  1. if there are any sort of nuke throwing going on we are all screwed anyway for about the next 20000 years. EMP pulse without nukes seems unlikely. i think the best way to survive is already be somewhere safe.

I would be more worried about abreakdown of society due to fuel/depression/enemy takeover etc. If I did have a survival kit it would be a bike, a good sleeping bag, a tarp, a hatchet or axe and a shovel. if I was going to have a firearm I think I would get by with nothing but a saiga 12. It will shoot rabbits, deer or people depending on what's in it. i also don't need to worry as much about what ammo is in it. Everything else I am hoping I can sort out along the way. If our water supply has been poisoned we are pretty much fucked as well.

  2. seems to me a mountain bike with a trailer is a pretty good idea if everyone in the family has one. Next step is being as self-sufficient now as you can be. When the SHTF you don't want to be relying on anyone but yourself. To all of you who genuinely think everything is going tits up get out now..

As for weapons, a good shotgun is going to go a good way towards defending my family and putting food on the table.

Of course I would like a decent 7.62 nato as well but I gotta carry all of this so the less complications the better. To the people who say 10000 rnds of this and that and 17 different weapons, good luck to ya. No water will kill ya quicker than no guns.

Instead of doing an omega man and holing up where every zombie in town knows where ya live you gotta be better off in the boondocks where no-one but good friends and neighbours know you are at (IMHO).

p.s. The saiga or the aserma protecta look like good options. The saiga 12 because it will take almost any ammo you put in it and the aserma because you got a good number of rounds in a reliable mechanism. There is a reason we still use revolvers.

  3. What range are the contacts against hostiles in Iraq? The reason I'm asking is because I've seen a picture of an M4 with the underbarrel shotgun. I am also wondering what the effective range of a Saiga is vs an M4. I love the thought of room clearing but I wonder how effective the Saiga would be beyond 50 yards.

  4. Hi folks,

the legal limit for any firearm is no shorter than 30 inches, there is no barrel length limit on shotguns(there may have been years ago)as long as you are over 30 inches in total measured parellel to the bore you are safe.

here is a picture of my saigas, im currently working on the 19 inch s12, i think i will try a different stock design and make the trigger gaurd a little bit different too, it should still pass as A cat as it dosnt have a free standing pistol grip.

the longer s12 is just out of the box and santa bought it for me, it is proably going to be converted to a bullpup when i get time.post-12042-1229823904_thumb.jpg

you lucky bastard, nice looking guns. How have you found the quality of the stock on the "out of the box" saiga?

  5. I am the father of 2. I have a 5 yr old daughter and a newborn son (1/19/04). Currently, I have several pistols, rifles and shotguns. I won't bother to list them Pam since it'd be a waste of time, energy and bandwidth in your case. What I can say is that my 5 yr old daughter has toy guns. At the age of five, she knows how to align the sights. She knows what a proper shooting stance is and she is fully aware of what guns can do. She also knows what guns do in the hands of the wrong people. No, I haven't placed a real firearm in her hands yet but come the age of 12 when she is legally able to go to firing ranges and shoot, trust me, we'll be making a trip out there... and it won't be the last. Rest assured that my son will be well instructed in the way of firearms as well.

That having been said, most "accidental shootings" that occur with children are due to ignorance and their parent(s) making guns almost a mystical item. If all they see of firearms are what they see on TV or movies, they'll be curious and want to inspect/play with the firearms when they come near a real one. If the ignorance is washed away with education and familiarity, the "accidents" will drop considerably. As for guns in schools, I agree with you there Pam. Children have no business bringing a firearm to school. Children who are able to bring firearms to school are not to blame for their actions. If the parent(s) were doing their job(s) as parents, school shootings by crazed kids wouldn't happen. I am doing everything in my part, as is my wife, to raise our children in a loving, understanding and educated environment.

