  1. Some of us NY'ers have thumbhole/skeleton stocks on both converted and unconverted S-12s. I researched it thoroughly before adding one (it being one of my goals in life to avoid jail), even contacting the NYS Police. You are good to go.

  2. neat, think I should tell my pop that him and my stepmom are still holding permits in NY even though they dont live there for years now? LOL nice way to do your homework NYS

Yes, the database is all permits ever issued including deceased and people that have otherwise left the state.

My name is in there but with a former address. So government incompetence has worked out for me for once. Feel sorry for the current resident should someone use this information to go shopping for a new pistol.

However, the names and addresses of 4 of my co-workers are there and correct.

Edit: Outside NYC and surrounding Counties, pistol permits are issued for life, so your folks permits may very well still be valid.

  3. Last Saturday, it replaced the big 'ol Mossberg 835 on a turkey hunt. S-12 is virgin no more.

Congrats on the bird! where were you hunting at?

Just outside of the Village of Clinton, Oneida County, NY. I'm not ashamed to say that's my first turkey! Took up turkey hunting last Fall. He was one of five toms that came running in at my decoy all at the same time, it was really exciting.

  4. We are talking off-hand shots here, right?

My most memorable one was at a snow shoe walk/shoot with black powder rifles. I was scoring dead last in a group of about 6 or 7 men. Last shooting station was your choice of clays at 50 yards for 2 points, or a charcoal briquette hanging on a string for 10 points. The leaders all went for the clays figuring nobody would hit the charcoal. Figuring I had nothing to lose, I chose the charcoal. As much to mine as everyone's surprise I powdered the thing using a .50 cal Pennsylvania long rifle with patched round ball. The perfectly circular shock wave of charcoal looked awesome against the snow backdrop. The ten points put me in first place to win the shoot. The lead shooter up to that point was not a good sport about it either, arguing that the charcoal shouldn't have been worth 10.

Lucky shot? Sure, but it was what I was aiming at!

  5. I've carried a P3AT for 3 years. The emphasis here is CARRIED. It is ALWAYS with me. As some have noted, its only useful if its on you. Loaded, it weighs 11 oz. In my pocket, with holster, for all purposes, it looks like a wallet.

In the Winter (5 mos. a year here), I carry a 40 S&W Semi Auto with the P3AT as backup. The rest of the year, its just the P3AT.

Mine can't handle +P ammo all the time. Through practice, I've learned that 2 +P rounds on top of the magazine are fine. So hit-em-hard with the first 2 round tap is an option.

  6. The WASR-10 was my first and only AK rifle until recently, so I can't compare it with the others. I've had no issues and nothing but fun with it. I researched before buying, knew what I was getting into, and kept my expectations realistic. I guess I bought it about 5 or 6 years ago and have been happy enough that I've felt no need to buy another AK. Well... except until the recent low-priced PSLs came along!

  7. I also make my own. If using beef, the eye round is a good cut. I also make jerkey from deer and turkey. Meats are about 1/2 water, so a 3 pound roast gives you 1.5 pounds of jerkey at a whole lot cheaper than store bought.

My recipe for marinade is simple. Teriyaki and worchestershire plus black pepper, red pepper, and dried minced onion. I cut the meat with (not across) the grain (muscel fiber)in slices about 1/2 inch thick and let it soak 3 days in the fridge so the marinade fully penetrates.

I used to use a dehydrator but now I use my wife's convection oven. It used to take 10 hours in the dehydrator, but only takes 5 in the oven plus temperature control is better in the oven. I dehydrate at 165F (Pasteurization temp) to assure no bacteria growth. You don't want to use higher temps, jerkey shouldn't be cooked.

I have a cut up deer roast soaking at home as we speak, er... ah.. type.

  8. Also, the text of the NYS Assembly proposed expanded AWB (pending, not current legislation) specifically adds the thumbhole stock. Its OK now, but maybe not later.

Will they ban turkey guns with PGs? Ridiculous!

Damn I'm glad I don't live in such a State.

Yes NY gun laws are really just plain stupid. But my friends, family, and life are here so here I'll stay. Some of us fight the good fight against these laws, but we are outnumbered by 9,000,000 New York City-its. The proposed expanded NYS AWB will require you to register your "AWs" just like a pistol. It cuts the number of allowed evil features to one and adds compensators and thumbhole stocks to the list. Like I told my state representatives (face to face), "At the stroke of a pen, you will turn me from a law-biding citizen to a violent felon - your choice".

BTW: Pistol grips on pump shottys are OK (for now). The NYS AWB applies to to semi-autos with detachable magazines and all other shotgun action types, if the tube holds more than 5 rounds. Don't ask me why, there is no logic to this crap.

  9. Welcome NY Rifleman. Yes, the thumbhole stock is OK in NY State. I have one on my S-12. I even checked it out with the NYS Police. Also, the text of the NYS Assembly proposed expanded AWB (pending, not current legislation) specifically adds the thumbhole stock. Its OK now, but maybe not later.

  10. Yes it is but most people replace the pos1 on there with a posp since its illuminated and the higher magnification options. Also if you want the orignal scope it can be had for right at $100. So if your looking to save cash or are on a budget or going to replace the optic anyway the 450 priced gun is the way to go.

Blazed30: After considering your sage advice, I just ordered the PSL w/o scope for $450. Thanks!

Gun 1st, scope later. Also, I confirmed that the $450 PSL is all Romanian, not a kit gun.

Congrats! Mine was supposed to come in today but UPS came after he had left for work >< So hopefully he is at home for the delivery tomorrow I cant wait went and picked up some ammo today, and if the rain allows it I would like to take it out and put a few rounds down range. I will be sure to let you know how it all looks when I get it home!

Please let me know how she looks. I'm hoping mine gets here next week before some surgery I'm having. I have to rest for 2 weeks thereafter and figure I can tear this thing apart and do some cleaning, polishing, accurizing while convalecing. Already shopping for a scope.

Good points. I'm going to get the pos scope initially just for authenticity -we will see where its goes from there.

  13. After reading all I could on them, I'm going to get a PSL. Just like their cousin the WASR-10, they may have issues, but nothing that can't be fixed by the average tinkerer. The best price I've found so far is about $650 so someone PM me on the $450 seller.

My wife is getting me the PSL for my Birthday - God Bless Her! I don't expect a sniper rifle so I won't be disappointed. Really, I only expect an AK that shoots 7.62x54R and that alone is a major cool factor.

Maybe I'll get her to buy the Saiga 308 next year.

  14. Blackwolf:

I'm another NY'er who used a thumhole stock (RAAC) on my S12. I'm comfortable with that decision after researching the issue and even discussing it with the NYS Police. Another point that may help is that the proposed expanded NY AWB text adds thumbhole stocks to the list of evil features. So if they are illegal now, why would they be added under the proposed legislation?

Thanks to Nailbomb too for helping me through this decision back when I was researching it.
