  1. Unfortunately giving up the LRBHO is the trade off for the adapter to be able to go back and forth between AR and AK mags.

Vlad... mind if we use your video on our site?

    Sure you can use it...

you make a great product.. and if you take your time and install it correctly.. the results are very strong..

  2. I've considered trying out an MSA adapter with my S223. I've already modded 10 or 12 Circle 10 mags though. I suspect they'd be a bit sloppy if I had the trunnion milled down. By the way, what rig are you wearing?

the adapter is awesome... plentiful cheap AR 15 mags..

the rig is tactical taylor.. LOVE IT.. good for run and gun.. carries all I need.. can set it up however you want..

  3. Understood. I got rid of my AR's (which aree fine rifles) because I favor the AK platform. I got more rifles and had money left over for some more ammo.

To each his own, I guess.

without making this an AR VS AK thread... I make hits at 300 yards with a 14in AR... I never had as much luck with the AK.. but I will say the 556 AK was far closer to that performance when compared to the 7.62 which I do not care for at all anymore..

  4. Interesting. Why did you decide to sell it?

in an effort to standardize my collection of firearms.. I kept the Saiga 12.. I love the platform.. but I just can't justify having multiple mid range rifles... I am likely doing a 300 BLK SBR AR.... so something had to go to fund that project..

I am sad to sell it... but really impressed with it... thing runs really well..

  5. Ya know it's really hilarious actually... HOW MANY Saigas or AKs has ANYONE seen on the 'used' market....with the mods done to accept and use the MSA / TAKD adapter? WELL??? Seriously I mean it... how many? I know I sure haven't seen any myself. Wonder why that is.... hmmmm....shocked.gif

Maybe... just maybe something like this (STICKIED IN THE .223 AND TAKD SECTIONS BTW) is what it will take to eliminate all the misguided and mundane threads we keep seeing posted by naysayers...OVER AND OVER AND OVER good GOD MAN!! <goes back away from .223 section again for awhile...> eyes_droped.gif

Well gee... out of the MILLIONS of x39 AK's in the world.. how many 223/5.56's do you see for sale on the used market? Hmm? I don't see many. So there lies your answer. The 223/5.56 is ALREADY the minority. Add to that an even LESSER minority (adapter for AR mags) and you get the gist. So out of MILLIONS of x39's, THOUSANDS of .223/5.56's, and maybe HUNDREDS of 223/5.56's with adapters... it's no surprise you don't see any on the used market. Availability is NEVER a guage of quality.. it is a guage of RARITY. That's not to say it's not a quality mod... it's just a RARE one.

I am selling my 556 saiga... not because I dont love it... but I just need to fund another project... sad to see it go.. but choices have to be made..

  6. Awesome responses !

Vlad , that's an awesome setup -- are those mounted on an Intrafuse handguard ? And can you recommend me a good light ?

I had a truglo hologram red dot/green dot on my wasr and liked it .. but they are pretty cheap I should save for an aimpoint

it is a Kvar AK handguard with an Ultimak rail.. and as pointed out a VLTOR offset light mount.. it is quick release... the light is a standard surefire.. not even LED... I purchased most of my surefire lights before the whole LED crazy... it works just fine and has held up well...

I have not switched to LED because for my purpose the light in plenty bright enough.. but any surefire light is good.. I hear good things about fenix as well but have no personal experience..

the goal of my gun is to be light and fast.. when you hold the handguard your thumb is right near the light.. and it is all tight to the gun so you are not snagging all all these goofy extra parts sticking off..

    simple and fast..

  7. I think lasers at interior home defense range on a carbine are ridiculous....

I run a light on my AR and AK for low/no light shooting... I run the lights tight to the handguard so my thumb is right there... fast.. and useful... when I shine my light on a target at interior home defense ranges.. the center of the light is pretty much a center mass hit... shine light on center mass of target.. shoot.. hit.. no need for a laser...

get a GOOD light.. not some cheap junk..

if you want REALLY fast target acquisition run a light and a red dot..

  8. Seeing as two posts already went to "The Shithole" and deleted over the same lets keep this one civil. I think we can all agree there is a different driving force behind what each of us do with our Saigas. Jerry52 is new and may not understand the history of beating dead horses here. IF he sees it, he sees it. If not, then no worries. We all love our hobby....

This public service announcement was brought to you by beer. beer.gif

    Have a safe Labor Day!

no... I mean dead horse or not.. I do NOT get it...

under a $100 bucks.. and a few hours of my time.. and I can use cheap.. reliable.. readily available magazines... on top of that they drop free making mag changes faster..