I've been shooting firearms since I was 12. My family came to the USA when I was 5 and at that age, I was already familiar with firearms. Back in the old country (Laos), my father was a captain in the Lao-Hmong Coalition Army that fought alongside the US troops in that abhoration that was called the Vietnam War. He is quite highly decorated and had he been a member of the US Armed forces, he'd have recieved a Purple Heart. He saved the lives of three US Army Rangers after having been shot himself while trying to get to them. He now resides in the States and has quite an extensive collection of wartime memorabilia including over a dozen military type rifles and just as many pistols. These firearms are all kept in prime condition and fully functional. Does this make my father a mass murderer? What about all the servicemen (and women) who retire from serving their (yours and mine) country and decide to purchase an AR-15 or AK-47 type weapon? Are they mass murderers?

I am also an avid martial artist. I hold black belts in Shorin Ryu Karate, Kendo and Kenjitsu. I also hold red and gold sashes (respectively) in Southern Shaolin Mantis and Hung Gar Kung Fu. At the age of 5, my daughter knows more about self defense than most adults. She's also quite capable with nunchaku and she is beginning to learn sword forms. Let me tell you that in the hands of even an idiot, a sword is quite capable of killing. In fact, the sword is probably one of the only weapons in the world's history that was designed to kill a human being. All other weapons, including firearms, were originally designed as a hunting or farming instrument. A sword is perhaps more dangerous than firearms in some ways. Imagine... that a crazed swordsman has just hacked apart a few people and is now bearing down on you. Remember that the blood of those other people is still glistening on the sword. If you live through the attack, whatever disease(s) the other victims have/had is/are now yours. I think that's more frightening than being killed. Should we ban swords? What about knives? Hey, you know... I know of over a dozen techniques where a broom handle can be lethal. Shall we ban brooms now too? Just about any item we come in contact with can be used as a weapon. Just about any item we can use as a weapon can be used in a method that they can be lethal. Scary thought huh?

The world is safer now than it has been in centuries. As was noted before, a century ago, you may have starved to death or been eaten by a predator if you didn't know how to use a firearm. What of your children? Now though, the weak and ignorant survive because of modern technological luxuries. There are still places in the world that you can be eaten or starve to death. My country of birth is one of those places. In such places, only strength, ingenuity and an education along with cognisance of your environment will save you and your family.

Our predecessors have gone to a great deal of trouble and anguish to learn and pass along the skills and knowledge we have today. We shouldn't just forget them lest we fall prey to dangers that we (as a modern society) percieve to be non-existant.

Regardless of how much safer the world is today, it will never be completely safe. My children and even my grandchildren will not grow up in a completely safe environment. That has already been established before my long-winded post. As said before though, I will strive to be an ever vigilant father. My children will grow up with the security of knowing that I will do all that I can to protect them from the dangers of modern (and at the same time primintive) society. Despite that, they will also grow up knowing how to defend themselves, be it with their hands and feet, sticks, knives, swords or guns. The only way to be truly safe is to be able to defend yourself in all situations. Sadly, that means we'll never be truly safe but my children will be as close to that as possible.

Perhaps, instead of condemning firearms out of ignorance, you should strive to educate yourself about them. Learn how many more lives are saved by firearms than those that are taken. Learn how firearms, in the hands of trained individuals, can prevent crimes from occuring. Learn that a firearm is nothing more than a tool. All weapons are only tools. A knife was originally meant for cutting various items, grain, the rabbit you'd just trapped... etc. It can also be used for killing. The same goes for bows and arrows. A staff was meant as a walking instrument, or in some cases, a method of carrying loads, balanced across one's shoulders. It can also be used to kill someone. Remember that. A firearm can be used for hunting, sporting purposes, home/self defense or it can be made into what you call a weapon of mass murder. This isn't done by changing how the firearm looks or works. It's done in the head of the person holding the firearm. It's done by the mind that decides to kill, the body that supports the firearm, the hands and arms that align the sights and the finger that pulls the trigger.

I apologize for the over-abundance of words. I do not apologize however for attempting to convey my message, the same message that is being conveyed by everyone who is a member of this forum and every gun owner who truly understands firearms.

