. I like the quick release - being able to remove the scope and clean the gun, without having to worry about lining everything up and loc-titing it back together.

If the lock and release lever on these mounts generally tends to work itself loose, I think that it's a serious design flaw, which makes me question my purchase of this Vepr Super 308. Have any of you guys with the top scope mount model of the Super 308 experienced the same problem (or not)? Am I missing something here? Any thoughts or input on this would be appreciated. Thanks for reading.

    UPDATE:

I read the Russian Vepr Super manual today. It tells you to make sure that the screw on the left side of the mount is tightened all the way before you shoot. My screw was pretty loose. I went ahead an tightened it as far as it will go. I am hoping that this will fix the problem, but I am not too hopeful. I get the feeling that the lever will still work itself loose, but it will just take more shots now. I don't know... we'll see.

  17. I finally had a chance to take my Arsenal Super 308 target shooting today. I was hoping to zero the irons and my scope, but got distracted with my buddy's shit and only had time for the irons.

I was shooting surplus German 7.62 mm NATO DAG 150 gr "Silvertip", sitting at a solid table and using one sand bag to support the weapon. Conditions were wet, windy and cold, with my fingers going numb by the end of the shooting session. I was also constantly distracted with my buddy's shenanigans. In addition, I am still getting used to the feel and ergonomics of this weapon. The trigger is a double-stage and feels very similar to the US made one that Arsenal puts on all of their AKs. Not too bad. Recoil still feels very mild, with my round ports.

I don't think that I did too badly, considering the less-than-ideal conditions and the very low radius open sights. Will probably tighten the groups up a bit in the future, but these sights and my aging eyes are always going to be the limiting factor. I was just doing my best to try to hit the middle of the orangy blobs. The contrast on these targets sucked in the lighting conditions too. I will use some higher contrast sights the next time

Here's the first target. The circled group was the first. The weapon was shooting a bit low. The rest of the shots were after a quick vertical sight adjustment. For some reason, I was also shooting a bit to the right, at first, but not later. Did not have to do a horizontal adjustment after all.

    post-10789-0-58707100-1365291787_thumb.jpg

This is my final, zeroed group. At this point, I was getting tired and my fingers were really going numb from the cold. Still managed a 4.5" group, if we discount the "flier" on the right.

Any way, this is probably not too useful. The irons on this weapon should be used as emergency back-up only. I will be zeroing it with a scope next weekend. Then, we will see what this weapon is truly capable of (in my hands).

  18. This is not a pun towards anyone, but no matter what you do, that rifle will never be a "Sniper Rifle" it was never made for that. The AK, IMO, is a spray and pray rifle nothing else, even when Mr. Will, from RJF, took a Saiga put a bull barrel on it (308 rifle) it still only grouped about 3-3.5" I belive @100 yds. Don't get me wrong I thought it was a awesome job Will and the guys did on the weapon, I wish they had used a milled receiver.....

Ask any former or current soldier and they will tell you if you hear an AK you can look up and hunt for it, if you hear a SKS (milled receivers) do not peek.

    Just my 2 cents......

I disagree. New, decent quality AKs can be quite accurate. Most of the time, the weapons that the US soldiers encounter in the field are old, have worn-out, past-life-expectancy barrels and are improperly operated by the people with very little training, as well as (commonly) uncorrected visions problems. The difference between milled and stamped is minimal. SKS' are just harder to wear out because they are not FA. I don't remember RJ mentioning the exact grouping that they got out of that "heavy" build on the show. Unless it was editing, it took the dude 3 shots to dial in on a human silhouette from 1000 yards. That's pretty damn good. 3-3.5" seems average for a regular S308 build. I've gotten much better groups when zeroing my scope using the good loads for the hunting season with my 19" chop down target crown build.

When I first began to shoot my S308 I was pretty disappointed with the groups, which were about 4-5". However, I didn't have any experience shooting semi-auto .308 and my groups began to tighten as I got used to the ergos, increased recoil and noise. I ended up being very pleased with the rifle's performance.

I'll finally be zeroing my Super 308 pretty soon here. I got a nice stockpile of ammo already and also, unlike the .223, 9 mm and 22LR, .308 is locally available and not too overpriced. So far, I've only shot some metal gongs and find the recoil to be pretty minimal. I not very impressed with the available range reports, but I am very curious as far as what I'll be able to get out out of my top mount Super. I consider myself to be a pretty damn good shot right now, so we'll see if the rifle if up to it.
