  1. Pre-ban AK mags of any capacity are OK in NY and you may use them in any gun whether the weapon is pre or post ban.

Your sources are correct, the WASRs were imported with receivers that accepted single stack magazines, Century then cut them to accept standard AK mags and added US parts for 922r compliance.

No worries, you are good to go with the pre-ban AK mags.

  3. I had a great time. Thanks to all who showed, Nailbomb, Autumn, AkaStormi, Rob, and Matt. Plus Fred, one of the club regulars turned up and shared his M1 with us. I'll post some pics once I find my cell's flashcard. Plus Rob took a whole bunch and is burning a CD for me.

Perfect weather, good company, and lots of fun hardware - can't think of many better ways to spend an afternoon.

I got a kick out of the three Bosnian guys, the looks on their faces was priceless when they first showed up and saw all our Saiga's and com-block surplus stuff. I overheard an older fellow with his muzzleloader asking one of you guys, "What the hell is that?". Funny.

Thanks to everyone for sharing your guns, ammo, food, and time. Thanks to Matt and Stormi for helping me clean up.

Let's be sure to do it again next year.

  4. No complaint, actually a compliment. I have had two springs break in 10 round AGP magazines. Both times they quickly sent replacements. Like the first post says - contact them.

  5. ok quick question... how come I can go buy an AK whit a pistol grip whit a stock an is clip feed,, an i cant on the s-12 ?

    seems wrong.. no ???

The NYS definition of an "Assault Weapon" is different for rifles vrs shotguns vrs pistols.

There is no logic to any of it.

I will tell you this, if you are going to play with these things in NYS invest some serious time learning the laws.

  6. Welcome NYLI81!

I'm in Central New York. Had the same question as you last year when I got my S12. If you search the forms here you will learn that thumbhole/skeleton stocks on the S12 are OK in New York State. Pistol grips are not.

To paraphrase NYS AWB re shotguns:

"Assault Weapon" defined as a Semi-auto shotgun with two of the following:

    Folding or Telescoping Stock

    Pistol Grip

Fixed Magazine > 5 round capacity

    Detachable Magazine

Since the Saiga-12 already has a detachable magazine, adding the folding/telescoping stock or a pistol grip puts you in violation.

    Silly crap, I know.

I called the NYS Police on this issue and was told thumbhole/skeleton stocks are not considered pistol grips. Furthermore, the text of NY's proposed expanded AWB adds thumbhole stocks to the forbidden list. Why would they be specifically added to the proposed (not in effect) law if they were illegal under the existing law?

If it helps you with you decision, here I am in NY with my S-12 equipped with a skeleton stock. Mine is not converted. You used to be able to get a Bulgarian skeleton stock that worked on converted (trigger group moved back to original location) S-12's, but I don't think they are available any longer.

    Have Fun!

  7. I had no luck with mounting a harris bipod on the original wood lower forearm. This negatively affected my groups. I'm going to do a Verapod mount on the receiver. A Harris mount on the receiver is a lot of hardware in a little space.

Rather than jumping through hoops to adapt the rifle to heavy ball, get Priv Partizan light ball SP for hunting.

  8. BVamp:

The site address is 5683 Stage Road (right Stormi?), Trenton, NY 13304.

There are no fees, however I was considering passing the hat for a small voluntary donation to the Club to keep relations positve in case we want to come back next year.

Ranges are open during daylight hours. There is no town noise law, but in the interest of being good neighbors, I'd prefer no early AM (before 0900) shooting.

So what I'm thinking, is gathering late Saturday morning 10-noon, you are on your own for lunch, an afternoon of shooting, followed by pot-luck BBQ, more shooting 'til dusk.

If anyone wants to camp Saturady night, let me know.

Hopefully we can get Indy to show up for a few hours since he's not hosting the shoot?

  9. Yes Nailbomb - the 28th is locked in! Well, at least if we are going to shoot at Greenfield.

The previous weekend there is a pistol course at the club and the weekend of Sept 4th is Labor Day weekend. After that there are hunter safety classes and the ranges get busy with hunter's sighting in.

So I'm thinking of target options. My first idea is "The Field of Zombies". This will be like a dozen Zombie heads on the 50 yard range for buckshot shooting. I think I'll get a couple cardboard deer silhouettes and put Saiga antelope heads on them on the rifle range. Also plan to hang paint cans with Zombie heads at 100 yards. There's a propane tank hanging at 200 yards. Plus we can once again test our wingshooting skills at the trap range!

We can shoot anything but glass as long as we clean up whatever we bring in.

  10. Good news! The Greenfield Club is available either Saturday August 28th or Saturday September 4th. The clubhouse (with kitchen, pavilion, picnic tables, restrooms) and ranges (200yd rifle, 50 yd pistol/shotgun, and trap field) will be open for our use. I didn't request closing the ranges to others figuring we can share and really until hunter sight-in time (later Sept into Oct) its never very busy.

We are limited to no more than 20 people but I don't think we will have an issue with that. We will have to bring our own food and BBQ grill(s) although there is a stove/range in the kitchen if we prepare food in advance and just need to warm up on site. Also we have a couple refrigerators in the kitchen. Other than that, we will have to bring our own clays to use at the trap field.

If anyone wants to camp overnight Saturday on Club grounds, that is OK too.

Edit: Sept 4th is Labor Day weekend. I assume folks will have other plans. So I'm aiming for August 28th. Already have two co-workers and Saiga-less Dave planning to attend.

    Edit Edit: I'm making ribs!