    Sam (father of 2)

wow...unbelievably well said. The important thing is 'responsible use'. Admittedly, fire arms do make it easier to kill people. It is easier to run away from someone with a box cutter than a 9mm bullet. Maybe if someone at the school had been trained properly and were armed then they 'might' have been able to prevent a massacre.

  6. I have seen alot of really fantastic looking mods andread a lot about converted internals, moving the trigger etc etc etc...

Why? I am not trying to be rude. I don't own a saiga yet :cryss: but hope to one day. I am just wondering of there is something fundamentally wrong with the gun if everyone seems to need to change everything about it.

Is there anyone out there who has an un-modded saiga and loves it anyway?

  7. Hi fellow kiwis, I am a Dunedin boy trapped in England at the moment but hoping to get back soon and get a saiga for some serious pig and bunny blasting. When you guys find out what the rules are concerning saiga's and hunting or mod-ing them let me know.

  8. It seems to me that it doesn't matter too much what you have so long as you can put the rounds where you need them. The best ammo and gun in the world won't matter a damm if you can't hit the bad guy anyway. I hear a lot of people saying you need this size round or that size round but even a .22 in the face is going to ruin someone's day (not as much as 00 buck of course).

  9. Alarm system, S&W .38 Airweight, Flashlight, Telephone. All the heavy stuff is locked up. An AK or .308 overpenetrates WAY too much to use in a house.

I don't understand you guys leaving guns all over the house. Burglers usually try to break in when your Not there. Cash, guns, and drugs is what they're looking for. When the steal your gun you not only lost it but you armed a criminal.

    well said.

  10. so imp mod opens your bore as wide as it will go and the other end will narrow it as much as possible....cool. Is that the end you want for your buckshot? I want to get as many balls into what I'm shooting at as possible.

  11. I was wondering how many of you use your Saigas for hunting (NZ gun laws won't let you shoot dear or pigs with a shotgun)

Hi, I'm from NZ too. Are you sure that we can't shoot pigs or deers with a shotgun? Where in the Arms Code did it say that?

guys in the hunting shops said so.. apparently it is considered to be inhumane. Whereabouts in NZ are ya from? I'm a Dunedin boy stuck in england at the moment.

  12. thank you gentlemen for your honest and reasonable answers. I respect any persons right to defend what they love with whatever they have handy. If anyone tried to mess with my loved ones then I have no sympathy for them at all. I was wondering how many of you use your Saigas for hunting (NZ gun laws won't let you shoot dear or pigs with a shotgun), or whether you guys use them for competition. You guys seem to have some pretty fun competitions with real-life applications.

How do your semi's stack up against traditional over-unders or pumps for things like clay pigeon shooting?

As for reducing recoil..I saw a little rubber gizmo you stick in front of your reciever. Does it work?

I think America has a bad reputation for gun crime and accidents. When will people realise it isn't the guns that are the problems, it is letting people with no respect or proper training get hold of them.

    has anyone used polyshok rounds?

  13. I'm from NZ. Your guns look pretty as hell and I want one  but what are you using them for? Especially the shorties.

less important questions: has anyone tried using the magnum rounds with a shorty and do they still have teeth or thumbs? How fierce is the recoil and what can you do to make it more survivable?

What is the effective range of a saiga-12 with buck, slugs or saboted slugs?

For you home defence guys. If you wanted to stop someone in a bulletproof vest with your saiga what would your ammo load up be? (Obviously busting them in the head is gonna work at close range)

be nice to the new guy...

  14. There's a new line of personal Tasers out, they come in different colors. ^_^

    I'll pass.

I'm waiting for the combo shotgun slug/taser. A slug capable of leaving a taser device inside the body as it passes through delivering a high voltage shock until the batteries are dead. Now that's one shot stopping power!

Tazer do a shotgun shell that fires a tazer. Don't know if it is possible to gethold of it yet.