$30 per I can use any one significantly rarer magazine system that is compatible with hardly anything common..

Show me a logical reason to stick with either uncommon saiga specific magazines.. or foreign produced expensive significantly more rare magazines that require modification to work...

It is not like you can buy a dozen galil magazines and just use them out of the box... you are modifying either way.. why not modify for a cheaper drop free common magazine system..

I am tired of hearing this nonsense because there is NO logical reason to do something like that...

  9. 100% with the exception of 3 failures and you hope it holds to gether and you have to add another tweek, but your happy? Boy do I love Guns don't you?

Why not just buy a cheep ar for 600 bucks? I know ,I know Because just because!

Good luck man I hope it works out for you.

I have an AR.. a quality one that I built.. it has over a couple thousand invested in it.. the gun runs great..

and NO.. no failures at this point (not even 3).. I ran another few hundred rounds through both my AR and AR mag equipped Saiga the other day.. both ran flawlessly....

why would it not hold together? I am close to a thousand rounds through it since the cutting of the trunion.. when I painted the gun I also painted the trunion.. I did this so I could observe where the stress is.. the idea is if there is a ton of stress somewhere.. if the trunion were to start to give.. the paint would show it.. it would crack.. or fracture.. there are literally NO signs of stress anywhere.. also when I look at the trunion I notice this.. the trunion is modified way in the rear.. not where the barrel is.. there is still a substantial amount of metal.. and honestly the more I evaluate the operation of the weapon the more I think it is a non issue..

the reason I do not own "just a cheap AR" is because I have purpose built guns that do specific things... the AK project is built with the hopes of being a low maintenance bury it in the ground pull it out and shoot gun.. my AR is pretty durable.. but does require some maintenance.. so far the AK has had ZERO passed its initial cleaning.. I am about 750 rounds in with NO cleaning... I hope to run the gun with zero maintenance for another few months.. to see if it is as reliable as my 7.62 gun was..

sure.. a $1600 AK is not for everyone but if the gun works how I expect it to... it will be worth that to me.. I would rather spend several thousand on a handful of guns that work exceptionally well, and fit every aspect that concerns me.. over having a few beater WASRs.. and a couple of $600 ARs...... my AR lower alone is more than $600...

and honestly.. assuming the modification is completely reliable (it has been for me)

you are an idiot if you can not see the value in utilizing a common inexpensive domestically produced magazine functioning in a drop free magazine system...

I mean how can you not understand...

    *inexpensive magazine

    *abundant magazine choices..

*common magazine with other weapon system

    *drop free design

I can not understand what there is not to like..

  10. another couple hundred rounds through the gun...

no failures... no signs of cracking or stress...

    FLAWLESS operation....

this adapter makes mag changes SO much faster.. that is really one of the biggest bonuses..

  11. that is an amazingly detailed process...

I took an old beat to hell dremel.. a $12 cutting bit.. some oil.. and an afternoon..

no issues.. just a lot of test fitting.. glad it worked out for you..

  12. UPDATE...

MILD chamber bevel.. and when I say mild.. I mean MILD..

    homemade bullet guide...

about 75 rounds.. rapid fire.. rapid mag changes %100 reliability...

no signs of stress or cracking...

    I LOVE this setup..

  13. @Brian Which current design is it you don't like? I am going to invite a few people to voice an opinion on the final design of the BASTARD. Giving the customer a voice in what they want it to look like. I'll offer up 3 designs to choose from and the winner is what will go into production. I'm going to close the MSA forum this week and when the TAKD goes in I will put it up there.

I think that when the new product is available you should probably let me upgrade to it at little to no charge so I can install it.. and take picture of it.. and review it.. people would like that.. hint.. hint..

  14. I totally agree and am glad that option (for AR mags) is out there! It's just that MSA's post made it sound like the new version was a true "bolt on", when in fact it requires dremeling (like the current version). Nothing wrong with that, as people mod their AK's everyday, I just wanted to clarify as to whether it was a true bolt on, or a "mod to fit" (which is the accurate term for both versions). The idea of a true bolt in would lure buyers who would otherwise not buy it (knowing it required rifle modding), so I felt it was important to clear that up.

it is the mags that hit the trunion.. not the adapter... so if you want to use AR mags in a saiga.. you are going to be cutting the gun to some extent no matter what..

  15. My point was that making a new "combined" unit (mag well, trigger guard, AR grip adapter) will not generate any new sales. Those options are ALREADY available to anyone who wishes to make those mods. I think what's limiting (and will always) sales is the "cutting/dremeling" that is required to install. Few people are willing to cut up a functioning rifle to fit mags that are no more reliable than the ones they are currently using, AND add to that their current mags will not fit as securely as they did before. NO go.

