  1. I saw this AK-105B barrel assembly at K-var. Its 12.5 inches comes with FSB and looks like front trunion, says :Note: Hardware (pins, springs, etc..) are not included. Parts are only pressed on, not drilled and pinned."

Pbviously I would send it to a builder and get the $200 stamp, but what else would I need? I don't want an authentic clone just a practical 12.5" barrel AK-74.

Alternatively what is the shortest one can have the stock barrel using the inexpensive GB/tubes,piston etc? Ie would an AMD front end fit on the barrel, or something else?

I have an SLR-105 and its fine for a range gun but the overall length is a bit rediculous for HD compared even compared to an M4forgery (14.5" + pinned FH.)

    Thanks

  2. I'd rather have a rifle that properly stabilizes the projectile. I shoot all my rifles, save .22LR, out to 600 yards, and this plain ol won't cut it.

This surplus ammo is just dang-gon spooky accurate out of my AR15 - more accurate than my 5.56 AR15 with 77 grain match ammo. :lolol:

Which 5.45 AR do you have?

  3. I've been looking at buying one of these and like everything else I've been researching it to death. I really don't see evedince of these being 1.5MOA rifles in this thread or anywhere else. You need a 10 shot group, and unless you shouldn't have to wait for the barrel to cool down, otherwise you are better served with a Savage bolt gun, no?

I think the real question folks want to know is maxium confident range. One target showed about a 6" group at 200 yards (no barrel cooling). So I think calling them 1.5MOA is a bit misleading to prospective buyers comparing them to an AR10.

I think these are best thought of as sub 400 yard guns that offer better cover penetration that the typical AR & M4, and they are a good value.

  4. Can't decide which one to buy, after the conversion and adding a PSO the price is roughly the same. If the Saiga .308 is at best a 2" MOA gun I would say it would be reckless to use as a DMR over 400 yards. The Rommanian PSL it I've been told reliable as a DMR out to 600 yards, but there are some poor QC and reliability issues with the PSL. The Saiga has a 25 round mag available. The ammo cost are getting to be pretty close.

Probably better off saving for an AR10 type setup ?

  5. I honestly don't understand why these aren't more popular, seem like Pattons favorite battle rifle only 1/3 the price.

If they had a solid source of military grade mags available, I think a lot more folks would have them.

Maybe its the difficulty to attach a brake or flash hider. I searched the posts in this forum and I can't grasp how one would attach a muzzel device withFSB pushed up to the end of the barrel as it comes from the factory..

  6. iv haad a 308 for a couple of years found a 554 for 299 ,use dbut in like new cond.,has a huge scope moubnt on it ,front sight is horibly canted, like it qwas contracted out to century or something.well any feedback is appreciated

Is it a 5.45 Saiga? Does the store have any left?

  7. If I convert and use the Choat dragunov stock I am thinking I could use a FCG from a russian tula kit as 922® wouldn't apply to a dragunov stock?

Would there be any advantage to this? I imagine with all the Tula kits just imported there will be some FCG available, would be nice to have an original russian FCG.

Also is there any convecieable way to put a NDS "Tabuk" style flash hider with 14x1 LH threads on the .308 Saiga?

Last are the new .308 saiga's selling now have the stub FSB or do they have the extra length past the FSB like the x39's do ?

    Thanks,

    Again

  8. There is an extra 'lug' / crossmember on the Saiga 308 near the trunnion.. much like the S-12 has...

If that helps you out any?

    Have a good day.

    Albert

Yea I guess if the 12 guage models are holding up this shouldn't be a problem. Duh. I'm thinking I need to buy one of these as its the closest thing to an SVD with the benefit of using USA available ammo. Understand the conversion is a little different need to study up on that. I honestly don't understand why these aren't more popular, seem like Pattons favorite battle rifle only 1/3 the price.

    Thanks Gentlemen!

  9. The thing holding me back from buying a Saiga .308 is that historically such a powerful cartidge would use the bigger (RPK?) recievers.

Does the current SVD use the same reciever as the Saiga .308?

Have there been any long term abuse studies of the Saiga .308 with regard to reciever flex, cracks, etc?

  10. Has anyone shot the skelotonized stock that doesn't have the trigger moved up? Is it possible to ugrade the trigger group without moving it foward?

Looking at the skelotonized stock available for the converted Saiga it looks like it would have a lower cheeckweld, seems like for a big scope that sits relatively high the non modded skelotonized stock would give a better cheek weld?

  11. There were on sale for $750 shipped so I couldn't turn that down. Kind of glad I went the Arsenal route so I didn't have to worry about tearing up the rifle pulling/pushing the FSB and GB on/off. Its officially the most expensive gun I've ever bough so I think its going to be a safe queen with my SAR-2 being my range toy. I just feel investing in a real russian AK like this is better than putting it in the bank, worse case it loses a couple hundred bucks in value, best case one day I could see these getting reaching todays pre-ban prices.

  12. I have an SGM on my .223. I think it is very well built and suites my needs nicely.

Also was very easy to install.

edit to add: No heat shield to my recollection but the polymer is heavy enough that it is not an issue.

Is it possible to retrofit a heatshield under the SMG forearm?

I really like what you have done to your saiga.

  13. Hey AZG, where in 123 AZ are you. I am in CG.

CK: On the original FSB, does the barrel stop at the muzzle tube/ FSB joint or does it go all the way through? I am afraid to cut too deep into the muzzle tube and damage the barrel. If you have any pics of the barrel after it is removed, that would be greatly appreciated.

CG=Casa Grande? not too familiar with phoenix area. Im near the parker area.

I like how you replaced the FSB bu not the GB, it seems the GB is the last remaining peice for a full conversion out of the realm of the average tinkerer and yours looks great with the factory handgard + ultimak.

One thing I want to make sure I understand is that the pins are in grooves cut into the barrel woth the drill or du the just hold on the new FSB by fiction?

  14. My K-Var floorplates fit properly without being loose and work well on my poly 5.45 mags...to say that they aren't ideal is a bit misleading, unless you're talking about using them on metal 5.45 mags.

I've said nothing misleading. I tried them on several 5.45 polymer mags, and they were loose on them. In contrast, they fit perfectly tight on 7.62x39 and 5.56x45 polymer mags.

They are still usable on the 5.45, though; the looseness is more of an annoyance and not enough to worry about actual function. But the fact that they are loose at all is what makes me say that they are not ideal.

Thats interesting I was planning on spending some bucks to conevert all my 5.45 mags to these USA floorplates to keep my 5.45 as original as possible (when I find one), thanks for the info. Btw the followers grasshopper sells are perfectomondo!
