  1. With today's economy I think I would like to start charging for all of the smith work I do. I like helping people out, but I would also like to make a spare dollar here and there as well. Not to mention paying for/justifying all the $$$ in my shop!

I've looked around the internet and everything I see appears to be some type of 'scam'. I'm sure there are some safe sites that offer a good kit to assist in getting one's FFL and gunsmith certs. Can someone recommend one please.

I don't want a retail store or regular hours. I don't want to inventory tons of guns. What I really want is to be able to work out of my HOME shop doing custom work. Having an FFL will allow me to purchase and ship too. I would only every have a few guns in stock/on the bench.

Any guidance from someone who's 'been there, done that' would be greatly appreciated.

Just like those worried about their 2nd amendment rights, I'm worried this paperwork will become harder to get as well.

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

  2. you should relay the serial #s and issues along to clyde over at RAAC, and see if he will swap them out.

    +1 "Yeah... What he said."

As I had stated in my "how-to" article I spoke with Clyde at great length about this issue. RAAC is VERY interested to know about, and to solve these issues. Give him a call. He's good people.

  3. Bought (5) 12ga Saigas recently from CFS - Thinking about shortening them - picked a radom shotgun and disassembled it - first thing I noticed is no gas ports in the barrel - well at least none that line up with the ports in the gas block. Tried firing today - its a single shot. Once we returned from the range I opened another box to see if the next gun was the same. 1 hole through - 1 hole opened up slighty with welding wire - 1 drill dimple. This is some really crappy work on the ruskies part. Its a good thing I didnt sell these to someone - I could just hear the bitching that would result from the customer. Guess I have to wait for the bullet trap from Savage Range Systems to arrive to see how the rest work.

Here is the link on how to fix your problems:

  4. Pretty fair deal.

I was one of those No-bama purchasers too. It's my first Saiga. It's being held up at the FFL until the dealer can get some info from Cadiz though, so I don't have it yet. <_<

I have a buddy that I took with me to a gun show recently that might still want an S-12. I showed him how many folks were upping the price of the guns and how a few were still at the $599 range. He seemed interested. I'll give him a call and see what he says.

    Corbin

*Edit* He's interested. He'll take the mag too. Should I email you?

    PM sent.

  5. It would work, but I can't image how you are going to hold the Saiga while sighting.

LMAO, I had a fucktard moment, that's what I get for beinng on the phone while typing my question. What I meant to say was "Any problems you can think of with mounting that to a side rail scope mount"

Although there is no 'eye-relief' with a reflex type scope, they are generally mounted further from the eye than traditional scopes. I would suggest mounting the sight approximately where the existing rear sight is. Check out the picture thread on this forum for some ideas.

  6. How do you guy choke to skeet. I was using the polychoke and a guy with a 500 and a turkey choke was smoking me. He used my Saiga and could do no better than I. Someone did make a converter to use remmy chokes I think.

Do you have a 19" IZ-109 or the longer IZ-107? It's going to be harder with a 19" barrel. You might try a hotter load, something with more velocity. Best bet is to get them soon as they launch.

A 10/12 round mag or a drum should help too!

  7. I recommend a reflex or halo sight like the one I have pictured here. I have used them on 1911 competetion pistols, 10/22 plinkers and shotguns alike (awesome for clays!). VERY fast target acquisiton with both eyes open. Good in bright daylight or at night. You can get them with red and/or green lasers with adjustable reticles. Cost $30-$175 range. Make sure you get one that is made to handle a firearms recoil and not just for airsoft or archery.

  8. Messed mine up during conversion, need one please. Saiga 308. Thanks...

Make your own with a pair of pliers, a screwdriver and $1.50...

Go to your local remote control hobby store (HobbyTown etc.) They will have a section that has spring steel rods in various lengths and diameters. (Not to mention brass, aluminum and various plactic pieces.)

Find the right diameter rod you need. Should cost about $1.50.

Use a screwdriver, socket wrench extension, or what ever metal shaft you can find of the proper diameter to use to wrap the spring steel around. trim to length with wire cutters.

It may take a few tries to get it just right. For $1.50 you should have enough to make 10 BHO springs.

  11. I dont know if that Cobra piece will work for me... it seems to go all the way to the end of the front... so the HK sights would get in its way...?

What is the total height on their rail vs. a regular rail + YHM riser?

Can you have a piece of rail go from the back of the gun, over the receiver all the way to the front?

It seems that Cobra piece doesnt go back over the receiver and stops in the middle of the gun?

I'd like a strip to go across the entire top.

Try contacting him. He does CUSTOM work. I'm sure he can make you whatever you like.

  12. Ok since I am going with an 8" SBS and already plan on adding a VFG, this doesnt leave much room for any type of flashlight/laser combo on the front.

Now since this is going to be an 8" home defense and not any type of hunting shotgun, lets be honest, there is no reason to have a scope... so that leaves the top free.

So I was thinking of putting a TRL-2 on top "upside down" if you will.

I would also have a pressure pad taped to the VFG for quick on/off of light.

I realize this will block the use of the HK sights while the TRL-2 is clamped on, but do you guys think with a normal piece of rail on top AND a YHM riser, would the flashlight and laser both clear the HK front sight?

I would love to add the light right to a rail on top without a riser to keep clearance as low as possible... but I may have to use one to clear the HK sight.

Do you think it will be too high with the riser?

I LOVE my TRL-2. I suggest you get in touch with Cobra Custom's on this site. He sells a top rail like you need, plus he has done some custom rails for folks with SBS. I'm sure he can put together just what you are looking for.

  13. I've shot probably 100 rounds of low brass shells. 2 or 3 FTE per mag.

I shot 10 rounds of 2 3/4 buck last night and it functioned perfectly on both 1 and 2 (granted only 1 mag per setting, but thats a first)

I've got a box of 3" fiocchi 4shot, 7/8oz 1500 vel, I'm going to try tomorrow after work.

Just seems like its going to really expensive to get this thing running correctly.

I've started polishing the bolt and hammer. Haven't taken much off the bolt, but it has smoothed out the action some.

But this mod seems like an easy way to make sure the gas system isn't helping to cause the problem.

    What do you think?

Remove the gas regulator and take a CLOSE look at your gas ports with a good flashlight. Use a paperclip to clean out the ports you can see. If you can only see one port clearly, then this mod will make a big difference in the way your gun functions.

  14. I need to add gas ports ,How hard is the barrel to drill and did you mess the finish up any. Thanks

This mod can be done without harming the finish of the gun. Be careful. Protect the gun where necessary with masking tape, etc. if you feel the need.

Why do you NEED to add gas ports?

Even if you only have a two port gun it should cycle ALL ammo types according to RAAC.

Are the ports unobstructed and clean? If your gun has not yet been converted, check with RAAC about getting it repaired/replaced by them. If you want to repair your own gun, I would consider enlarging your existing gas ports SLIGHTLY before attempting to drill another hole in the barrel. Drilling a hole into the barrel may be difficult to perform for the average Joe sucessfully with hand tools. (Have you ever tried drilling a hole into a cylinder... On a precise angle... In an exact location... Into tuff steel?)