I think what people are wanting is a TRUE "bolt on" (NOT "bolt on" + mod the heck out it) conversion that will NOT alter the original rifle in the least.

I think the AK crowd would love to be able to use AR mags... but NOT at the expense of modding their beloved (and 100% reliable) rifles.

Make a TRUE "bolt on" (which means NO dremeling) mag well for AK's, and you'd have pure gold (as the owner could always unconvert back to factory style)!

do you use the MSA adapter?

    * My mags lock rock solid... and the mags I had before are a moot point because the ONLY 556 AK mag was the one I had that came with the Saiga.. which I will likely never even look at again..

    * Once the bullet guide is installed it will be completely reliable (I have had 3 failures and they all revolve around the round not getting chambered.A bg will solve that.. you have to use a bullet guide anyway to use most 556 mag options out there..

    * The cutting milling is minimal... I love it.. we are on a site where people cut the gun to hell to convert it.. and that is common so no one bats an eye.. in fact it is expected... people open up single stack guns to accept double stack mags.. and again.. no one even looks twice.. but modify it for AR mags and the world comes to a screeching halt.. if you have a brain.. and go slowly.. and keep the metal cool.. I really don't see an issue.. granted I don't have much range time with it yet but no kaboom... other people have been running it for a while without issue..

    * AR mags are far faster than AK mags.. that was the draw for me.. a truly drop free mag swap with just the hit of a button...

    * AR mags are cheaper.. and I already own a bunch so $80 on an adapter.. or $80 for three 556 AK mags...

your comments are amusing to say the least because you claim people wont do it because they dont want to mod their guns.. but just about everyone on this site has cut big chunks of metal off of their beloved guns... a saiga in factory form is %100 reliable.. why change it? because it is BETTER.. why cut the magwell? because after it is BETTER..

  16. Prototype2.jpg

What is that thing? ... a combined trigger guard/pg base/magwell??

Something called the B.A.S.T.A.R.D. .... in addition to the above features it will also feature a LRBHO. Designed to use AR Mags, parts and grips. Wipe the bottom of your .223 then bolt this up in place. Plentiful AR parts and accessories with the reliability of the AK Action.

    Bastard adj.

    1. Born of unwed parents; illegitimate.

    2. Not genuine; spurious: a bastard style of architecture.

    3. Resembling a known kind or species but not truly such.

    Bastardize vb

    1. to debase; modify - cause to change; make different; cause a transformation;

When you say "wipe the bottom of your Saiga and bolt this up"... did you forget the "dremel the heck out of it" part, or is this version TRUELY a bolt on?

you will obviously have to remove all the factory parts that are in the way.. then install..

  17. I just noticed that the front lug was contacting one side of the mag by JUST a hair.. I would still lock in.. but there was contact.. so I shaved it a little more.. and now the mags go in even easier.. I wonder if that tension on the mag could cause issue?

    @ vladtepes and/or MSA

So what you are saying is there should be some clearance between the top of the mag and milled surface? I started my install last weekend and since then I probably hit the height 2 - 3 times with the Dremel during the week because was just a shade under. I didn't want to go overboard and take too much off, I figured could always go back and take a little off at a time. Last week I had to give it a good hit to lock it in but now I have it down to a little tap to lock in.

I'm not an AR guy but if I take the same mag (or mags) and put it in the my SU16 all I have to do is push in and it locks very easy, Should the MSA adapter be that easy or should I leave it as to where it only requires a slight tap to lock in? Like I said I had it down to where it now only requires a little bump to lock in and I don't want to remove too much... if I remove anymore material I'm certain I will exceed that suggested .89" height. I installed the bullet guide yesterday and had to trim down the length on the BG fit, that should work nicely, looking forward to testing this weekend.

the mag can either fully seat or it can't... if the mag can fully seat and is not hitting the lug.. then it is fitting.. if it is not.. then it is not fitting..

my mags go in easily and drop free.. but I sanded the adapter a little on the outside in the spots that I shaved the dimples to reduce contact and pressure on the adapter...

  18. Vladtepes, In case my reply was to cryptic. It sounds like a weak spring/follower issue. I know and 20rnd mags can have a weaker spring rate. A BG should resolve.

thanks man.. I just thought you were asking because you thought I had modified magazines..

they are standard 30 round pmags..

but I will go with the bullet guide and call it a day..hopefully that resolves it..

because I love the product.. thanks..
